Grant thinks Washington is safe (for the weekend)

I've been repeatedly refreshing the three main Rangers news blogs (DMN, S-T, and TR), watching for news on the managerial situation, and there's a new entry up from Evan Grant:

I think that if a decision comes down on Ron Washington it won't happen until Monday. The off day, even though it's the day before the guy's birthday, just makes for a more natural transition if there is one to be made.

So...if there's no news in the next hour or so, I think it is safe to assume there will be no change tonight, anyway...

If the Rangers sweep the Twins...

you can’t fire the guy on the off day after that, can you?

Maybe JD, Nolan, and Mr. Hicks will throw him a birthday party and top it off by canning his ass.

I figured no firing tonight

It’s awfully late at night. I figure the announcement would be in the morning or early afternoon.

I was fortunate enough to be visiting grandparents in Richardson and went to the game the day Bobby Valentine got fired. I first heard it on the radio on the way to the game.

I remember

listening to the Rangers on the radio when it was announced that Don Zimmer was fired. I was only nine years old. I wasn’t supposed to be listening to the radio at night, but I was. I felt sorry for him that he was being fired.

Walbeck

As much as I like the guy and want to see Wash gone, how do you promote the 3b coach immediately after 2 guys get gunned down at home. Might want to wait a bit longer…

Agreed

It’s completely irrelevent long-term. It would just be a bad coincidence given the problem with fundamentals for which we hate Wash.

Wash

Like just about everyone else here, I expected Wash to get fired today – seemed that all signs were pointing that way. But, I don’t follow Grant’s line of thinking though, he seems to presume they might have made a decision but will wait for Monday, a better transition day. That just seems odd. If they had decided to fire him they would have done it this afternoon – if they have dedided to fire him but want to wait until Monday, their plans could potentially be foiled by a Rangers sweep of Minnesota. I’m not saying that Wash won’t be fired on Monday, but I think that with two well played games this weekend, he will buy himself some more time.

Broussard. I was a big supporter of his at one time. He’s in a slump and I’m sure if he just played solely against RHP, it would just be a matter of time before his numbers were fine. But he is mentally not all there. He lost track of the count during the game tonight and thought he had a walk, which seems innocent, but is just the kind of lapse that this team doesn’t need right now. He also roamed out of position and made an error on a ball that Kinsler could have made an easy play on. For this and the many other mental mistakes he has made, I’d be somewhat surprised if he wasn’t DFAed on Saturday.
Broussard’s 4 MIL contract is a sunk cost. He is extremely unlikely to ever build any trade value. For example, Dan Johnson, a comparable guy, is younger and makes league minimum and has recently cleared waivers. If teams don’t want Dan Johnson for nothing, why would they pay for Broussard. I’d bring Shelton up to split time with Botts at 1st and like LSJ has pointed out, Shelton could be the third catcher to give the team the option of occasionally DHing Salty.

Come the hell on

the Rangers don’t have the stones to pull the plug on Wash before Memorial Day. It’s just not going to happen. I wish they’d start moving this team in a new direction ASAP, but don’t count on it.

So, I would think there are two tests for Washington to pass.

(1) Will the team give an immediate response to pull themselves out of this mess?

(2) Will the team have a sustained response?

If the Rangers play emotional and focused baseball (which is what I’m guessing that Nolan means by “competitive”) through the weekend, then Wash gets a pass to see how they’re doing after a month or so.

wouldn't look good to fire the guy one day after a Rangers' charity event...

...and one day before his 50-something birthday…

if the Rangers sweep… i’d like to see him stay a bit longer…
