Evan Grant on today's game:

Boy did this crowd, this team and this fan base need that.

Truer words have not been written.

This is the sort of game where usually you'd say, let Dustin Nippert or Josh Rupe or whomever at the end of the bullpen come in and pitch the 9th.

But I didn't figure there was any way that was happening today...even at 10-0, Washington was going to ride Padilla as long as he could, and then go to Joaquin Benoit or C.J. Wilson.

There was no way he was going to let some garbage-time runs come in and kill the enthusiasm and the buzz from this game.

Trade

If nothing else, I’m glad that he’s doing so well to increase his eventual trade value later this summer.

Fortunately

Padilla didn’t give RW the opportunity to let Francisco, Rupe or anyone else “kill the enthusiasm and the buzz from this game.”

We will not see...

a better game this year.

Botts, Hamslam, and Board Game all go yard.

MY and Hamslam with 3 hits a piece.

No errors on D.

And of course a CG shutout for Padilla who pitched very well.

I may have to keep this game on my DVR and re-watch it whenever the Rangers lay another stink-bomb like yesterday’s game.

Agree...awesome game

I wholeheartedly believe that Padilla’s complete game was greatly influenced by Nolan Ryan’s recent mandate for the pitchers to “grow some”. Previously, he’d have been pulled.
That’s the kind of move that could put some attitude back into the pitchers.
The new era begins…

Actually Padilla...

has now thrown at least 108 pitches in 4 of 6 starts this year.

I think the fact that Padilla and Millwood are being left in there longer has a lot more to do with them coming into this year ready to pitch and in shape.

I don’t see Figurehead having anything to do with it.

If you don't want to see it, that's OK with me.

“Obviously, he’s got strong feelings about pitching,” Rangers general manager Jon Daniels says, “and we were able to incorporate some of the things Nolan did into our farm system. We’ve encouraged a lot of our [minor league] managers and pitching coaches that they have the flexibility to let their pitchers go past 100 pitches.

Nolan schooled JD, JD got the message, and it was sent to Wash.
Who cares if you think Nolan is a Figurehead. JD certainly doesn’t.

Unfortunately

I apologize for my pessimism, but I feel like I have heard this song a thousand times out of the Texas Rangers. When pending change is near, they always seem to do just enough to perpetuate the status quo. And the status quo for the Rangers over the past several years has been less than acceptable. Unfortunatley, I think todays win may have done just enough to save Washington or Daniel’s job for another month or so. Unfortunately, I just don’t think Washington was ready to handle an entire MLB roster and his poor roster decisions have proven such. With Danks, Young and Volquez performing at a higher level than 90% of the Ranger pitching staff, I can’t see how Hicks can justify keeping him on the payroll for anything more than a restroom attendant assigned to clean up all the dung in the ballpark banos. He’s certainly done his job in ensuring a thick load of dung has been on display in the ballpark since taking over. Let’s hand the reigns to Nolan Ryan and see who he can bring in here to manage this team. It’s obvious that Daniels has no idea what he is doing which has been abundantly evidenced by a poor managerial choice, horrendous trades and ridiculous off-season signings. Also, way to go on the Fukumori signing, vomit!

Ooops, by "him" I was referring to Daniels, not Washington.

Fair enough

Good point…I fully admit that I am a frustrated Rangers fan right now. As is typical of our Rangers, we have a batting line-up that is ready for a post-season success, but a pitching staff that consistently has us 10-15 games out of first well before the All-Star break. Before Daniels took over the Rangers had a nice group of young pitchers that were destined to succeed in the MLB. Unfortunately, most of those young starts are succeeding else where.

Doug Melvin

Melvin was genious and the last time this team was in competition for the post-season it was done with a system and team built by the great D. Melvin. Take a look at what he’s done with a small market team like the Brewers who barely spend a dime.

by Waxahachie on Apr 27, 2008 7:20 PM CDT up reply actions

Brewers payroll

$81 million this season. Barely spending a dime?

Also, Melvin didn’t build the playoff teams of the late 90s.

Doug Melvin's first 5 years in Milwaukee

56-106

Of course, JD doesn’t deserve any time to build the franchise because he’s one of those young whippersnappers that never played the game and yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawn.

But he was here so you have to recognize what he did when he was here.

I liked Melvin also but last year was his best with the Brewers. Thing is JD has done a good job building up the minors. When the time comes and those prospects get here you will have to give JD some credit.

So do I

But how can you possibly say “Before Daniels took over the Rangers had a nice group of young pitchers that were destined to succeed in the MLB” when you don’t recognize a 5 year period in the franchise. None of the young pitchers we have traded away and have had success elsewhere were Doug Melvin picks or that Melvin traded for so your statement makes no sense. Also Melvin wasn’t exactly great developing pitchers in his own right. All his great young players that he developed were positional prospects. Same as in Milwaukee which as has been pointed out were all there before Melvin took over

Destined to succeed?

Really? Chris Young looked like he was destined to succeed? John Danks looked like he was destined to succeed? Volquez looked like he was destined to succeed? No none of them looked like they were destined to succeed. Danks looked like the best of the bunch and even then he looked and still looks like no more than a serviceable middle rotation guy. Volquez looked great running to back up home plate after another RBI base hit he gave up.

by bigsteve on Apr 27, 2008 7:23 PM CDT up reply actions

Young, Danks...your kidding right???

Are you kidding me? do you not remember the last season Young spent in a Ranger uniform? And as for Danks: 1) you never trade a lefty for a righty unless the righty is significantly better than said lefty and 2) you certainly never trade a righty prone to injury for a prospective lefty who had never previously succumbe to significant injury. I might give you Volquez, but I won’t argue that as I am happy to have Hamilton here in Texas, just wish we didn’t have to give up one of our young pitching prospects for him.

by Waxahachie on Apr 27, 2008 7:29 PM CDT up reply actions

by boomer1 on Apr 27, 2008 7:33 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah I do actually

And it was nothing special. Take off your blinders and realize he pitches in the best pitchers park in the majors and in the National League. He wore down toward the end of the year here and has now shown he does that in San Diego. People got their panties in a wad because he was a Dallas kid who grew up here. Wow thats great by that same token people should be in love with Jason Jennings. But they aren’t. Had Eaton not gotten hurt and put up a full year like his half year was and people wouldn’t have been so upset.

Now as for Danks I know BMac is hurt now but he was not injury prone before last year. Thats a fact. And he was significantly better than Danks. Go look at the numbers. Had McCarthy come up through our system and had the exact same numbers he would have been viewed as a savior. In fact of the three guys, McCarthy Hurley and Danks, Danks had the worst numbers. Hurley has had better numbers in the minors, before this year of course, than Danks did. Look at the hype he has created. McCarthy was better than that. Get your facts straight

i generally agree with you

but i tihnk you have to give credit to danks and young. at least young has shown that he is a good pitcher, irrespective of park, league, and backup defense. The thing about those guys was that there was no consensus that young was going to turn into a star and there was no consensus that danks was going to be better than Bmac. As it stand now, both of those things might come true but there was no guarantee at the time. Since those trades, both players have taken steps forward developmentally.

Young's success

Young pitched above average here as a rookie in park that usually ate young pitchers alive.

Although he wasn’t Cy Young, he was definitely someone that you saw pitch and knew we needed to keep on the team.

a lot of people here were not all that impressed with young

well at least in the ranger community accross several boards. of course we liked him, but i dont tihnk the general opinion was that he would be an ace or anything.

at the time it seemed like smoke and mirrors a bit. he had a questionable minor league career, he didnt have great secondary pitches and his fastball was 90 mph….

turns out (helped by the park or not) he really was that good.

oh well. i thought the trade was terrible at the time, but because of the return not because I thought we were giving up an ace.

I took my sons for the first time and everybody had a blast. Josh Hamilton’s home run was magnificent. It looked like a pop up coming off of the bat and just kept going and going. First game attended of the year

Some interesting notes:

1) between innings one time, a kid in the whiffleball park hit a homer, setting off the fireworks. Delwyn Young was warming up in left field at the time and nearly crapped himself.

2) When did they stop playing “Hit the Road, Jack” when an opposing pitcher is pulled? Sunday would have been the perfect day for it. Livan was pwned!

3) Botts looked pretty good in LF. Made one catch near the warning track at the line and then the next between the CF and SS in very short Left-center.

4) Section 11 Row 14 rocks for seats!!!!

5) 60 degrees in the afternoon is VERY comfortable.
