Game 2 Post Game Thoughts
Josh Hamilton is really awesome. Watching him flag down a couple of balls out there -- balls that would have been extra base hits at any other point in the 21st century for the Rangers -- was amazing. If he doesn't make those plays, the home run in the 9th might have been irrelevant.
Vicente Padilla was solid. Have to feel good about that.
C.J. got the job done.
And someone needs to tell our friend the Cuban Banned Blogger that the Mariners aren't the favorite in the A.L. West.
Rangers are in first place.

Game threads
That's a lot of comments. I don't know how some of you even see any of the game trying to read comments and post. I couldn't bear to look until the game was over.
Hamilton is effin' cool.

But Tim McMahon sucks. If they could get a dude like Albert Breer for each of the blogs it would be significantly better than having a dude like McMahon be the jack of all, master of none (or nothing in this case).

they are NOT HAPPY

I remember a game thread with over 800 last year, I believe.
It was late summer, extra innings, possibly against the A's. But you're right, this is probably a record.

My postgame thoughts?
Well, there's a lot of them right now, but the main ones are:
HELL YEAH!!!
and
Josh Hamilton ROCKS!!!
Seriously, though... the infield defense needs work. Young looks like a chump out there.
But hey, good outing from Padilla, good work by Guardado and Wilson...
HELL YEAH!!!
by lonestarJon on Apr 2, 2008 12:45 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
2 games, 2 QS
very nice, although part of that goes to a Seattle offense that is going to struggle to consistently score runs this year. The infield defense has been nothing short of embarassing. Murphy seems determined to keep his name in the lineup.
by Randy Richardson on Apr 2, 2008 12:46 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
thats by far the most encouraging thing
both millwood and padilla just looked different than at any point last year.
Hamilton I already liked, murphy i already liked.. millwood/padilla i was just wishfully hoping.
Obviously its just 1 start, but considering how rare starts like that were last year its a good sign. Although it must be noted it was seattle in seattle.

bullpen and defense
at least today, it was hard to tell how much was on benoit and how much on defense. if benoit gets the out first, then maybe he's not giving up hits. who knows

Supposedly
the IF is eaten up by the flu. Hopefully that is most of the defensive problems. Young is always going to have limited range, but I wouldn't expect him to make a lot of bad throws during the yeat.
I think the OF defense should be fun to watch all year long.

There is a lot to look forward to
in this scrappy team this year!
Defense in the outfield is going to be really fun to watch.
Players that need to come back to form and hit, are going to do so.
Young guys are going to be stepping up big!
Pitchers at the top of the rotation are going to be what they should.
If we win tomorrow night, and take the series, that is going to be a huge start to this season! Taking a lot of momentum into LAAAAA.

A little too soon
to make any prognosis on the season. These two games could very well have zero indication on the trends for this season... it'll be about game 15 or so, when we've been through the rotation a few times, when we know where we'll hopefully (or not hopefully) trend towards.

agreed...
Even given how the AL West doesn't really strike too much fear into me, I really don't have any illusions about winning the division...
Tonights game just made me really excited about the direction we're going.

Although....
I do expect Jim "In Need of Prozac" Reeves to write an article outlining either a) how the Rangers should start planning trades to rebuild the farm team or b) how the Rangers are going to win the AL Pennant. Given his one game prediction, two games should be more than enough to predict the future.

while thats very likely true.
its also not like last year was their typical year. their combined career ERA is around 4.1. They should be at best #2 and #3 instead of #1 and #2, but they arnt actually really bad ptichers just because of one injury plagued bad season.

You have a point
But that can be said for any and all teams in the Majors. So remember, if Bedard and Felix can't get wins against our offense...
by lonestarJon on Apr 2, 2008 2:04 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Your offense is actually not that bad.
-- it's your pitching and defense.
by redwolf75 on Apr 2, 2008 4:55 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
right now
Felix and Bedard are much better than anything in your rotation. that said, we only scored 7 total runs in the first two games. I'd like to see how we do in warmer weather without the whole team under the flu watch, and I'd like to see some of that attention to defense pay off. and maybe Josh Rupe - is that too much to ask, for some Josh Rupe tonight?
either way, if Anaheim thought we'd just roll over and give them 3 or 4 in a row without a fight, obviously, our pitching has another thing to say about that. just two games, but a huge two games to prove that our top 2 guys are both healthy and effective...crossing my fingers for Jennings to join them tonight

the M's announcers immediate reaction to Hamilton hitting a HR, is to bring him down and talk about how he battled and was suspended for his drug use, and not to talk about how he just shut that entire stadium up.

I could see that
I would place a ceiling of 18 wins for Millwood, 17 for Padilla and 16 for Jennings. If all three stay healthy, they COULD reach those totals...most likely, we'll see a 16 game winner, a 15 game winner and a 13 game winner out of those three if they log 180 + innings each, and I'll take that

Great
I watch every out of game 1.
This game starts at 10 EST so I tivo it to watch tomorrow. My only fear in checking the box today is that it will end with some amazing late inning heroics.
The thrill is spoiled. Oh well. Great win.

I'm actually a little concerned...
about the new LSB ruining some games for me. I use mlb.tv, so there are going to be days that I will avoid the box score, and catch the archived game when they put it online.
While the game is running, LSB has the box score at the top, and it is my homepage, so if I go to the web while the game is ending, it could be ruined for me.
Sort of a suggestion here, being posted in the wrong place, but maybe they should have that collapsed by default, and then a button on it, to expand it.

I had it paused on DVR
and ended up an hour behind. had to fight myself to not check LSB before it was over, and was glad I did...although I did have a friend text me with "J-Ham!!!" which kinda ruined that moment. Still: seeing him do it, and against Putz, and Kinsler's hit before that setting it up, and CJ's closing moments (double the enjoyment as he's one of my closers on both of my fantasy teams) were just awesome to watch.

INF defense
I know it was bad, but Blalock, Young, and Kinsler have the flu, right? Playing in sub-40 degree weather with influenza would NOT be fun at all. Not making excuses for the misplays, exactly, but that could easily have had something to do with them.
