22 innings
In case you missed it, check out the box score from last night's remarkable Colorado/San Diego game, which ended about 6 hours ago.
22 innings, 6+ hours, and a 2-1 Colorado victory. It was scoreless through 13 innings, and each team scored a run in the 14th.
Pads hitters were 11 for 74 on the night, while Rockies hitters did a little better, going 14 for 73 (although with 20 Ks).

That'll lower a team batting average
Also, you gotta love Petco Park. Talk about a pitchers paradise. It single handedly brings down average game times for the league. The 22 innings only took 6 hours. If the Rangers and Red Sox (two slowest teams I’ve ever seen) played a 22 inning game, and Padilla was on the mound for Texas, we’d be looking at something like 8, maybe 9 hours. That is agony.
I could sit probably through a 6 hour 22 inning game. Shame I wasn’t there last night.

OT: the save rule
Can someone explain this one to me?
Last night in this game Papelbon came in with his team up four runs. Not a save situation. But he then allowed two runs. Doesn’t it then become a save situation? Or does the save rule have a clause that precludes a guy from getting a save if his own sucky performance is the thing that makes the game a save situation?

Nope
You can’t create a save situation for yourself. If someone came in after Papelbon it would be a save opportunity for them. Someone correct me if I’m wrong but I’m pretty sure that’s right.
And with the 22nd overall selection the Dallas Cowboys select Jonathan Stewart.

Hmm
I don’t think it has anything to do with him sucking. I think it had to do with the amount of outs. The Giambino struck out swinging for one out. Cano grounded out and a run scored to make it 7-4 with 2 Outs. Then Melky went yard to make it 7-5 with 2 outs. Its my understanding that with 2 outs for it to become a save situation he would have had to have had a runner on base and the tying run on the plate.
But I could be totally wrong MLB doesn’t really clarify all the extenuating circumstances of a save.

TheBZA is right
you can’t create your own save situation. It makes no difference that it ultimately became a save situation, Papelbon came into the game in a non-save situation. You can still get a save if the run difference is more than 3 if the tying run is on base, at bat, or on deck. Check out the link below, it breaks down the situations a pitcher can obtain a save.

Both teams
Both teams also used more than 20 players
And with the 22nd overall selection the Dallas Cowboys select Jonathan Stewart.

I remember when ...
you could just go to any team’s website, click on “top-plays” or something like that and get the list of daily highlights for any MLB team. Sigh – like LSB nimbleness, those days are gone. I’d like to see the high-lights of this SD game but I just don’t feel like going thru an Easter Egg hunt at MLB.com to find them. Has anybody surfed the video page at Dallasstars.com? Talk about a sensational fan-friendly tool. Good thing MLB doesn’t have anything like that.

so in the bottom of the 14th
bases loaded, down by one run, you get a single up the middle and you DON’T sent the runner from second home? Really? I guess maybe because there was only 1 out they decided to play it safe but its the 14th and this is the first time you’ve scored. Well, that bit of wisdom led to 8 more innings and a loss.
Now, I ask you, how would Rangers fans have reacted to that?

with the padres lineup
the odds of getting a hit in the next two at bats are so low that you send the guy. Heck, there is probably a better runs expected value for trying to score from first base on a single than waiting for that lineup to get another hit.

I stayed up to watch the game
What sucks is that the DirecTV baseball package sets every game to run for 6 hours. After 6 hours, the program ends.
At 1am PT last night, 6 hours after the game started, my screen went black in the 21st inning. I was pissed.

22 Innings
This game was actually still being played when I arrived at work this morning. I do work in London, but that is still bizzare.
