Today's lineup

For those who don't know what the hell Ron Washington is thinking most of the time, today's lineup is not going to help...

2B Ian Kinsler
SS Michael Young
CF Josh Hamilton
3B Hank Blalock
1B Jason Botts
RF David Murphy
DH Gerald Laird
C Adam Melhuse
LF German Duran

The bench is Bradley, Broussard, Vazquez, and Cat.

I have to assume Bradley's knee is such that he requires a day off today.

Laird

Can’t you switch positions? If Melhuse was to go down couldn’t Laird take over catching and someone else DH?

Ah, negative

If the DH switches to a position, the pitcher has to bat.

I hope...

Calm down,

Wash is a beast, he knows what he is doing…

Probably isn't

but you dont really have to cover much ground in LF at Fenway. As long as he plays the monster well, its not that big of a deal.

It will

be interesting if Laid will do a lot better offensively that he doesn’t have to have catcher duties this game.

okay this is how I would have done it,

2B Ian Kinsler
SS Michael Young
CF David Murphy
RF Josh Hamilton
3B Hank Blalock
1B Jason Botts
DH Gerald Laird
C Adam Melhuse
LF German Duran
Not alot of flexabilty for spots 6-9 and seeing how you dont want cat in left Duran is the only other option. Im really not sure how Wash could see The Murph as an adequate RF option. If and when Bradley needs a day off stick Hammy over there and put The Murph in center. It really isnt rocket science.

Oh yeah,

and Hammy hitting fourth is the way to go. Blalok could be the “insurance hitter” behind him. Bat Bradley third when ihe is in the lineup.

do you really drop

Murphy in the 3 hole against a left-handed starter?

Not aweful:

.286/.318/.524 this year

But I just wouldn’t count on him performing up to what you need in that slot.

Like SarasotaRanger just said… I like him a lot, but I think you’re more likely to get better performance out of him lower in the lineup.

Your still batting R,R,L,L,S,L,R,R,R

Maybe Duran could help break those three leftys up. And Hank shouldnt bat third.

by NYTXFAN on Apr 19, 2008 4:27 PM CDT up reply actions

Kins and MY are 1,2

Period. You can’t bat German in the heart of the order. Seriously. Which of these righty would you bat in the 3,4,5 spots? There’s nothing wrong with Hank batting 3rd. He’s done it this season.

I havent gotten to see a game so IM not really sure how he has preformed

but this is a tuff 1-9. Not much to work with. Im not really sure why he seems to think he needs to run a new and diff lineup every other game though. He should make a plan and not just pick spots 3-9 out of a hat.

Adam loves him some Lard

by NYTXFAN on Apr 19, 2008 4:35 PM CDT up reply actions

3,4,5 and sometimes 6

have been a combination of Bone, Hammer, Byrdman, and the Milt. There hasn’t really been anyone else capable of handling those spots (except perhaps the Murph at times). It’s the outfield defensive alignments that have been head scratching at times this year.

Couldn’t Murphy play RF again? If you’re good enough to play Center odds are you’re good enough to play anywhere in the OF.

the only real problem

is the backup catcher thing. that’s like rule 1 in terms of lineup management. it shouldn’t even be a question.

When Minn. would DH Mauer, did they have an emergency third catcher? do the rangers?

as to the lineup

the bottom of the lineup is atrocious but you gotta like the confidence in botts (if you’re a botts fan i guess)

one difference

laird is no mauer.

dh’ing the catcher without an emergency catcher is pretty dumb, but i’d make an exception to keep a guy like mauer in the lineup, or victor martinez.

Baseball is the cruelest of sports ...

...and it almost always exploits the weak at the worst possible times.

The way things are going for this team, you can almost guarantee the fact that Wash playing both catchers in the game (with one at DH) is going to bite him in the ass.

What this lineup also tells me is that with Bradley’s wonky knee, this team needs a right-hand stick who pastes leftys.

If Board Game needs...

The only thing I don’t get is Laird at DH. He can’t hit, and now who is the backup CA going to be if Melhuse gets hurt?

switch Laird to Catcher and put Milton at DH…

You can't do that

If your DH goes into the field, you lose the DH position and the pitcher has to bat.

It’s only worthwhile if you’re protecting a lead and are out of defensive options. Yankees did it back in the 2005 ALDS.

Still dont think its that big of a concern to have both C's in a game once in a while.

its not like catchers go down left and right on a daily basis.

although when that second C is adam melhuse its stupid for other reasons.

Gerald Laird is my hero.

Meh

At least he’s playing Botts versus a lefty and not Bromide.

That’s an improvement, right?

If Bradley really needed a day off, what was his other option for DH? Cat and Bromide can’t hit a lefty to save their lives. At least Laird has a history of being pretty good versus lefties. Having two guys who can’t play against lefties makes filling out a lineup card versus a lefty kind of hard.

Looks like wants to get in as many righties as he can against Lester. Is Bradley’s knee really THAT bad so much to where Laird has to DH?

by dieselT8 on Apr 19, 2008 5:29 PM CDT reply actions

Howe

Holy shit that is a bad lineup. Isn’t Howe being paid to keep Wash from doing something this dumb?

The lineup should be:

Kinsler 2B
MY SS
Hamilton CF
Cruz RF
Blalock 3B
Shelton 1B
Botts DH
Murphy or Cat LF
Laird C

There was no reason to trade for Broussard with Botts and Shelton here and Davis on the way, and Byrd is a mediocre 4th outfielder wasting space.
