The game story in the DMN
It’s sad that all of those problems in the field last night are not just a case of the team having a bad game and more that the team just isn’t good defensively AT ALL.
I really like Murphy in the field.
Young is bad. Broussard is bad. Cat is bad. Botts is bad. Bradley might be good if he could run more than 20 feet without hurting himself. Kinsler isn’t bad but he’s not exactly good either. Third base is pretty average no matter who is standing over there. Hamilton has shown that he has the ability to run down balls and clearly has a big arm but he has also made some terrible misreads on balls and made a few bonehead throws. And of course, there is the catching situation. I still don’t think Salty is very good behind the plate but hopefully we will get to see him on a regular basis to find out or bringing him up was just stupid.

Hamilton
I’d blame those reads and throws on the lack of baseball played over the last several years. I would hope that as he plays more those mistakes will happen less frequently.
Defensively this is a below average infield, decent outfield with Hamilton and Murphy out there. You have a bad mix: a park dangerous for flyball pitchers but with an infield incapable of helping ground ball guys.
...and curse Sir Walter Raleigh, he was such a stupid git.
Maybe so you are right
He did play over 100 games last year though. And if he keeps hitting like he is then we can pull out the old “Josh being Josh” line when he makes a small blunder in the field.

DFA Botts....
I think it’s time for Shelton to get a try until Davis is ready. Botts showed that big long looping swing from the left side last night. He looked like a little leaguer trying to catch up to a major league fastball.
instead of DFA'ing Botts
This team needs to DFA Broussard. In reality, BOtts shouldnt even be playing first base. He Should be the DH. The person who ever swince spring training has been blocking Shelton’s way to first is broussard and we;ve already found out that broussard is one of the worst first basemen in the major leagues. Period.
DFA BB...
Botts can DH and so can Salty when he’s not behind the plate. Shelton can be brought up to play 1B and Botts could get a game or 2 there a week to give him a day off as well.
Botts has not hit well at all, but at this point what does the team stand to lose by giving him more AB’s to see if he can turn it around in his last real shot at the majors.
"The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance."-Socrates
Agreed,
Botts deserves an extended amount of playing time somewhere (DH, 1B, whatever), which is something he’s never really had. If he’s this bad by the ASB, he’s done.
My three favorite numbers: 10, 32, 36. =)

He played last year
Basically every day after the trade deadline.
And he still hasn’t shown any ability in MLB other than the incredible ability to look completely overmatched.
Disgusted as well...
Get rid of Washington. Art Howe would probably follow, since he’s just there as a favor to Washington. Give the reigns to Walbeck. Get rid of every player we signed on a one year deal who isn’t producing and bring up the prospects. If the season’s a wash (pun intended), then we might as well use it to separate the men from the boys. Interesting quote:
Gerald Laird was told he will split time with Jarrod Saltalamacchia, who started Saturday’s game.
“I feel like I’m an everyday catcher and feel like I can be an impact player in this league as a starter,” Laird said. “I’ll just try to get better and play hard, and see if other opportunities arise.”
If other opportunities arise? Like trades? Hmm…

Ponson
I haven’t seen many positive comments on Ponson on this blog… but if he keeps pitching like he did last night, he could be a valuable trade piece (if they don’t try to keep him). He’s still fairly young and has been successful in the past. And he’s certainly not any worse than Jennings.
ponson
he had a nice outing last night, other than the throwing error to third.
at this point i’d rather roll him out there instead of jennings.
"When we're mad we'll use our words. Then the rest of the world will play nice with us. And the only boom-booms will be in our pants." - Ralph Wiggum
Not so sure of his value in trade
His last good year (and he’s only had 2 good years) was 2003 and he’s 31. He probably has more value to the Rangers as injury insurance than to a contending team. Most teams have a couple of Ponsons in their system.
...and curse Sir Walter Raleigh, he was such a stupid git.

Yep, it really helped things for the players to know Wash’s job was on the line.
I felt it was important to get the team home and see how they responded to what’s happened to them,” said Ryan, who had a meeting with owner Tom Hicks and Daniels on Friday. “It tells you something about the makeup of your ballclub, how they respond to adversity like that. In the big picture, that’s beneficial.”
...it's the weekend, so why the hell not?
When he calls me I will answer
In the highways in the hedges in the highways in the hedges
In the highways in the hedges I’ll be somewhere working for my Laird
Bring em' up
The Rangers should get their hot prospects up ASAP. Forget this ‘In a month or two, send them to OKC and then by August they’ll be ready” crap. Bring in Davis , Ramirez. Get rid of BB Jennings,Wright, German. Trade Cat and Laird for anything. The pitching is such a mess right now that they should just bring in Mathis and Murray to get some MLB innings. Who cares about who you have to kick off the 40 because nobody besides Millwood, Hamilton and Murphy have proven the can play in the big leagues.
Two schools of thought
You could let the younger guys get some major league seasoning, but if they’re not physically or mentally ready, then why start their service clock on what will be a horrible, horrible season?
Random Thoughts...
JD – The bullseye is finally finding the correct target.
Wash – He’s been an unmitigated disaster.
The Players – Short on talent, shorter on baseball IQ.
Adam J. Morris – more worried about Hicks’ $ than Mrs. Hicks.

Bullseye on JD?
JD can be blamed for not building to date a ML team with the talent to be a contending ML team. But, a GMs job is a lot more than the ML team. He’s built a very high level of talent on the farm, and he’s put together what appears to be a really good scouting staff. The talent level of the ML team will rise dramatically over the next two years through promotions and trades. Do they have a manager that can do something with the talent?
I will try to find a link, but I very clearly remember that Wash’s preseason goal was an 84-win season. I don’t think anyone expected the Rangers to be contenders. The expectation was that the team would play hard every night and play sound defense. The reason Washington is here is that he is expected to keep the team’s attitude from becoming as negative as it was during Buck’s tenure, to avoid a dysfunctional communication pipeline from management to the players, and to instill solid defense and an offense with the ability to manufacture runs. With the exception of MY and maybe Broussard, the Rangers have players who have the ability to be average to above-average defenders.
JD probably gets another year or two to see what he can do with this bundle of talent in the minors. Wash probably gets a month or the All-Star break at most to show that the inability of the offense to manufacture runs and play defense is a slump rather than mismanagement and an inability to transfer his ideas through his coaches to his players.
Who
hired Wash?
JD should be fired for that decision alone.

really good scouting staff?
the guys that told him to shit can Galaragga and that B-Mac was a battle tested rotation workhorse?
I think the Rangers internal scouting has been a weakness for a long time and remains so presently.
Pedro: "I wasn't cockfighting, I just have a wide stance."
It isn't as if...
...having a high opinion of McCarthy is something peculiar to the Rangers. He was very highly regarded, both by the scouting types and the statheads.
He hasn’t been healthy. Maybe that’s something the scouts should have picked up on, that would happen, even though he’d never had any injury concerns before in his career. I don’t know.
by Adam J. Morris on Apr 27, 2008 11:33 AM CDT up reply actions
maybe the scouting types
could have picked up on the fact that he throws a 88 mph fastball that is straight as an arrow and he can’t locate any of his offspeed stuff. That plus the fact he has an incredibly awkward delivery. Or maybe those problems only cropped up when he got to Texas and Chicago just got really, really lucky by trading him before he became injured and sucky.
Pedro: "I wasn't cockfighting, I just have a wide stance."
Good grief
maybe the scouting types could have picked up on the fact that he throws a 88 mph fastball that is straight as an arrow and he can’t locate any of his offspeed stuff.
You are right. Clearly, he was obviously doing that while he was in the ChiSox organization, which is why he dominated in the minors and pitched well in the majors before coming here. It was with an 88 mph fastball and offspeed stuff he couldn’t locate. That’s why his walk totals have always been so low, and his K totals so high, before 2007.
Get a grip. Take off the blinders and don’t just assume that what you saw last year, when he pitched most of the season with a fractured shoulder blade, is what he’s always done. That’s simply stupid.
by Adam J. Morris on Apr 27, 2008 12:54 PM CDT up reply actions
I guess
you think that Chicago just got really, really lucky by trading away such a dominant pitcher with such nasty stuff when they did?
Pedro: "I wasn't cockfighting, I just have a wide stance."
I guess
you think his stuff has always been crap, and that he was bound to be worthless despite a stellar track record, and the Rangers were the only team that didn’t realize that?
McCarthy was the guy everyone wanted via trade from Chicago in 2006, when the ChiSox were trying to shore up their lineup, and Kenny Williams said he was untouchable. He only became untouchable when a couple of guys Williams got hot for - Masset and Danks - were offered up.

BP's player comments on McCarthy from their website
2007
This is the year Brandon McCarthy is supposed to break out. The White Sox traded Freddy Garcia to make room for McCarthy in their rotation, then dealt McCarthy to Texas where he`s being counted on to anchor the Rangers` starting five. Buyer beware: he`ll first need a cure for his gopheritis. McCarthy gave up 31 home runs per 650 plate appearances in 2006, the fifth-highest rate in the big leagues (minimum 70 IP). Worse yet, this does not appear to be an isolated problem. McCarthy`s home run rates were fairly high throughout his minor league career, as well as in his big league debut in 2005. The reason is that he pitches up in the zone fairly often, sometimes intentionally and sometimes not. McCarthy`s mechanics are reasonably well-regarded, but his tall, lanky frame can cause him to miss his landing point at times, resulting in flat, off-balance pitches. It`s possible that the problem can be resolved through mechanical adjustments—a job which falls to veteran pitching coach Mark Connor, just promoted from the Rangers` bullpen. PECOTA is probably too pessimistic, but, despite the hype, McCarthy`s not a sure-fire success, and his relocation to the Ballpark in Arlington casts even more doubt.
2006
It`s a wonder that McCarthy`s curveball didn`t get more praise as he was rocketing through the Sox`s system. It`s a scary enough pitch on its own, but all the more so when it comes from guy who stands 6` 7` and throws straight overhand. With his overall combination of repertoire and command, he sometimes resembles a mad scientist version of Roy Oswalt, with a few Kurt Rambis genes mixed in. Don`t worry about where he starts on the depth chart next year; he`s going to have a long and successful career.
2005
Ladies and gentlemen, your 2004 minor league strikeout leader. McCarthy is doing all those things scouts wish for: bulking up his 6’7” frame, adding velocity as he matures physically (into the low 90s), and perfecting a change-up to add to his curveball. Sensibly, the Sox recognized he’d proved enough this year, and held him back from the AFL. If there’s a worry, it’s that McCarthy’s been relatively hittable, both for base hits and home runs, in spite of his astounding strikeout and walk numbers. That could be indicative of a pitcher who is getting hitters out as a result of his prodigious feel for the craft, rather than his tremendous raw stuff. McCarthy should be a good one, but he might not find the going quite as easy at Triple-A as he’s come to expect.
by Adam J. Morris on Apr 27, 2008 2:21 PM CDT up reply actions
Am I missing something?
or do the 2007 comments sound pretty pessimistic.
Why did we expect success?
I'd rather be Blind, Crippled, & Crazy
From BA on McCarthy at the time of the trade
McCarthy works off a low-90s fastball that touches higher velocities, and while he’s gained 15 pounds since signing he still has some projection in his frame. His curveball and changeup are solid average major league pitches as well, with his change grading above-average at times.
by Adam J. Morris on Apr 27, 2008 1:00 PM CDT up reply actions
And if you recall BGR's posts on here
He admitted to not being able to throw his changeup much because his fastball got him behind often times (due to fractured shoulder blade, presumably) and that he had planned on throwing it a lot more this year. That is an excellent out pitch once he’s working off a 93 MPH fastball once again.
Tricer, this is one instance that I think you’re off base. He doesn’t turn 25 for a couple of months and deserves the time to establish himself, imo.

I realize
that he isn’t going to have an ERA under 3, and he probably will end up pitching out of the bullpen for most of his career. But he is a young pitcher with 2 good pitches and good control and it is just stupid that we give a guy like him away so we can fill the bullpen, in a supposed rebuilding year, full of spares like Franklyn German and Jamey Wright.
It’s just stupid, I said it at the time and I stick to it now, Galarraga is a much better pitcher than Mendoza. But the scouting department that JD put together didn’t see it that way.
Pedro: "I wasn't cockfighting, I just have a wide stance."
Good control?
He was erratic with his control in the minors, wasn’t he?

People who actually realize that there is a budget involved with the team are often seen as apologists for some reason. Guys like red shoe ranger think that because you base some of your roster opinions on reality instead of fantasy land then you are clearly a shill for Hicks. On the flip side, guys like him just think that Hicks should live in an efficiency apartment on Oak Cliff and spend every last penny he has on players

I was curious if you shill for any other companies and let their management off the hook because they “couldnt afford” to use qulity parts and therefore delivered to you, the end-user a shitty product.
I assure you I understand the budgetary/fiscal responsiblity argument when pursuing FA’s, etc. But at the end of the day I want you to deliver a solid (perhaps even great) product.
To continue to support a business that continually is one of the worst performers in its idustry is “fanatical”. Thats’ why I consider myself a “fan” of the Rangers.
And if your argument is that sports are different than business (I agree), then quit citing business (see $) reasons when The Rangers fail to sign FA’s (see Dice-K, Fukudome, etc,) keep up and coming players that have already “arrived”( see Teix), or draft players that might want a ML contract(see Porcello).
If you think sports are the same as business than I hope you would be intellectually honest enough to admit that you should quit being a Ranger fan the same way you would bail on a business that continually delivered shitty products.

by Adam J. Morris on Apr 27, 2008 12:51 PM CDT up reply actions
Wrong
You are making the mistake of oversimplification. You want to label baseball with a blanket definition without understanding the complexity and subtleties of it. The audience-team relationship is indeed that of a “fan”. If this was a business relationship, fans would only watch poor teams because of low ticket prices. On the other hand, the market of baseball (player salaries, advertising, market size, fan loyalty, and fan costs) is indeed a business. These two relationship can affect each other, but are inherently separate entities.
Yes, we do realize that the team performed poorly and demand better performance out of them. However, by demanding the management of a team to satisfy our whims (signing expensive FA for example) at all cost, you are trying to deny the reality of the baseball market. Pause for a moment to think about what you are saying: you are demanding the owner to spend large amounts of his own money (which he will lose). How do you expect people to stay in business while losing money, no matter how good it makes you feel?
Just because the fan-team relationship is not a business one does not mean the market operation of baseball is not a business. They are totally separate things.
I guess
I’ll console myself with the knowledge that Hicks is making money, year after year.
the problem with your argument, from a fans perspective, is that The Rangers never have to win for them to be a good business.
To restate my point: The Rangers dont have to win for Hicks to make money.
Is there a place I can check “the standings” of Hicks Holdings and “root” for him and his good “business”

It's unfortunately, but it's true
I was simply stating facts; I did not offer any arguments. It is a fact that a team does not have to win for them to be profitable. The Marlins has been the most profitable (in terms of annual profits) in the major league in the last few years.
However, an alternative to annual profits is to grow the value of the franchise. The Yankees has not had a year in the black for a while, but it is a more profitable franchise because the growth in the value of the franchise year after year, and the peripheral market that is generated by it. This kind of profit is sustainable, while the Marlin’s profit is at the mercy of the next owner’s agreement. The best way to grow the value of the franchise is through winning and building a good fan base.
As fans, it is not that important whether Hicks makes money or not (I hope he does make money). I want to see him put a good team on the field, but I can’t determine how he wants to run the business. The fact is that we will not be able to consistently sign players from the FA like the Yankees and Red Sox, which Hicks had tried to do earlier, and the only real way to be able to compete consistently is through players development. I do not complain because I think this is what they are doing right now (for the most part). If they turn around and trade someone like a Matt Harrison for some over-the-hill veteran, or if they go into the win-now mentality again without having the team to do it. Then I will be pissed.
George Bush
made a fortune and never produced a winner.
Unfortunately these franchises grow in value regardless of winning.

went to the game last night
sat about 6 rows back of Nolan and Hicks. Nolan was gone by the time the wheels came off but Hicks looked none too happy. I think he, like most of us, could handle the losses if we were going somewhere, but last night was pathetic. That is the type of game you get when a team is not fully focused on making plays, It was like little league.
My observations:
A. ponson looked good for the most part. The throwing error aside, he might have gone 7 or 8 with any little smidge of defense behind him, The abck to back fuckups bt Cat and Salty were bad, but he held it together and got out of the inning. Would definitely give him another stat or two. DFA Jennings if necessary. We have already seen what he doesn’t have.
B, DFA Broussard—seriously. what does this guy bring to the table? Admit the mistake and move on.
C. Cat’s new role—occasional PH, once in a while DH, trade bait… no significant playing time, can not play outfield
D. FOTF—-I don’t think they move him to a new position this year but for sure they need to be thinking where he goes next. Simply no longer has the range
E. Botts—-looked bad at the plate but still think he should get till the ASB to show what he can do
F. German—what is he doing on the 25 man? more importantly, what the hell was RW thinking inserting that guy into last nights game with Twins aplenty on the basepaths already. Of course you are going to get lit up pitching from 2-1 and 3-1 counts constantly. The fist pump when ge struck out the guy to end the inning after he fucked off the game made me want to vomit. Option him today
G. Wash..I wanted this to work but it is so obviously not doing so. I don’t see how he sees May. Ryan spoke recently about not further alienating the fanbase. Well I was sitting 12 feet from Hicks last night and the boos were so loud at times I thought Buechele was coming to the plate
The wheels are all the way off the bus here and I think there needs to be major housecleaning. Let’s get started. I drive 2 hours each way for the games. I need to see progress to justify that trip every week or two.
Wow

German's out of options
He would have to be exposed to waivers to get him to OKC.
Which wouldn’t be such a bad thing…
Ok...
I’m going to sound like a nut here, but he IS my favorite player on the team. Has been since he got here. And I think he’s much better defensively than all of you are giving him credit for. I think that maybe his time at SS is coming to a close, yes, but he’s not so bad that we need to get rid of him or that we need to solely DH him. He was pretty good defensively, actually, in ‘04-’06. Last year he started to show signs of a decline and it hasn’t been pretty so far this year, I’ll admit. But I think he’s still got the ability to make plays over there and to be a solid SS. But with Andrus ready to take that role next year (more than likely), I think MY does need to find a new position for his arrival. Might as well see what it is now.
My three favorite numbers: 10, 32, 36. =)

whether or not he ever arrives….thats why I would’nt make organizational decisions based on the premise that a 19yr old AA shortstopp will solve my SS problems for the next decade at the ML level. Maybe he will, maybe he wont. A good GM prepares for the “maybe he wont”.

We’ve got like 10 of those on the roster now, so it shouldn’t really bother us.
Michael is by no means...
a placeholder. The club signed him to a 5-year extension for a reason. But if there’s someone better at a certain position coming up through the ranks that can take that spot soon (yes, NEXT YEAR, I guarantee it), then the player in the position currently should be flexible enough to play another position when the player in question arrives. Mike was gracious enough to do it once, and I bet he would do it again if it were for the team’s best interests.
My three favorite numbers: 10, 32, 36. =)

Rangers poll...
On the team site. I have voted for defense everyday (and will contiue to do so until it beats out starting pitching). The offense should be the least of our worries, I still think this team will have a pretty good offense (once BB is gone, Laird is on the bench, etc.). Starting and Relief pitching are a concern as well though right now.

BOTTS is better
at first base then shelton or BB he won a gold glove in Mexico this winter and his only error this year was a questionable throw from J.Hamilton. He started off the year like 0 for 7 while pinch hiting, since then his OBP is in the mid .300’s and his hitting is around .200 which isn’t great but give it a chance. this whole thing wit salty and laird splitting time is again a terrible decision at this time. Laird is now starting to hit consistently hitting .390 over the last week. This is a prime time to let him get his avg. up and trade him HIGH. Now neither of them will be able to get into a rythym and again we will end up giving away G.Laird who IMO is a very good catcher. ONE MISTAKE AFTER ANOTHER! FFFFFFFFFFFF
Botts,
is neither better, at any position, or any player in the ML. Oak City, and the Mexican/Pacific league, MAYBE.
YOU obviously.....
haven’t been watching any games this year if you wouldn’ t rather have Botts out there than BB!

IF,
you would like to see him hurt, then continue to stick him at first.
They're both embarassing
But Broussard has been less so.
Neither man belongs on a major league roster.
M.Y.
Does anyone else think M.Y is best suited for a dh/utillity role someone whose bat is in the lineup everyday but could eventually play all four infield positions and given his arm strength probably the corner outfield spots?
I THINK M.Y. is
best suited in a Red Sox Jersey with Ellsbury and bucholz/lester in a Rangers Jersey!!

Blue Glove Lefty
Updated his blog yesterday afternoon, describing Friday night’s win
I can’t remember the last time I’ve been that happy at the end of a game…times like that really remind me how fun baseball can be when the team is going well- it’s really something to feed off of.
