Beavan to Clinton
Some interesting minor league moves today:
--Blake Beavan to Clinton
--Evan Reed to Bakersfield
And others to help fill out the minimum requirement:
--Chris Dennis to Clinton
--Yukinaga Maeda (37 year old LHP from the Yomiuri Giants) to Oklahoma. Maeda is listed at 5-foot-10, 155-pounds and here is a YouTube video of him with the Giants: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5cRpVTdBLJ4
--and John Bannister makes his Double-A debut with Frisco tonight.

Thanks
is Maeda a Jim Colborn find?
Have you heard any clues on Ian Gac? We’ve been speculating here that maybe he’s made a changed or figured something out (ok, we’re just hoping that might be the case).
...and curse Sir Walter Raleigh, he was such a stupid git.

Maeda
I’m not sure whether Colborn had much to do with it or not. I believe he threw a tryout session in Surprise during spring training for a handful of MLB teams and the Rangers eventually signed him from there.
As for Gac, I have not really heard about him and I haven’t seen him yet, though I am hoping to talk to him in the near future.

Ya know
When Mel Didier mentioned Beavan the other day in the FWST blog it kinda made me wonder if Blake was a little farther along the process than we thought. Guess so.

It's reassuring reading stuff like that
from someone like Didier. It has been so long since the Rangers had good pitching that I find myself sometimes doubting that ANY of these guys are going to be really good.

and then you take a look at
Volquez, Danks, Young, even Galarraga…and realize that these next waves of pitchers just seem to be myped even more and more – which can be disappointing if they don’t pan out, but come on, a few HAVE to right???

Didier called McCarthy one of the five best young pitchers in baseball or something along those lines.

Cool beans on the Beavan move.
Any word about whether he’ll start in the bullpen. I assume Castillo will move into the rotation and Beavan will take Castillo’s place.

Wow that’s amazing. Amid all of the rangers big leauge turmoil, i love the rangers farm. Each of these stories will at least keep me occupied from the repeated agony of loss after loss.

would they hold him out 3 days in a row
if he were being promoted? They only do that one day, right? so it’s got to be a trade or injury, right? both negatives, if you think about it, unless we pull some major pitching talent back

Maybe it’s disciplinary or the flu. 525dp?

Really good
7.1 shutout innings last start. And ERA under 4 for the year. Doubt he does that well in the majors but he has done what was asked of him when we sent him down. I think he’s earned a shot before he can opt out of his contract.

Kennil Gomez
What is the story on this guy? His numbers are impressive. Anybody with info on what kind of stuff he has?
by Houston27 on Apr 24, 2008 6:29 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
MJH a few days ago ...
The 6’3”, 170 lb. Gomez, who turned 20 two weeks ago, was one of those guys who came on to my radar unexpectedly in Surprise last month. Anyone who sees the kid pitch, immediately falls for him.
He features a low-90’s fastball with outstanding late life and a plus breaking ball that he locates well. He appeared in 17 games for the AZL club last summer, allowing just 34 hits and 10 walks in 34.1 innings, racking up 38 K’s along the way.
Like Derek Holland, Gomez belongs in the conversation when discussing the more heralded top young arms in this system like Castillo, Feliz, Font, Main, Beavan, Ramirez….

Hurley
Since this is about the minors and there isn’t a dedicated thread for today might as well throw this here.
Hurleys getting roughed up again tonight so far. Definately not the way we hoped he would start out the year.
by bigsteve on Apr 24, 2008 7:41 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Come on
Dude are you even listening to the game? They hit a homerun to left field in a 30MPH wind that the announcer made very clear that it would never have been a homerun without the homerun. As a matter of fact, the announcer made clear that it would have been a routine flyball. The second HR he gave up, however, was not wind-aided. At worst, he should have only given up two runs.
by sidebar54 on Apr 24, 2008 8:04 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs

that should read.. never have been a homerun with the wind…...

by sidebar54 on Apr 24, 2008 8:06 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
No im not listening to the game
But wind or not I would hope our #1 pitching prospect who some people thought should have started the year in the big leagues would do better thus far. He’s only walked 1 so far which is a good sign but thats about it
by bigsteve on Apr 24, 2008 8:18 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree...
the HR numbers are slightly alarming.
However, the strikeout totals are pretty good. He is missing bats. Something the big league team isn’t doing.
I am watching him tonight and his stuff looks pretty good. Is it possible that his problem is pitching selection? He is getting tons of hitters into two strike counts. I just think he needs a little work on 2-strike pitch selection. Sounds odd. But true.

by brettgardner on Apr 24, 2008 8:04 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
depends on what "make it" means
he definitely going to disappoint a few people on this board who have unrealistic expectations already. then there’s also that pesky attrition rate rate of Rangers pitchers – at least when they pitch for the Rangers

Per MJH ...
But Schlact’s catcher, the aforementioned Ramirez - probably the best hitter I’ve ever seen don a Riders uniform - bailed out his battery-mate, delivering a tee-shot of a two-run jack, an RBI double and a walk in four trips.
Ramirez’s homer was a tee shot that easily cleared the ballpark. It looked like he drove the green on a long par-4.

Duran already in the majors and Salty about to rejoin, Davis, MaxRam, and JMJ moving up to AAA soon, talk of Hunter moving to AA this year and Beavan moving up faster than most thought after his late signing…almost takes the pain away from Hurley looking like he needs more seasoning and Harrison’s next stint on the DL
