If Washington gets fired...
I know there has been a lot of talk on here lately about Ron Washington getting fired. It seems that the consensus is that Matt Walbeck would take over as the interim manager if this happens. Assuming Walbeck does not get the position on a permanent basis at the end of the year, who should the rangers hire? Are there any really good internal candidates? I really have no idea who is out there or would be right for this team. My prerogative would be a manager who is not too far removed from his playing days and will PLAY younger players of course. Any ideas?
I know this is premature since Washington is still the manager, I just want to see what the alternatives are.

But how old is he now? 80? Can he still throw break bricks with his forehead?

It would be more impressive if...
...he threw them with his forehead. I’d buy a Rangers ticket to see that.
Right around the time all the young talent is ready to contend is when the organization will realize that Ron Washington is the wrong man for the job.

What about Bobby Valentine?
He’s always rumored to be on everyone’s shortlist. However, in the past, he’s told them he wants to stay in Japan. But this past offseason, he admitted he would like to manage again in the MLB.

San Diego Chicken
Been around baseball for years. Keeps everyone loose and on their toes. Can instruct the players on how to make those errors look like gags. Every visit to the mound, pitching change, umpire confrontation would be entertaining. Think of the boost in attendance!

How many times do we have to hear “Can’t Touch This”?
And don’t forget the bit where he beats up Barney (the purple dinosaur). That never gets old.
Seriously, I think some kids in the crowd are traumatized by that. For those of you 30-something guys, imagine if the SD Chicken was beating up Mickey Mouse or Bugs Bunny. Or in Ed Coffin’s case, if the Chicken was bitchslapping Betty Boop.

Ron can’t do much with this group of players. Their defense is awful and until that changes they will always lose. If management is content to hoist lousy slogans and promote a baseball team like a trip to the mall, why should we even think about firing the manager? Just hire a likeable guy (Ron) and let things be. We are not going to compete, so we should probably stop expecting to wi. Sort of like the Cubs or the old Brooklyn Dodger fans.
