2008 NFL Draft: Day 2
Day 1: NICE
That was one heckuva 1st day for the Dallas Cowboys. A quick review of the picks:
1st round, 22 overall:
Felix Jones, RB, Arkansas
John Czarnecki, FoxSports: Now, Jones isn't as talented as McFadden, but when scouts visited Arkansas they came away impressed with Felix Jones and rated him awfully close to McFadden. Jones is light, but he does have great north-south explosion.
Scouts, Inc: Felix Jones gives them an explosive playmaker who can score from anywhere on the field. He is also an explosive returner in the kicking game.
1st round, 25 overall:
Mike Jenkins, DB, South Florida
Scouts, Inc: ...potential to develop excellent man-to-man cover skills because he opens his hips well and is a quick, fast athlete. There's also a lot to like about his versatility; he can line up at safety and can make an impact as a kick returner.
2nd round, 61 overall:
Martellus Bennett, TE, Texas A&M
Scouts, Inc: Bennett isn't an elite run-blocker and doesn't have great top-end speed. However, he's a great value. Watching him on film and knowing that he played college basketball for two seasons, it's hard not to compare him to San Diego tight end Antonio Gates. Much like Gates, Bennett knows how to use his size to box defenders out, and he can make tough catches in traffic. Taking the comparison even further, Bennett is versatile enough to flex out wide.

I would
give the first day a solid b+.
Not drafting Mendenhall who is faster than Jones was a huge mistake, and this is why having Jerry Jones having the final call is not a good idea…
The diary below said that Jones has built up keenness for the draft, which is simply not the fact.
And the secret sources in Cincinnati get the last laugh....

I guess we just differ in opinion
As I said in the diary below, taking Jones over Mendenhall was a risky move, but I still contend that Jerry knows what he is doing on draft day. I really like Felix Jones in this offense. Besides, the days of having just one primary RB are over, as teams have seen that a complimentary two back system can yield better results over the course of individual games and over the course of the whole season.

If Medenhall was faster the Jones...
Then he’d either be a Cowboy or would have been taken before Pitts. Combine aside, it’s pretty much accepted that in pads Jones is the faster back.

Well
between jones, jenkins and pacman i guess we are set as far as returning kicks at least..
Gerald Laird is my hero.

Yep...
Pacman returning the punts and Jones returning the kicks…
This is a problem we have been trying to address 2003.

pretty surprised
but definitely happy with the way things shaped up. initial reaction on Mendenhall passed up is the same as everybody else, but the more I see of Felix and think about it, the better it seems. We want Barber to be our best back, we need a speed complement that can catch the ball and an extra returner, and Felix has more power it seems than Julius had, which is one knock Julius had against him.
Jenkins – steal. Absolute Steal – as a lot of experts had him going as high as 15 or 16. with or without Pacman, this gives us a LOT more flexibility with Roy Williams (we could play Hamlin at SS, either Jenkins or Henry at FS and move Roy into a hybrid pass rusher by moving him into more of a flex-DB/LB role, which is where I think Roy will succeed the most
Bennett – after all the top WRs were gone and we traded Fasano away, I think this is a perfect move. I’m a homer as I’m an Aggie, but the guy’s got “freak TE athlete” written all over him. Comparisons to Gates are unfair and unrealistic, but if he can do what Fasano couldn’t – stretch the field, make difficult and consistent catches and run after the catch, we’re going to have a dominant offense with no holes in it.
Romo throwing to TO, Glenn, Crayton, Hurd, Witten, Bennett and Felix Jones with Jones and Barber running all over the field will be so fun to watch

I just don't get it.....
Why Tellus? Why trade Fasano if you’re going to pick a TE? Bennett may well end up being much better than Fasano but any real impact given our current TE isn’t going to happen for 2-3 years at least because Bennett is RAW. He’s a all projection right now. That has me nervous.

6'7" 255 pounds - he can catch run and block
Raw, I don’t know if that’s how I would describe him – it’s not like he came out as a freshman or even a sophomore, he was the leading receiver and looked pretty damn good. and as I’ve seen several other places if he were a Miami Hurricane, he’d be a 1st rounder and the focus would be shifted to him much more than it is right now. plus, he played in an offense that had two gamebreaking running backs that piled up yards, touchdowns and even a few receptions. and his quarterback had a bad shoulder and was thus more effective as a running quarterback. you tell me: what about Bennett is raw? with the 2 tight end sets the cowboys use, he could very well be a huge part of this offense – much more than Fasano was in Year 2 of his NFL lifeline. look for Bennett to block well and make a few plays in the red zone
and yes, in 3 years when Witten starts to slow down, he’ll be even more of a weapon…

More Aggies please in R2
Although Bennett was probably the only draftable Aggie.

Not in '08
Red Bryant, Chris Harrington, & Cody Wallace will all likely be drafted, especially Red (I’d be surprised if he dropped below the 3rd or 4th round).

i wonder
what does this mean for Newman after this year?? Do you guys think this means that the Cowboys wll risk letting him go with Jenkins and if reinstated, Jones, in the mix??
by hinduplaya on Apr 27, 2008 9:51 AM CDT 0 recs
Its possible
If Pacman can stay out of trouble, and prove he is solid on the field, and Jenkins develops quickily in his first year, they could definatly look at parting ways.

Not sure if anyone saw him on E:60 the other day...
seems to be in much better spirits these days. As a TCU grad, I’ve seen him up close for a number of years now. If Tommy is back to 2006 form, he’ll be a steal for whatever team takes him. If you get 2007 Tommy, it’s a wasted pick.
I wish I knew what he was weighing in at this week. He’s been working hard to get back to playing weight and back to what made him a potential top 10 pick heading into the season. March 6th he was down to 272, from being 287 at the East-West Shrine game.
I could see him go in the 5th if his weight is back to the low 260s now (Playing weight was 252). If he’s still high 260s maybe 6th round or high 7th. I can’t see him go undrafted though, he has too much talent to not see someone take a flyer on him.

If he stops smoking
he could be dynamite.
I was friends with a TCU kicker and he said that he smoked with Blake all the time (along with other players).

With Stanback, Austin and Hurd already on the roster, already familiar with the system and already solid special team players, there doesn’t seem to be a spot for a 2nd day WR on the roster. It looks like we are going forward with Owens, Glenn, Crayton, Austin, Hurd and Stanback at WR.
