Wash Job At Risk Per Rosenthal

His interview as part of Braves/LAD pregame, he said there is already a manager at risk. And that manager is Wash. Said Wash got extended last year but that was before Nolan came on board.

Said that Hicks met with Wash before this road trip and said if team doesn't play better, 'changes would be made'. Rosenthal finished with Wash may not make it to May.

Haven't looked at website to see if he discussed there, but this is what I just saw.

Wash

while i’m starting to have doubts if he is the right guy or not, i think it’s way too premature to talk about firing him.

I agree

but there is probably no better way for a manager to get fired than his team making mental mistakes the way the Rangers have been this year. Especially for a “new boss,” so to speak…

im not upset about it

but the probelm is who replaces him?

Matt Walbeck

Personally, I wouldn’t be shocked if Walbeck were managing this team by Memorial Day.

by Adam J. Morris on Apr 19, 2008 3:28 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's the name

that came to my mind as well. Walbeck gets good buzz; I guess I’d just have to know a little more about him to be sure how I felt.

by Brett Perryman on Apr 19, 2008 4:16 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

walbeck

was also the name i thought of first. after hearing of how highly thought of he was around the league and an “up and coming” coach/manager.

I don't think that Washington was viewed

as an up and coming managerial prospect. He was viewed as a terrific guy to have on a staff and a great communicator, but even Oakland didn’t consider him for their own opening.

And the other guy ain’t too bad either. But the Braves dude is my favorite Manager Meltdown of all time. I remember seeing that on ESPN when it first happened, and laughing for 20 minutes.

Buddy Bell?

Walbeck?
Jim Sundberg?

I don’t have a clue, but in the short term, I don’t give a crap about his on field strategy or who he plays or anything like that. I want someone who isn’t going to tolerate pathetic efforts. Right now, I don’t really care if they win games, I just want to see them making progress. It seems like they are taking steps backwards. I want them to hire someone who is going to turnover the buffet after the game if they play like jackasses.

by badradiorules on Apr 20, 2008 4:39 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Buddy Bell

sucked as the Royals manager…

Why does everyone want Walbeck? I don’t see what is so great about him, he is our third base coach. Why do people think he can be a good manager?

by miles on Apr 20, 2008 4:45 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Because he was last years minor league manager of the year

And he has a repuation of being able to lead and develop a team of young players. Which will play very well here.

Just because he’s the third base coach right now doesn’t mean he’s some kind of moron. Don’t let Ron Washington give all third base coaches a bad name.

by lonestarJon on Apr 20, 2008 5:19 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Almost forgot

A plus one on Buddy Bell, though. He’s a moron.

by lonestarJon on Apr 20, 2008 5:21 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

For the most part

those names were tongue-in-cheek. None of us are on the inside enough to know who would make a good manager. My point was in the paragraph. That’s the kind of guy I want.

In Buddy Bell’s defense, he’s never had a job in a good situation. I don’t know if he’s a good manager or not, but I know that you can’t tell by his win-loss record.

by badradiorules on Apr 20, 2008 11:18 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

True

I’m just going by some decisions he made that I heard about late last year when he was with the Royals. From what I gather, he is considered Kansas City’s version of Buck Showalter.

But that’s a pretty weak basis to form a damning opinion, I know. Still wouldn’t want him managing the Rangers though, but perhaps he might make an interesting candidate for the third base coach job after Walbeck is made manager.

The typical career path seems to be...

Minor league manager, then first base coach, then 3rd base coach, then big league manager. Sometimes bench coach gets thrown in between 3rd and manager, but overall 3rd base coaches are usually the ones considered for manager opportunities.

Just to be clear.

Rosenthal said that he was told that Hicks said ‘changes would be made’ or was that Rosenthal’s interpretation of Hicks’ pre-road trip meeting.

Seems really premature.

I would guess Art Howe would become interim manager.

Mets...

also not good.

I see him and Wash together. I think if Wash gets the axe so does Howe. Walbeck would be the more likely internal candidate imo. But again I don’t see Wash getting fired this year.

From what I've seen,

it’s usually someone like, say, the bench coach that gets promoted to finish out the year.

Was Jerry Narron one of Oates’ coaches when Oates stepped down?

by Inkara1 on Apr 19, 2008 4:48 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yea

I would assume we would name an interim manager and then re-evaluate at the end of the year.

Triple A pitching coach

I forget his name but lets just name Connor head coach and get that guy to the majors. If we focus on pitching and defense and getting those mental lapses off the field (like any little league coach should be able to do) our offense should be decent enough. How many wins would it take to win the west this year??? Playoffs in 08!!!

I don’t really like him as a pitching coach and it doesn’t seem like he will be fired or anything. Maybe My thoughts are a little outdated though because our staff has looked great so far this year aside from jennings of course.

Head coach?

I assume you mean manager, but this is a terrible idea. Both Walbeck and Howe would be better options within the staff. I have some reservations about Connor as a pitching coach, let alone making him the manager.

Im still ok with wash

He had half the lineup out with injuries last year and terrible performances in the first couple months by his star players. Early on he was too attached to kata and such but later in the season we couldnt see if he had adjusted because he had no choice but to play vazuqez everyday.

His bullpen management was pretty good for the second half.

So far this season I liked how he adjusted moving hamilton to 3rd and MY to 2nd, bradley to break up the lefties 4th, etc..

The defensive issues are definitely annoying and I did give im credit last year for kinsler so i guess he should get the blame tihs year but i still have a tough time blaming a manager for those kind of mistakes.

The most annoying thing wash has done this year was insist JD get broussard. although bradley has been worth it so far, injury problems and all.

Todays lineup is pretty werid, but hes been giving a roster that cant hit lefties, it causes problems.

No idea who id want to replace im if he were fired, but I dont really believe he is going to be fired midseason. Maybe after the season if they are significantly under 500

washington

like i said earlier, im starting to have doubts about him but it’s too early to talk firing him

i did see some improvement in his game management last year, but little things like mental lapses and sticking with guys like broussard are problems for me.

and as far as the defensive issues, i’m not sure if thats poor coaching or just poor defensive players.

If this is true...

It’s f-ing ridiculous. The same fickle Tom Hicks bullshit that we’ve been putting up with for years. If Hicks fires Washington just months after extending him then it proves he’s a fool who hasn’t changed his flighty ways. I would expect Daniels to be let go by the end of the year.

But that river of tears has dried for all of us.

Heh..

You would think Hicks would learn his lesson when he extended Buck’s contract before he fired him..

So how did Hicks make his fortune, he seem like an idjiot?
