RedHawks lay the smack down 19-3
Watched the RedHawks play in the 40 degree temperature in OKC tonight. It looked like it was going to be a pitchers dual heading into the bottom of the 4th with Round Rock up 1-0.
Elizardo "The Lizard" Ramirez was on the mound for the 'RHawks. He didn't look dominating, but crafty, biting at the edges most of the night. Round Rock had Fernando Nieve going - and let me tell you - this guy can bring the cheese... hit 97 multiple times early dominating the RedHawks first time through the order. He just didn't have enough gas as the 'RHawks put up 3 in the 4th and 3 more in the 5th before chasing him.
It would probably be easier to list the guys who didn't have a good night at the plate, but these stuck out to me...
Ellison had a grand slam, a double and 2 singes... I know, I know... it's Ellison and nobody cares, but he really looked good.
Cruz hit a 3-run shot and had 4 RBIs...
Arias went 4 for 5 with 4 RBIs...
Salty looked good going 1 for 3 with 2 RBIs and 2 BBs...
Boggs seemed frustrated with the umpire at times (as did many of the players) and ended up 1 for 3 with 2 Ks.
The RedHawks had 7 players in their starting line-up who, after the game, are hitting over .300 - they really look good this year.

Nice
thanks for the heads up. I admit I was hoping for Salty 3/4 with 2 HRs though. Not that he had a bad line.

Sick. This kid is going to see late inning action for the Rangers in ‘08.

Beast...
Does this kid have the potential to start for us down the line?

No
If he were a fielder converting to a knuckleballer, ala Wakefield who went from 1b to P back in 1989, then I would say yes because it takes less stress to convert to throwing the knuckler. But in the case of Madrigal it would require a few more seasons in the minors. Why stretch him out over the next few years when he’s successful as a reliever/closer now?

"I know, I know... it's Ellison and nobody cares"
...i’m pretty sure Ellison cares. his family and friends probably care…
...Internet elitests? stat-jockeys? Baseball America analysts? fat-asses who blog while watching a baseball game, and then minimize that window to resume porn research, while drinking a Coke, and eating leftovers, pasting together cheap Photoshop creations so they can appear witty and creative to the rest of the community?
yeah… they don’t care.

That's a pretty rare game
Where you can be ticked off at the ump and score 19 runs the same night.
The ‘Hawks are off to an amazing start – they really took off since AAAA Cruz made it through waivers and joined the lineup.
Kevin Mench batting .208 though… when are we gonna release his ass?

And BTW
How does Arias look in the field?
by lonestarJon on Apr 18, 2008 2:45 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Arias was at 2B
He looked fine… didn’t seem to have any trouble with handling grounders or going back on a couple pop-ups – didn’t really get to see his arm though. He’s mainly been DHing the games I’ve seen.

small sample size
He was hitting almost .400 until a 3-4 game drought which dropped his average doen to the mid .100’s. He is getting extra base hits and driving in runs which is good to see.

My cousin was the home plate ump last night
I was at the game till the bottom of the third then headed home to the DFW area.
I saw the last batter in the bottom of the 3rd arguing, I don’t remember who it was.
It was fun to go to the game. I went down to the umps locker room, we went out on the field and watched some Round Rock player bust his butt doing a tap dance in his spikes on the concrete in the tunnel.

Think that was Ryan Roberts...
I was sure he was going to get tossed… your cousin showed a lot of restraint cause the players and fans were giving it to him most of the game…

I called my cousin
I called my cousin and told him that you guys were talking about him and he laughed. He pointed out that once the Redhawks started swinging the bats they started scoring runs and quit complaining about the umpiring.

Schlact Update
Courtesy of MJH:
At 22, Schlact is still among the youngest starters in the Texas League. He’s holding the circuit to a .148 batting average and his WHIP is 0.84.
Right-handers are hitting .111 / .256 / .139 against him.
He’s been phenomenal so far. And I don’t think anybody would say that he’s one of the Rangers top-10 starting pitching prospects.
Pretty exciting.
Very impressive.
...it's the weekend, so why the hell not?

Guys who need to be added to the 40-man this winter:
Eric Hurley
Michael Schlact
Zach Phillips
John Mayberry
Taylor Teagarden
Doug Mathis
Kea Kometani
Jose Vallejo
Omar Poveda
Considering the list above, I still don’t see how anybody
can believe Davis or Andrus sees the majors before ‘09.

Guys that could be off by this winter...
Kazuo Fukumori
Frankyln German
Eddie Guardado
Jason Jennings
Kameron Loe
Dustin Nippert
John Rheinecker
Jamey Wright
Gerald Laird (If Traded)
Adam Melhuse
Joaquin Arias
Ben Broussard
Ramon Vasquez
Travis Metcalf
Milton Bradley
Marlon Byrd
Jason Botts
I know the 9 guys you listed above seem like a lot to be added, but to me it seems like there is going to be plenty of room on the 40. Plus there is always the chance a guy like Padilla or Blalock is dealt (although they would probably bring back at least 1 guy who would be on the 40). That said I think Davis is on the 40 by September, Andrus I don’t belive will be util Sept. 09 at the earliest.

1/3 of your list or so were '08 FA signings
Will there be no ‘09 FA signings next winter? Will the ‘08 trades we make not include replacements to the 40-man? Will we flush guys like Loe and Laird and Metcalf and Botts and Wright and Arias with no return added to the 40-man? I see incoming where you don’t. Am I wrong?
by shroomer on Apr 18, 2008 4:41 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
No you're not wrong...
I see incoming players from free agency and trades as well, but not as much as this year. I think the way JD has constructed this team he is going to expect more of the young guys on the 40 to have a more significant role with each season.
For example I don’t see guys like Eddie G, Fuku, Jennings, Nippert, etc being brought in next year. JD will try and fill those slots from within with guys like Hurley, Madrigal, Murray, Feldman, Littleton, Fx2 etc.
You sign guys like we did this year to try and help fill the gaps until the young guys are ready and then try and flip them like we did with Gagne and Lofton last year. As the rebuilding continues I believe JD will look to fill more holes with our young kids that are already going to be on the 40. There will still be a couple FA signings, but I think they lessen each year as the team relies more heavily on the kids in the system. I also think some guys could be “flushed” or DFA’d like Metcalf, Arias, Fuku, BB, JJ, etc. You could be right. The 40 may be very crowded by that time, but I think there will be enough room for the kids. Just my opinion.

Elvis
He has hits in all but 2 or 3 games, but his line is regressing. Even in AA, you have to project him heavily.
I rely almost totally on hype to get excited about this player.

3 probably won't
Poveda, Vallejo, and Phillips
Phillips and Vallejo are too far down in the minors for a team to commit a spot on the 25 man roster to them. Poveda could if he has a good year but he would still have barely pitched in AA by the end of the year. If he has a solid season like last then I would add him just for the sake of not losing him but the other two I wouldn’t worry about
