Rosenthal on Wash

Agree with his summation about what the perception will be if Wash is fired. I've been in the camp of growing discontent with Wash, but now I'm leaning more toward letting him hang in there for a while. The team's performance can't get worse (can it?) and a new manager probably won't save this season. Why not give Wash a few more weeks and see what happens?

Wash
Has he done anything, I mean ANYTHING, in his 18 months on the job to make you think he is a capable major league manager? If so, keep him awhile. If not, and that is the side I would support, then they might as well cut their losses sooner rather than later.
Fire Ron Washington
He got
good performance from a sub-par team last year (after the early season suckage.) I’m not saying he’s a genius, but I also don’t think the current suckage is really his fault.
Grime, "the magic shortening that spreads like lard."
He did? Really?
I mean, outside of a good July, I don’t think there was anything “good” about the season. You could perhaps argue that, outside of the first 2 months of the season, he got a mediocre performance out of a sub par team, but it is a stretch to say it was good.
Fire Ron Washington
He did
The Rangers had one of the top five records in baseball for July and August, if I remember correctly. They were playing very good baseball.

Why prolong
Although it would leave a bad taste in my mouth, why prolong?
An immediate change like this could help relieve fan agony.
Wash is, unfortunately, over his head, time to make a move on Monday.
That is not me in the photo, so relax.

Who cares about Rosenthals sources? Who are they anyway? I wonder what Miles sources have to say on the matter.

Ok, who is his replacement?
We’ll have to find some other surly, maladjusted, Highland Park youth who makes random predictions and has sources in Cinci.
Whatever gets you through the night, 'salright, 'salright.
Team
What affect, do ya’ll think, will firing Wash have on the players? (1) I could see it as a warning shot, which motivates them to get it together. On the other hand, you can’t fire the players. (2) I could see it making it harder for any other manager who comes in here b/c the players may think they are above the manager (both Buck and Wash were fired). (3) I could see it as a way to get a fresh start in the clubhouse and a means to purge all of the negativity that is swirling around the team and weighing down the players. (4) Or, maybe it just pisses off Milton and he kills the entire team. Thoughts?

I bet the players would...
feel bad for Wash, and rightly so because their crappy play would be responsible for his demise. I also bet Michael Young would come out and say something to that effect, but i don’t see firing Wash having a direct effect on their play. Maybe Wash’s replacement could create a different atmosphere and that could help but i think that stuff is overblown. I don’t think anyone would argue that Jim Leyland is a good manager but that’s not doing the Tigers a lot of good right now. There’s only so much a manager can do. I agree with Leyland… ‘Chemistry is a class you take in High School.’

I wonder if Wash realizes...
...that when he is fired from this job he is 99% guaranteed to never catch a whiff of another major league managing job.
Right around the time all the young talent is ready to contend is when the organization will realize that Ron Washington is the wrong man for the job.
i seriously doubt that

Seriously doubt that he realizes it...
...or seriously doubt that he is going to be a one-and-done manager?

Idea
This year is a rebuilding year. No one has any designs on winning the division. The core players on this team seem to really like Rudy. Why not fire Wash and let Rudy audition as the interim for the rest of the season? If things improve, then you consider him for the job. If not, then it’s probably going to be time for Rudy for find another gig anyway. So nothing’s really lost.
Just a thought.
BTW—first Art Howe, too. Just because he doesn’t have the gralls to tell Wash he’s making stupid in-game moves.
