Friday a.m. stuff
Outstanding game yesterday.
Evan Grant says the Rangers learned from their last matchup against the Blue Jays. Vicente Padilla knew he had to go deep into the game, and had a terrific outing, and David Murphy made adjustments from the last time he faced Roy Halladay, opting to go the other way more rather than trying to pull him.
Hank Blalock and Michael Young both sat yesterday due to injury issues, with Young having a sore calf and Blalock a bad back. Young should be fine for the weekend, but Blalock will sit out tonight's game, as well, and may not play at all this weekend. And in other injury news, Grant reports that Brandon McCarthy got checked out yesterday and was cleared to expand his throwing program.
Jeff Wilson talks about Jarrod Saltalamacchia in a piece in the S-T, saying the Rangers are pleased with how he's handled going to AAA.
T.R. Sullivan has some bloggy notes up, including this remarkable tidbit...Kevin Millwood is 0-9 in his last 11 road starts, with a 4.02 ERA. The Rangers have averaged 1.8 runs per game in those 11 starts.

Damn Adam
Getting an early start today, I barely got my coffee.
Good to read that Salty is keeping his cool. I remember reading a few comments that he looked good blocking some erratic Fukamori pitches the other night, so hopefully he keeps it up.
And with the 22nd overall selection the Dallas Cowboys select Jonathan Stewart.
It'd be nice
if we had a catcher that could block erratic throws.

Even better
if we had a catcher that didn’t short hop every throw to 2nd.

Salty
I’ll say it again—we’re going to start hearing a crescendo of remarks about how his defense is coming along over the next month or two in preparation of moving him or Laird. This actually builds Laird’s value (assuming he hits close to the average catcher) since it makes him seem even less necessary on a rebuilding club. Still, I kind of expect Salty to be dealt for a bigger piece of the future while Laird keeps a spot warm for Teagarden.

So far
this team is playing very good road baseball.

season so far
i’d have to say the thing thats impressing me the most so far is padilla. he just seems different up on the mound this year, not quite as psychotic

trade fodder?
I’m contradicting myself by talking about this so early in the season, but if he keeps this up the Rangers might be able to get something nice in return for him this summer. There are several contenders that could use a solid mid-rotation guy. I’d be ok with keeping him though.

yeah
but you’re not looking to trade him – if a team bowls you over or if there’s a bidding war, you listen. otherwise, you play this marlon byrd cool
scap load or die
and hope it doesn't work out like "Marlon Byrd cool" did
I want success!

Padilla
If he can keep it up and keep pitching well i’d just assume the rangers keep him. I suppose it would all depend on how much another team is willing to pay

Trade
I think you have to listen to any deal and if JD thinks he’s getting a B-B+ prospect in return I would feel its worth it. Padilla is going to be 32 by the end of the season and hes making $11M this year and $12M next year with a club option of $12M for 2010. Thats a very tradeable contract for a SP these days. I know people always want to win now but we do have to be realistic.
White Women!
Keep in mind that next year is Padilla's contract year
He seems to be someone stable this year that will give innings, which the Rangers need with the bullpen apparently not as good as last year. Then next year, Padilla will be pitching for a new contract, and everyone knows how he steps it up in contract years. Besides, who will he be blocking this year or next year? I’m sure Jennings won’t be back next year, which would mean another rotation spot opened up for a younger kid next year.

I believe that myth has been debunked.

Not a contract year
Hes got an option for 2010 at $12 million given the pitching market unless he goes in the tank in the next two years I would be willing to guess most teams would pick that up.
White Women!
Padilla speaks:
“I knew I had over 100 pitches,” Padilla said through a translator. “I knew I wasn’t going to be coming back for the eighth, so I had to give everything I had on those last few pitches in the seventh.”
That’s nice to see/hear.
What happened to my old signature?
Winning 30-3 isn't enough any more
A Japanese high school team scored 66 runs in less than 2 innings.
I think I did this on Nintendo when I was a kid.

Mercy is for the weak
Right around the time all the young talent is ready to contend is when the organization will realize that Ron Washington is the wrong man for the job.
Pitch count?
Was I reading that right when they said that the one pitcher threw 250 pitches before the game was called?
Poor kid.
Apparently Dusty Baker
is now managing a Japanese High School team as well.

Gabbard?
Does anyone know why in the article discussing Bradley, they don’t list Gabbard pitching the last game against Boston? Could be nothing, but I was just curious.
Longoria
Rookie third baseman Evan Longoria and the Tampa Bay Rays agreed Friday to a $17.5 million, six-year contract, a deal that could be worth up to $44 million over nine seasons.
Tampa Bay has a club option for 2014 and a second option that covers 2015 and 2016.
That could be a very good signing for them if he continues to pan out like everyone thinks he will.
Millwood...
His lack of run support is starting to remind me of the year he was in Cleveland and won the ERA title. The Rangers need to start scoring this guy some runs.

Not sure Milly would approve
he is married , after all.
