Barry Bonds...why not?
This team is driving me into a depression and I am getting desperate. I am sure that there will be a big backlash from many of you about this post, but how much could this really hurt our franchise? Not only would this put a big bat in the lineup that pitchers still fear but the man would help draw a crowd. I can't imagine us averaging over 15,000 fans a game without a major turnaround. Please let me know your thoughts.
Yes, I understand this might take away some at bats from youunger players. I am advocating using Bonds as our DH, moving Bradley to OF (sit every 5th) and playing Botts at 1B.
As Michael Scott says "everyday I get a little more desperate, and desperate situations yield the quickest results".

Whats the point?
The season is already lost.

I don't think he'll draw that much of a crowd
Is there any record he’s close to conquering now? At least Sosa was close enough to 600 HRs that he had a good chance of getting that number during the season… Bonds is a long way from 800. Plus, given that everyone outside of San Francisco hates him, he might actually drive away potential butts in seats. Certainly the fact he could have a court date at any time can’t be good for the team.

Heck no
I agree that he can still hit and hit well and he would do well in the Ballpark. If we were a contending team and we were one bat away then I would say sign him and Frank Thomas. But all he would do for us right now is take valuable at-bats away from guys like Murphy and Botts. We already have Broussard to fill the role of stealing at-bats from young guys. Sorry dude.

Read my post
Murphy, Hamilton and Bradley would be our OF’s and Botts would be 1B. Cat and Broussard would lose the at bats.

Contending Team
It is hard to decide who is a contender 21 games in. A great middle of the lineup hitter can make this team much better. This current team however is not a contender and not making a move for one of the best hitters in the game (steroids aside) is not smart. He is probably cheap and deserves to be playing over the likes of Ben Broussard and Cat.

I'd have rather seen him in the offseason
than Broussard. However, with the start we had, Im inclined to just play out the season, and get ABs to Botts, let him inevitably fail, and release his ass.

What don't you guys understand?
Botts and Bonds can both play at the same time. Botts would play first. Bonds woukd DH. Bonds would not take any playing time from the younger players.
How can you be inclined to let the next 141 games play out? That is a terrible idea. If I have to watch 141 games with no major changes I will blow my brains out.

Have pictures taken
when you blow your brains out. We can add it to the fail blog.
Botts at 1B for a season makes me want to vomit. Botts anywhere in the field for a season makes me want to Vomit.

I hate to get involved in this,
but Botts is as good as Cat in the field and has faired no worse than BB at first. If Davis is not ready I would rather see Botts than any of those mentioned above in the field.
No Bonds (disgusting thought) bring up Davis, Shelton, Gold, perhaps Salty and say bye bye to BB..

Why would
you want to subject the young players on our team to a clubhouse ballsack like Bonds?
I’d rather Maximiliano take the DH at bats going forward. I’m sure that will be the rallying cry before long.

Hmmm
I was unaware that you have shared a clubhouse with Bonds. Sosa was supposed to be a cancer as well but all the stories were positive towards his attitude. Baseball players or most professional athletes are probably “ballsacks”.
I hope our front office is not here to fill out a team full of players who would win the “most liked” or “most popular” superlatives in the Rangers program. I want players who can piss on a baseball and field there position properly. Not a person who will make me smile the one time I run into him in public.

If you want
a player that can piss on a baseball, I would suggest starting a diary about trading for Moises Alou.
Question: If Bonds isn’t wanted by teams with realistic post-season aspirations and offensive deficiencies, why would a last place team that is rebuilding for the future want his services? I’d rather those at bats go to Botts and then to Max Ramirez.

My guess is
that come July, someone will get a whole lot less particular about Bonds negatives.

Have you seen this team play
They are more than a Barry Bonds away from contending. I agree that the guy still has something but he’s not right for us right now.

That is an assumption
We are not good because we are not hitting with runners in scoring position or fielding our positions properly. I don’t see the harm in bringing him in. What if he comes in and is still the hitter he was but we are still playing sub-.500 baseball in July? You can trade him to a contender. Let’s make sure that players and front office do everything in their power to make sure that we are not a contender over the next 141 games. Too much baseball left.

Why would a team
trade players for Bonds in July when they could have him now for only money?
by jparks77 on Apr 23, 2008 3:11 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well
Teams are not willing to take on the circus that would follow him. But if he plays at a high level for 3 months a team in need of a power hitter would have to give up players to get his services. April can be just like any offseason month. We did it for Gagne and Lofton…no reason we could not get a return for Bonds.

Because in July
holes in your lineup look much bigger than they do in spring to contending teams.

Right on...
...that was a great commercial spoof. Right up there with Scmitt’s Gay and the First Citywide Bank commercials.
Right around the time all the young talent is ready to contend is when the organization will realize that Ron Washington is the wrong man for the job.

Bonds
I would love to Barry here. Unfortunately, I don’t even think the best player of the last 70 years can help this team be competitive.
As much as I would love to watch Barry everyday, I’d probably rather see Cruz get the at bats. I definitely wouldn’t complain if they brought Bonds in. If I lived in Texas, I’d buy season tickets just to watch him every night.

He'd get walked every time
and our clutch hitters would fail every time in trying to bring him in!
by geetar85 on Apr 23, 2008 2:59 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
here's one reason why not to go after Barry
other than the fact that he’s a GIANT douchebag…
we can now get Frank Thomas for free, and he may have the same impact as $10 to $15 million to Barry would be
"No, Donny, these men are nihilists, there's nothing to be afraid of."

Frank Thomas
FT is not the same player that Barry is. Barry does not get to see half of the pitches that Frank got. He is walked too much.

Barry Bonds...why not?
Because he would taint his image if he became a Ranger.

Why not Barry Bonds?
Because the clubhouse is already stagnant as it is. We don’t need to add a huge shadow to it as well.
by lonestarJon on Apr 24, 2008 1:03 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Ignoring
Clubhouse shadows, distraction from the media circus, and any attitude Barry may bring: the legal system may consume more of his time than a baseball diamond. Since I don’t follow his case, and don’t know, isn’t there a chance that even if bonded out, he may be both travel and activity restricted? And good grief, if incarcerated, that would be no way to play a position or DH.
