Steve Phiilps on Micheal Young
Ben in Texas: With the steady demise of the Ranger's season, what would be likelyhood of Micheal Young getting traded? And if so, what would be his expected value in return?
Steve Phillips: (1:27 PM ET ) Michael Young could bring back some decent talent. Most teams probably wouldn't look at him as a SS, more as a second baseman, as his defense has declined. His value is probably greatest on the other side of the infield. You are getting some age with him, and he won't bring back a No. 1 starter, but he could nab a blue-chip prospect. Most good teams already have a good SS, so he'll be better served as an offseason trade .
Hummm lets see....Who could need a 2B by the break?
Col, LAD, Cubs, CHW, Indians, maybe KC....
Just a thought...

Nope
Young has a no-trade clause, and the length and price of the contract is effectively a no-trade clause.

I think he'd waive his no-trade clause

Actually
The first thing that came to mind here was whether Young might be the one demanding the trade.
That’s one way around a no-trade clause.
I don’t pay much attention to preseason baseball player puff pieces, but recent press on Michael Young documented substantial exasperation about the losing.

Not yet.
I think he becomes a 10-5 guy in 2010
His first season was 2000, you know, the year we went from a consistent playoff team to a consistent cellar dweller.

Col, Indians don't need a 2B, but White Sox and Dodgers might be good matches.
No sense in thinking about Kershaw. Dare we mention the Rays?
The best answer for the Rangers, though, is to move Young back 2B and Kinsler to LF, unless Hank is not viewed as a long-term piece, which would mean moving Young to 3B.
I think the Cubs want more power out of their second baseman, but their power-hitting second baseman is playing OF, and their versatile 4th OF is playing 2B. KC isn’t going to be a buyer, most likely. Besides, their doing ok with the Grudzielanek’s of the world.

No
There’s no point in moving Kinsler off of 2B to LF, particularly since I doubt Young will be better than Kinsler defensively over the next few years.

I think I know what you're getting at.
MY at 2B might be a slightly above average hitter with average defense. Kinsler in LF might be a slightly above average hitter with average defense.
MY at SS is an average hitter with below average defense. Kinsler at 2B is a much above average hitter with average to above average defense. Keep Kinsler at 2B to maximize his contribution and get a masher LF.
Which leads to the question: Is the downgrade in defense at SS a bigger problem than not having a masher LF? I would like to see a statistical analysis of that question. My hunch, which why I stated “the best answer for the Rangers”, is that a really good SS could do more for the team than a masher LF.

So, I'm probably wrong.
A quick look by checking into Win Shares suggests a masher LF adds a lot more value than a slick SS, even for groundball teams like Colorado and Texas.
Keep Young at SS; maybe hide him at 3B. Above all, make Byrd (or Murphy) a true 4th OF by picking up someone like Pat Burrell.

Young can be traded if
he waives his no trade clause and the Rangers pick up half of his contract.

Young
I really don’t think there is any point in dealing him this season. The offseason maybe, but not now. There is no in house replacement for him and Andrus is not ready. While the team sucks they might as well hold on to him until Andrus is ready. It’s not like teams are going to be beating down the door for him this season anyway.

If they can get a big return
and get out from under what will be a terrible contract in the out years, they need to move him, replacement or not.
We can put a AAAA player at SS if necessary to get through the year if we get a big enough return.
Honestly though, I don’t see who would give us Blue Chippers for him.

Not going to happen
This may be interesting to speculate about, but it’s completely useless to seriously consider. Not every Rangers fan looks into defensive stats or studies the minor league system. If you trade MY, you lose a whole lot of fans that see a lunch pail, 200 hit, FOTF-type guy in MY. From a business perspective, there are a whole lot more of them than us. No way this happens.
by Jack Nicholson 1974 on Apr 23, 2008 2:59 PM CDT 0 recs
You can trade MY
and Attendance rises the year after next if the team has a winning record next year.
MY might bring in a trivial number of fans, but winning is where you sell tons of tickets. The thought that he sells a significant number of tickets is absolutely absurd. Winning sells tickets. Marquee players sell tickets. Slightly above average SS do not sell tickets.
Teams should Always, Always, make the move that makes you a winning franchise faster. If you could get out from under that contract, and pick up some Blue Chip prospects, you are much closer to winning.

Ok
You tell me the trade that gets rid of MY and immediately (ie. the next year) gets us more wins. It is not out there. As soon as we trade MY for a Salty-like (if we are lucky) AAA prospect, we’ll hear nothing but people complaining about the cheap Hicks and stupid JD trading away all of this talent and having nobody on the ML roster to show for it. Besides, there is no way MY delivers anything close to a blue chip, high-ceiling, close-to-ML-ready player.

Well
if we were able to trade MY for a Salty-like prospect, pretty much everyone on this board would be doing backflips. Even the fatties would be doing cartwheels.
But, how do we know for sure there are no good Michael Young trades out there? Ken Williams is dumb, Ozzie has gone out of his way in the past to let the world know how much he hearts Michael Young, and they have Juan Freaking Uribe playing 2b for them right now, so maybe the White Sox would help us out. And I’d argue that any trade that allows us to get rid of Franchise Face and his contract and allows us to bring in a defensive minded SS for next year makes us better.

I don't have the final analysis on this idea, but one thing I'll put out there
is that by using Win Shares as a quick analysis tool it shows that Hanley Ramirez’s (25.0) hitting contribution was more than twice that of the Tulowitzki’s fielding contribution (10.9).
Not the final word, but makes me want to think more about the value of a slick fielding shortstop who isn’t at the Oz level.

Well,
I agree that the trade may not exist, because I don’t think any other team is dumb enough to give us Blue Chippers and take that contract off our hands and have MY agree to it.
I just have a huge problem of the whole “We can’t trade away player X, because he is a fan favorite, and we will lose fans”. That is the biggest load of crap argument I have ever heard. If the Rangers win, fans will turn out. That will be true if we loaded up the team with recently paroled criminals.
