Bradley extension?
Well, this year is pretty much out the window, but say that Bradley continues to play well and has a productive season. Is he the type of guy you would want resigned to be part of the future? Granted, he's not a spring chicken, but at some point, the Rangers are going to need to have a few veterns around when the youngsters come up. I just think at some point you need to sign some productive players rather than just pawn everyone off at the trading deadline. Don't get me wrong, I am all for not signing veterns at huge prices at this point, but we are going to need a few vets around here for the "Glory of '09" and maybe Bradley is a good piece that wouldn't be cost prohibitive.

Absolutely
As long as he’s healthy, I’d sign him to a 3 year deal at the end of the season.

No
If he’s having a very good year, I trade him for more prospects at the deadline.

No way
If he, by the grace of God, stays healthy all year, he will have a very nice season. At that point, some moronic team will pay somewhere between GMJ and T. Hunter money to bring him in on a 3+ year deal. That would be a huge mistake, imo. He is a very nice player and the type player that you spend money on, but not with his injury history. In eight seasons in the big leagues, he has accrued more than 500 plate appearances one time.
Bradley was a great one-year deal, but is fool’s gold as a long term FA. I say you either flip him at the deadline or maybe he gets you draft compensation if he has a big year.

My approach
JD: “Hey Milton, we’d love for you to come help us suck again next year. We think you’re the key cog in the run for 3rd place in the West. What do you think? Sign here, please.”
Milton: “Sounds wonderful”
JD: “Yeah, my mom says I can sell anything.”

If Wash gets fired this season will Bradley still have the same interest in staying here?
If he does I would want to extend him instead of trading him for prospects.

Exactly
I don’t think Bradley will come back here once Wash is gone.
If we could, resigning Bradley to a 1-2 year deal would be okay, I guess… but anything more than that would be stupid, with his injury history.
I think I might rather flip him at the deadline if we get a good offer, anyway.

trade him for prospects
and then resign him in the offseason if he represents good value.

Sounds like your best plan.
I love Bradley as a one year pickup, I hate him on a long term contract.

My thoughts exactly
the free agent market does not look very good, but I hesitate to sign him long term unless it’s team friendly and incentive laden.

How many times does this plan ever work?
Trades may be just part of the business of baseball, but they don’t often seem to be conducive to fostering a long-term relationship.

But it's probably a better risk to take
than signing such an injury risk long term.

Flip him...
he’s a great player, but I don’t think he can stay healthy for a 2/3 year period.

He has the type of skills the Rangers should value...
...OBP, marginal power, maybe the ability to play all 3 OF spots if he gets back to 100% physically, so they should look into an extension if the right trade deal doesn’t present itself at the deadline.
Of course I said they SHOULD value his skills. I’m not convinced that they will.
If they can sign him to a 3 year extension without overpaying him I would think that was a good move.
Right around the time all the young talent is ready to contend is when the organization will realize that Ron Washington is the wrong man for the job.

Marginal power?
He has slugged over .500 twice in his career over extended samples—hardly marginal.
In fact, since he bats mostly left (most pitchers being RHP), I think you could argue that his power becomes elite in RBiA, with that short porch.

Perhaps I should have said "good" power...
...what I meant to convey is that he probably won’t be a huge home run hitter, at least not in the 35-40 homer range.
Certainly he will have more than sufficient power for a COF, especially when combined with his superior OBP skills.

You mean just like cheaper non-nutcase Brandon Boggs?

Boggs is good, I like him a lot
But I really doubt he will ever be as good offensively as Milton Bradley. If he is, he will be one of the biggest sleeper stories of the Ranger farm system ever.

If you think...
Brandon Boggs can put up Borad Games #’s then you are going to be very disappointed.
I like Boggs, maybe more than most, but I don’t think he will ever hit like Milton can.

I'd be down with offering him an extension
right now.
I’ve always had mad love for Madman Milt.
But offering him a lot of years scares me. I’d offer him a two years, 20-22mil extension for 2009 and 2010, with some sort of vesting option for a third year at 12-14mil if gets enough PA’s.
And if he declines it, saying he either wants more guaranteed years or he wants to test FA at the end of the year, then I deal him for prospects at the deadline. Milt can flat hit. Somebody will pony up for him in July if he’s healthy.

Even that amount of time scares me
Considering all the roster snafus this organization has had I don’t think it’s a good idea to have anyone that injury prone taking up a spot on the 40.

Oh no you dih-ent!!!
We’re seriously at the point where we’re saying that reason we shouldn’t sign guys long term is cause they’ll take up a spot on the 40??!
I’m gonna have to start replying to every message with “The 40 tumps all!!!” again, aren’t I?

I'm just saying
perhaps I put that too strongly. But I do think than any Bradley deal needs to be based on PAs and incentives considering his history. And, you can only have so many of that kind of player on your 40-man roster. Not a good idea, for instance, to sign both Bradley and Nick Johnson along with a couple of one-year oldsters you hope to deal in summer. Too many breakable parts. Daniels takes chances (which I like) but there is a line. Bradley staying would have to fit with other moves.
