(OT) Cowboys Draft - Day 1 Sentiments

While choosing Felix Jones over Rashard Mendenhall initially had me on edge and flew in the face of the "best player available" plan of action that so many champion and so few adhere to, I have to say that I really think Jerry Jones has acquired a keen sense of awareness on draft day.  While Mendenhall might have been the more complete player, Jones better fits our system, and the Titans were obviously hoping the speedy back would fall to them, as they ended up reaching for Chris Johnson at 24.  I think Jerry Jones knew at once that the crop of players available at 22 would allow him to trade up from 28 and grab a second player with a solid round one draft grade, and he did a good job of feeling out the team needs of the next few teams on the board to ensure the Cowboys ended up with the players they coveted.  Houston would have almost surely taken Mike Jenkins at 26 and ended up reaching a full round for Duane Brown to fill a team need.  The Chargers then took Antoine Cason at 27, a player I had hoped the Cowboys would target at 28, making the Mike Jenkins pick seem all the better.

In round two, I sat quietly hoping that one of the WRs would fall, and as they were plucked off the board, one by one, I wondered if perhaps we should have tried to trade up to grab one.  But I really like the Bennett pick, as I think he had the most potential of any of the TEs in this draft, and he could really come into his own in Garrett's various two TE sets.  As many have said, if he goes to Miami instead of A&M, he is almost certainly viewed as the next great Miami TE, and had he stayed in school another year, even at A&M, he almost certainly would have been a first round pick.  I think he can come in and make more of an impact this year than any other player available at 61, and he only recently turned 21, so there is a lot of potential, both physically and mentally, left in him.

Overall, a very solid day one.  I would love to see someone like Andre Caldwell or Earl Bennett fall to the Cowboys in round three, but that may be too much to ask.  A more realistic target might be Tyvon Branch, a collegiate CB who projects as a safety at the next level.

I liked it

I didn’t follow the draft much, but I saw a ESPN draft expert who thought that Jenkins was the best corner in the draft. Certainly the mock draft I saw had him going over ten picks higher.

And picking a RB to break the defense string in first round is great. I dont care too much which RB. I do also recall some draft commentator saying that Jones might be better than McFadden and that he average 8.6 yards a carry.

I’d have rather have picked a WR after Jones, but then again I’d use all my first picks on offensive skill positions.

With PacMan, we will now have not two but supposedly three great corners. Of course I think with Brian Stewart running the show it wont make a lick of difference, but you know.

I hope we grab some WR’s in the later rounds. Other than that I dont care.

I have mixed feeings on Jones

I think Jones is a good player and will be able to help the team immediately and is probably an upgrade from Julius Jones. However, as much as I don’t want to I have to agree with Jean-Jacques Taylor on this one. If they didn’t want to get a guy like Mendenhall as a feature back because they still have Barber then that’s fine. If that is the case then go for one of the other positions you feel you need at that spot. You don’t draft a complimentary player with your first pick in the draft.

Better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.

John jack

is an idiot.

Look, Mendenhall played in the weak Big 10, could not beat out a weak RB for 2 years, and had only one good year. He’s a classic boom/bust pick. I will say he’s closer to a bust. There is a reason he fell, a reason that Stewart went in front of him and the fact that Jones did as well. We have Barber, people seem to talk like we don’t have a RB already. Mendenhall would never get 25+carries here, which is what he would need to be atleast a positive for the Cowboys offense…

just got ownaged

Did you read my post?

I don’t disagree with you about Mendenhall. That’s why I said if they didn’t want him because they have Barber then that’s fine. That’s not the problem. The problem is using pick that high on a part time player. They could have had Jamaal Charles in the second round if they wanted a speedier guy to complement Barber.

Slaton

I think he’s decent but that’s why he was only a late 3rd round pick. And the 3rd round is where you should be picking up guys that will only get part time PT. Not the 1st round.

Better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.

Jones

His role as a complimentary back could change.

He’s also a return man, something the team had in mind when they popped him.

Go Strangers.

my thoughts on mendenhall vs felix

if felix plays for 3 years without d-mac in arkansas, then there is no way he is there at 22. honestly i dont think there is any way he is there outside probably the top 10-12 picks.

that is enough to make me happy.

my question, is mendenhall that much different than barber? and if not, why would you want 2 of basicallly the same guy in your tandem RB system?

let Barber

get hurt and you will see why…

I’m not smart enough to know which back is better but you should take whichever one you had rated higher and based on Jerry Jones elusive comments regarding that question I think they had Mendenhall rated higher.
