Hicks, Daniels, and Ryan meeting now
Evan Grant says the triumvirate of Tom Hicks, Nolan Ryan, and Jon Daniels are meeting for lunch around now. He says Ryan and Daniels are supposed to meet with Ron Washington, as well, but doesn't know if it was before this meeting or after.
I'd put the odds of Ron Washington being the manager tonight at about 1 in 3.

My guess
is that they keep RW and accelerate the promotion of their younger players.

Why
What has RW done to prove he can or is willing to work with young players.
It would be wrong to bring up young guys who are not wanted by this manager, bring on more BBs.

That is not
what I would do. I am guessing at what the Rangers will do.

My guess.
Washington is given an idea of what date he should become very worried if the Rangers haven’t turned it around.
Rangers release Broussard and stop listening to Wash on the subject of available FAs.

keep in mind...
Broussard was not a FA… he was traded for.

Concur...
I just see more talk from JD on the direction of the team and who needs to be playing. I think JD gives Wash another month before pulling the trigger.

If they
get swept by the Twins, he’s gone. But I still think he has a month or so to get things turned around.

My guess
is Washington has a job for the game tonight, but if Memorial Day is as bad as it was last year, Wash is gone. I would bet today’s meeting is to establish just how short of a leash Washington actually has to impart his defense and timely hitting “skills” as a manager and coach.

He'll be around
I just don’t see the decision-makers basically announcing that they’re meeting prior to a firing. Usually it’s a closed door meeting no one knows about.

I don't know
...didn’t Johnny Oates resign hours before the meeting (wherein he was to be let go) that everyone – Oates, fans, writers – knew was coming?

RW's time is short
Whether it’s today or a month from now, barring an incredible turn around (which we’d all love to see), I just can’t see RW being around by June.
May as well shake the team up now, IMO, while the season’s still early. Maybe progress can be made by someone else and the players will realize that management is serious this time.

1 in 3?
You mean you’d pay 2 to 1 on a bet that Wash is managing the game in 6 hours? I’ll make that bet any day…
I doubt Wash will last until Memorial Day, but tonight may be way too fast…
Of course, they don’t call him the Ryan Express for nothing…

My question got answered:
Brian (Texas): Ryan, Hicks, and Daniels are meeting today. How long does Ron Washington have, and is the Rangers’ terrible play his fault?
SportsNation Jayson Stark: (1:48 PM ET ) I think he’s now No. 1 on the Most Endangered Manager list. But I’m not sure he’s getting fired today. I don’t think that’s fair. Nevertheless, that team has played reallly, really sloppy baseball. And that tends to reflect on the manager, particularly with an old-school guy like Nolan (who didn’t hire him, by the way).
by BHill on Apr 25, 2008 12:50 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
i think
the question goes to nolan whether it would be a good baseball move to fire washington now and nolan is going to say it’s not (too early/makes the team look weak/doesn’t instill a lot of confidence in future managers).
But, I think they’re going to ask JD at some point whether he still wants Ron Washington as manager and I have no idea what he’s going to say. Clearly, he should say no. Washington doesn’t seem to be embracing playing the young guys and why tie your line to that sinking ship? But then, how does it look if the GM has to fire the manager he hired less than 18 months ago?
JD’s in a bit of a bind here

If I remember
Wash won over Hicks as well (which isn’t particularly hard to do, I’m beginning to think). Wasn’t the story that after Hicks met Wahs, he asked JD “Is there a reason why we haven’t hired him yet?” or something to that extent
by JBImaknee on Apr 25, 2008 1:19 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
factors
I don’t think Ryan would think firing a bad manager makes the team look weak, and it doesn’t matter if the team plays better afterward. Future managers shouldn’t have a lot of confidence unless they hire a guy with some serious skins on the wall. And it’s never too early. If they hadn’t started the exact same way last year, maybe it would be.

Matt Walbeck, new Texas Ranger Manager
My money is that Walbeck becomes the manager. He’s gotten rave reviews in the minors. We’ll see.

Two polls.
1. Who becomes the manager if Wash is let go?
2. Who is the first to break the story? Newberg, E Grant, T.R.?

newberg cannot break stories on his own
no offense to him, but he gets his information from one of those two. my guess is T.R.

I think Newberg may break stories every once in a while
but nothing this big. Firing the manager will come through TR, who is the unofficial official media spokesman of this team

Avoid impulsive decision
If the idea of firing RW has just sprung upon the organization in the last week or so, they would not have had enough time to thoroughly evaluate all of their possibilities. For this reason I don’t think Ron will be canned right away, and even if they do want to get rid of him, they will need some time before making the move.
If RW is going to be a sitting duck, the next guy they hire better be good enough to hang around for a few years. The remainder of this season and the next will be crucial to the long term direction of the team, and we better not be thinking about another replacement midway through the whole thing.
Also say no to Interims, that’s just like wasting the rest of the season without a baseball philosophy. We don’t have that kind of time to waste.

I wonder how much credit the 52-45 ..
.. stretch at the end of last season goes to Wash? Why do Wash teams start slow? Other Rangers teams usually started out hot.. getting to 1st or 2nd place by the All Star break, then falling apart b/c of “the heat”.

I don't think it matters
If they played a whole season at that winning percentage they’re still not all that great. Slightly better than mediocre.

rangers replace washington by bringing back Steve Smith (he did a great job with defense and Tex, Young and Blalock… they’d probably love having him back.

either way it wouldn't help
if he did, he’s showing he cares more about his own ass than his team… if he doesn’t, he proves he has no fire.
Either way, he should be at home watching Walbeck manage the Rangers against the Twinkies tonight.

Maybe JD wants to fire him
and your boy Nolan overruled him? You know, because he’s got SO much experience in running a major league team?
by Dirk Diggler on Apr 25, 2008 5:15 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
There certainly is blamr to assign to JD.
I don’t think Wash is it, though.
JD has yet to construct a potent group of MLers. About all that can be asked of a manager is that the team gives 100%, even in the worst of times. Wash has had a positive impact on the defense played by Blalock, Kinsler, Botts, and Byrd. JD might just need to find more talented defenders to improve the team defense, not fire the manager.
What will be a good test of Wash is whether the play turns around over the next month. That might be an indication that the players have continued to work hard for Wash.

JD better
keep his head down in this meeting because most of this mess is his fault (including the hiring and extension of Ron Washington) and although that Ivy League education helped him get this job, it isn’t going to help him bs the great Nolan Ryan.

Small Sample Size
when you refer to Ranger playoffs.
Are you actually saying that you’d prefer JD over Nolan Ryan when it comes to baseball matters?
And you ask, “How do you know Nolan is that great at anything but pitching?”
I know that you’re smart, but that statement is ignorant.

I've done some research on Ryan
apparently, he never figured out that walking people in baseball was bad, and thats why, despite one of the greatest arms in baseball, he never was a Cy Young winner and was rarely considered the best pitcher in the league during any of the many, many years of his career,
