Evan Grant and Richard Durrett on last night's game

Richard Durrett has some bloggy thoughts on last night's game, with some Vicente Padilla and C.J. Wilson love along with the expected on Josh Hamilton...

As does Evan Grant, who points out how working the count on Monday might have helped set up the win on Tuesday for the Rangers, and has at the end a shoutout to the LSBers...

I know I'm a guilty party

But I think we should stop flaming MacMahon's posts. I'm starting to feel like it makes LSB look bad. So I'm done over there (and, again, I'm admittedly guilty), and I encourage everyone else to be done as well.

If you want to rip MacMahon, let's do it over here.

LSB 2.0 confuses and scares me.

+1

That's my strategy exactly.

Right around the time all the young talent is ready to contend is when the organization will realize that Ron Washington is the wrong man for the job.

Evan Grant

Very cool for him to defend us over there.

But that river of tears has dried for all of us.

our comments and spiteful remarks often don't deserve defending.

funny also

because a few called out evan grant's prediction of the M's winning the west.

but regardless, it doesn't take too much research to figure out that the whole world picked the Angels to win. he writes about sports for a living. How hard is it to go to a baseball preview site and find out what they are saying. nothing fancy, no BP, ESPN and Yahoo will do

Evan earned some points back after the ST blue-glove incident that I was quietly still pissed about. Even if it was directed to a writer I make a point not to read

MacMahon's comment

was obviously very tongue-in-cheek so I don't know why it matters anyway...

Wash

Has delivered on 1 of the 2 things I expected him to bring the Rangers from Oakland. The Rangers are doing a much better job working the count, they still strike out too much, & theyre not like the Yanks or the Red Sox or the A's but they are showing a huge improvement. He hasnt delivered on improving the defense, however. The Rangers, frankly, aren't a gifted team defensively but they shouldnt look as LOST as they do out there.

Seattle

It has to be quite an adjustment to go from mid-80s Arizona to mid-40s Seattle. I would think the cold is having a negative effect. In addition, 2 or 3 of the guys have the flu, which doesn't help. If we're still struggling defensively in June, maybe there is a problem. I think it's way too early to call Wash out for the team's defense.

Tommy Hunter article

He's a firecracker ...

While growing up, Hunter was a two-time junior Olympic judo champion. He said his judo skills haven't been put to the test by a batter charging the mound -- yet.
"I'm not the smallest guy, so I don't think guys would come at me," he said. "It would be a bad decision."
Hunter discussed such a situation with new Ranagers President Nolan Ryan, who had a famous moment in his career when he put Robin Ventura in a headlock and landed several punches when Ventura charged Ryan after being hit by a pitch in 1993.
"He asked me what would happen if someone came at me," Hunter said. "I said I wouldn't put him in a headlock."

JJ Putz injured

http://seattle.mariners.mlb.com/news/press_releases/press_release.jsp?ymd=20080402&content_id=2483835&vkey=pr_sea&fext=.jsp&c_id=sea

Ouch, and now we know why he served up that meatball to Hamilton. And the fact he had no control.

Ladies and gentlemen, what you last night was not the real JJ Putz.

by redwolf75 on Apr 2, 2008 5:22 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

However

That was the real Hamilton Putz injury or not

by 1man5tools on Apr 2, 2008 5:25 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hamilton or not,

if JJ was not injured, that would;ve been an easy save.

He clearly had no command OR velocity.

by redwolf75 on Apr 2, 2008 5:26 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

fine

if MY and Kinsler didn't have fevers, they wouldn't have made those errors. Sad again?

continued:

see JJ in action last year compared to that performance.

by redwolf75 on Apr 2, 2008 5:29 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

that doesn't really answer my comment

but fine, JJ would have been lights out.

even the article says kinsler got his hit before putz's injury. and i do remember JJ blowing a save to a certain crappy AL West team

by ab03 on Apr 2, 2008 5:30 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

good points!

talk about sore losers. Let it go!! You LOST!

"He'll be better next time he gets the ball"

Ron Washington says after Fukumori gives up 2 hits, 3 earned runs, 2 walks and a couple of wild pitches in a third of an inning.

Well that's comforting!

by LAMuscleFag on Apr 2, 2008 5:31 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Um, where did I come off as being as

a sore loser? This has nothing to do with losing. This has to do with the awesomeness of JJ Putz and the fact he was pitching hurt.

by redwolf75 on Apr 2, 2008 5:34 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

"If J J was not injured that would of been an easy save"

You are making excuses for his performance. You don't know what the outcome would of been had he not been injured. It's like me saying if Kinsler would not of been sick in game 1 or Young and Blalock in game 2 then the outcome would of been differant. It's very likely but I have no way of proving that and neither do you. Let it go!

For his own performance.

Not for that of the team. I care nothing about making excuses for the teams loss. I care for making valid excuses for JJ's substandard performance.

Oh, and I fail to see why you want to argue about this.

brett

don't you have a comment you'd like to make?

by ab03 on Apr 2, 2008 5:47 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes...

we all know JJ is a god. He would never blow a save when healthy. So was he hurt last year when he blew those 2 saves as well?

It happens, get over it, your closer is human too.

by redwolf75 on Apr 2, 2008 6:05 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't understand what is so

hard to comprehend about my statement.

The Mariners lost. They deserved to lose the game -- there is no excuse for a loss (unless one of your team gets assassinated midgame, or the like).

Simply, the fact that JJ had zip command due to an injury and zero velocity was much more responsible for his suckitude than human error.

by redwolf75 on Apr 2, 2008 6:10 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well...

Protecting a 1 run lead with the top of the line-up due up is probably not an "easy" save under the best of circumstances. Point taken that he was not at his best.

The press release says that he felt discomfort on a pitch to Michael Young. As I recall, his command and velocity were not quite up to the levels of his previous appearance from the beginning of the inning.

by mgb5 on Apr 2, 2008 5:43 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

If he watched JJ last year for almost every

outing (as I did), a 1 run save would be pretty much perfunctory.

At one point he saved 3 consecutive games versus the red sox, and each of them were 2-1 run leads.

by redwolf75 on Apr 2, 2008 5:45 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Okay

if JJ was not injured, that would;ve been an easy save.

He clearly had no command OR velocity.

Last year, he gave up a game-winning home run to Ramon Vazquez.

It doesn't mean that he isn't a great closer -- he is.

But to say, well, if he isn't injured, that's an easy save...that's crap. Even elite closers get beat occasionally.

by Adam J. Morris on Apr 2, 2008 7:14 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Putz is homer-prone

I would go so far as to say that if Putz had any weakness, it is that he's homer-prone. He's given up 29 homers in his career in about 278 innings. While that's not Blyleven territory, that's still fairly high. Last year he gave up 6 homers. How is that meaningful? well, he only gave up 11 runs on 37 hits in 71.2 innings. that means that 16% of the hits he allowed were homers. the league average is 11%. his career average is 13%.

So, Mariner fans, your elite closer sometimes gives up the occasional home run. Live with it. (unless you believe that he was hurt 6 times last year and 29 times in his career).

staying low for a couple weeks to avoid facing him again.

would hate him as he drives a huge fucking hummer

by redwolf75 on Apr 2, 2008 5:43 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Closer confrontation!

Ironically, between the SUV-hating Californian closing for Texas and the Hummer-driving Texan closing for Seattle.

by mgb5 on Apr 2, 2008 5:46 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Closer?

They won't need a closer after what we do to the presumably healthy Silva. Or is he hurt too redwolf?

by 1man5tools on Apr 2, 2008 5:47 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Considering he's pitched only 10 pitches

in that time span, yes.

If not, than Ryan Rowland smith is also availible. In some ways, he reminds me of CJ Wilson. Has a good fastball for a LHP (a high K rate) and also is decent versus RHBs (not a LOOGY)

by redwolf75 on Apr 2, 2008 5:48 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Nonwithstanding the fact

that fucking Bavasi has traded away Sherrill and Soriano in the last two years (who are incidentally, both closing), the bullpen is still a position of depth and strength for the Mariners. It sucks, since I love JJ, but am not hugely worried about the affect it has on the Mariners' potential chances if he's only out for 2-3 weeks. This is not Felix injured.

by redwolf75 on Apr 2, 2008 5:51 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

great

you know, I may have misled you by responding to your comments but I actually couldn't care less about the mariners bullpen. Thanks for your insights, but it's really ok. I only pay attention to Rangers baseball so this information is useless to me.

by ab03 on Apr 2, 2008 6:10 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

no really

i don't care about the mariners bullpen. i'd rather eat glass then get one more nugget of information about the bullpen from you. my (4) posts are easily explained by trying to expose how ridiculous it is that you thought you're doing something good by posting the injury the way you did.

please, don't doubt my intentions. I CARE NOTHING ABOUT THE MARINERS!

This may shock you, but we really don't care about the Mariners here, we are Rangers fans.

I hate to break it to you,

but that subthread had nothing to do with "caring about the mariners."
Merely JJ Putz, and I wasn't the one blowing it out of proportion.

And funny that you attempt to call me out as a troll. I'm not the one spewing out a constant stream of snide comments. I guess you guys get tired of flaming each other, which looking around some of your threads happens on a pretty large scale.

by redwolf75 on Apr 2, 2008 7:21 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

what are you referring to?

there are like 3 posters who get insulted on here.

by DSheppard on Apr 2, 2008 7:24 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

"flame sub threads"

what? flames in threads maybe?

and when someone asks what you are referring to, its obviously meaning specifically. because the idea that lonestarball has mass ("large-scale") flaming going on is ridiculous. Certainly some people occasionally do so and there are a few guys who get deservingly bashed for certain things, but thats the internet.. this is one of the more civil message boards/blogs ive been on, which is (maybe sadly) quite a few.

by DSheppard on Apr 2, 2008 7:56 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

A "sub-thread"

is one nested "sub topic."

Perhaps I'm guilty of small sample size-osis, but I've seen a a lot of flaming on here compared to other SBN sites I visited.

Getting a huge number of snide and troll like comments aimed at me didn't help either (although you weren't one of those).
