Good news and bad news

Richard Durrett with some good news and some bad news...

Good news...Salty is up for good, and Adam Melhuse will be let go.

Bad news...Brandon McCarthy has had a setback, and won't start throwing until the ASB, at the earliest.

Ugh.

Damn

Too bad about B-Mac. At this rate, I bet he’ll probably wind up having surgery later this season, and calling it a wash.

Gee, I can’t wait until all the Danks-lovers get ahold of this…

As for Salty – YEAH! Now we just have to PLAY HIM.

Fire JD

He should have known B-Mac was injury prone. Don’t give me this crap that there were no signs of injuries. I don’t care. lalalalalalalalala – I can’t hear you – lalalalala.

What happened to my old signature?

Injury Prone?

In his two major league seasons with the White Sox, McCarthy appeared in 12 games (starting 10) in 2005 and appeared in 53 games (starting 2) out of the bullpen in 2006. He threw a combined total of 186 innings in 2005 between starting in AAA and on the South Side. He only threw 84 innings in 2006 because he was coming out of the bullpen.

So how was JD supposed to know he was GOING TO BE injury-prone since he clearly wasn’t in Chicago?

I’m all for roasting clearly bad moves (Phil Nevin, Matt Kata), but don’t crucify JD on a straw man. McCarthy didn’t start falling apart until he came here.

I’m as disappointed as everyone else in this news, but we all ought to keep in mind that McCarthy’s still only 24.

by Brian Thomas on Apr 26, 2008 2:22 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

That sucks.

The only good I can see is, since this season is lost you’ll be able to let B-mac take his time and fully heal before returning, even if it means next season. While getting a taste of Harrison/Hurley etc later in the year.

B-Mac...

man this sucks.

Elbow injury for a pitcher = not good

Looks like surgery is coming up.

If Melhuse goes on the DL....

That should be a sign that Laird is about to be moved…If the Rangers DFA/release him right off the bat, Laird is goign to be here a while.

It still doesnt make any sense to promote Salty long term and keep Laird here too.

by laxtonto on Apr 25, 2008 6:21 PM CDT   0 recs

Melhuse

did you read the linked blog entry?

by Randy Richardson on Apr 25, 2008 6:25 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

yes...

But are they going to DFA/release him prior to putting him on the DL, orjustlet him go injured?

If you DL him, it gives you 15 days to look at more trades for Laird, and still have a backup for Salty if you more him.

If you dont, you either have to keep Laird all season or scramble for a backup for Salty

by laxtonto on Apr 25, 2008 6:28 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

They're also going to call up Sidney Ponson on Saturday

That requires axing someone off the 40 – so they’d need to put Melhuse on the 60 day DL if they wanted to keep him.

by lonestarJon on Apr 25, 2008 6:30 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Looks like a broken hand...

Doesnt matter then, wouldnt be back enough for it to matter, Laird hopefully will be gone or thefull time back up by the time Melhuses hand heals….

Still leaves the question of what happens if Texas moves Laird? Another guy off of the scrap heap?

by laxtonto on Apr 25, 2008 6:59 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Probably

This is why I didn’t like the fact that they just let Chris Stewart go. You’ll need a backup catcher after Laird is gone, and we really don’t have one.

by lonestarJon on Apr 25, 2008 7:00 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Yeah, the rushed promotion of Teagarden might make TT even more lost at theplate than he is now,

by laxtonto on Apr 25, 2008 7:04 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I dont think we will be seeing

blackgloverighty around much this season.

of course, not his fault. but very very disappointing.

good for salty. i guess my “salty before june 1st” request wasnt as crazy as thought.

Gerald Laird is my hero.

by DSheppard on Apr 25, 2008 6:21 PM CDT   0 recs

You ask, and the Rangers deliver, Shep...

Can you ask for a victory tonight? That would be nice.

by lonestarJon on Apr 25, 2008 6:22 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Damn

i was hoping to be proven wrong about that one.

just got ownaged

by Longhorn on Apr 25, 2008 6:22 PM CDT   0 recs

So the trade was a bust right now

Not held against JD.

But the swap of players itself, a bust.

by SaltyGoesYard on Apr 25, 2008 6:25 PM CDT   0 recs

Do you realize

That if Danks where here, and had put up the numbers he had last year, he would be getting bounced between AAA and the majors right now, and being termed a “dissapointment”?

by lonestarJon on Apr 25, 2008 6:31 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

That's a tough thing pal

Very disappointing. I guess now what we have to hope for is that he’s ever a healthy, effective pitcher. Plus, if surgery is coming, start counting back from six years of service time, ugh.

by zywica on Apr 25, 2008 6:38 PM CDT   0 recs

Ugh indeed.

If it turns out that bmac doesnt pitch this year and needs surgery that keeps him out till next years ASB, I think that may be the nail in JD’s coffin. While you can’t predict things like this and McCarthy never showed signs of injury, it just looks very bad to the fans and media and even worse to hicks and his flippant ways

Teagarden to AAA

The Rangers page on scouts.com has a note saying Tea has been promoted.

...and curse Sir Walter Raleigh, he was such a stupid git.

by t ball on Apr 25, 2008 7:41 PM CDT   0 recs

Oops

just noticed Shrooms comment in the other diary.

Teagarden is hard to figure out. His BABIP suggests some good luck last year and bad so far this year. What kind of hitter is he, really? He has not had anything approaching a “normal” BABIP as a pro.

...and curse Sir Walter Raleigh, he was such a stupid git.

by t ball on Apr 25, 2008 7:44 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Tea

Coming out of college the question mark was his bat. Last year was a suprise because of his bat. I think the question we need to have answered this year is whether last year was a fluke and this year is more in line with what he will do for the rest of his career.

by bigsteve on Apr 25, 2008 7:49 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Nope

2006 AZL: .077 BABIP
2007 A+: .396 BABIP
2007 AA: .421 BABIP
2008 AA: .235 BABIP

His K% has also increased at each level:

2006 AZL: 24.1%
2007 A+: 24.5%
2007 AA: 33.6%
2008: AA: 33.8%

I think his defense will make him a major leaguer but his bat could limit his value to an offensive minded team like the Rangers. If Salty starts to hit, good-bye Teagarden.

by jparks77 on Apr 25, 2008 8:03 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Those are my thoughts, too

As much talk as there has been here of Teagarden taking over in 2009, I think last year gave us way too much optimism about his bat. It might be Ramirez that ends up the better player in the big leagues because of a much, much better bat.

...and curse Sir Walter Raleigh, he was such a stupid git.

by t ball on Apr 25, 2008 10:39 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Ramirez

There is just something about him. If he can develop more power at the major league level, we could be looking at a potential (.850 OPS) hitter. Career MiLB line of .304/.408/.497.

I’ve stated my issues with him moving to 1B. I personally don’t like small target 1B (5’10’’ ish) but I’m sure he could handle it. I think he is potential LF.

by jparks77 on Apr 25, 2008 10:48 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

and with Hamilton and Murphy covering

that wouldn’t be a bad outfield. I’m assuming Bradley is dealt to a contender. Hell, by September you could see Blalock, Bradley, Broussard, Byrd, Botts, and Millwood gone. Duran, Boggs, Davis and Ramirez all up, Hurley at the end of the rotation. Since they’ve released Melhuse I’m assuming they keep Laird at backup.

...and curse Sir Walter Raleigh, he was such a stupid git.

by t ball on Apr 25, 2008 10:52 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Bradley

I wouldn’t mind hanging on to the guy. He could be a valuable trade chip this Summer and his injury issues are a concern. But, he is still young enough and productive enough to have a role on a “rebuilding” team. I like his fire and his ability to get on base.

Ideally, I’d like to see an OF consisting of Boggs in LF, Hambone in CF and Bradley in RF with Ramirez as the DH. I still think Muprhy is a 4th OF but he keeps proving me wrong. The OF defense would be above average and when Andrus takes over at SS and Young moves to 3B, our infield defense will improve as well.

This team will have the talent on the field to win. It might take a few developmental seasons to mature but the product will eventually be something worth celebrating.

At least I hope.

by jparks77 on Apr 25, 2008 11:35 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Boggs

Why on earth do you have him starting over Murphy?

by bigsteve on Apr 26, 2008 12:11 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Read
I still think Muprhy [sic] is a 4th OF

Just because you’re bearish on Boggs doesn’t mean his opinion is invalid.

realistically

they’re both 4th outfielders on a good ml team

by rentz on Apr 26, 2008 6:55 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Boggs

I think Boggs is the superior defensive player with a chance to be a better hitter at the major league level. Boggs has a much better MiLB track record and he’s a switch hitter.

They are probably both 4th OF types but I think Boggs will turn out to be the better player.

The REALLY Bad News

... is that Ponson will be on the roster.

by manderskat on Apr 25, 2008 7:43 PM CDT   0 recs

McCarthy had a setback???

No Way!!!

Who could have possibly seen that coming?

how many LSBers take pleasure in the fact that one of the Rangers players is hurt. Are you really that excited about the news?
