Blalock Out 3-4 Weeks
Well, this isn't good:
Hank Blalock, who injured his left hamstring legging out a double Friday night, is expected to be placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday. Blalock had an MRI Monday morning, which revealed a small tear. He could miss between three and four weeks. The initial plan while Blalock was hurt was to platoon Ramon Vazquez and German Duran at third. Blalock is hitting .299 with three home runs and seven RBI.

question
For those of you who understand the Rangers 40 man roster better than me, does this open up a spot to bring up an outfielder and let Duran play the infield? If so, would it make sense to bring up Cruz and give him one more chance to see if he can hit big league pitching? If a few weeks from now he still can’t hit, DFA him, maybe for good.

No...
A spot on the 40-man roster is only opened up when a player is added to the 60 day DL and if Hank is out only 3-4 weeks, they won’t do that. At this point they could probably add Travis Metcalf to the 60-day DL which would open a spot, but that would only cause issues when he came off in a few weeks.
Isn’t Brandon Boggs on the 40-man? That would make the most sense to call if up if he is…

Wasn't Metcalf
already moved to the 60?

I'm pretty sure he's not...
Jeff and I were talking about that when they moved Diamond to the 60-day and I’m pretty sure they hadn’t move Travis at that time. When is Marlon going to be ready to come off the DL? Couldn’t he just take Hank’s spot and then they’d leave German up until Hank comes off the DL…

One other thing...
If you call up Nelson and then DFA him a few weeks later he’ll have the right to refuse an assignment to OKC and become a free agent since it will be his 2nd time being DFA’d. Don’t think it’s worth it for 3-4 weeks, especially when they have an OF who is already on the 40-man.

Boggs...
isn’t on the 40 yet.

Well, according to
Scott Lucas he is. He is a little behind (Melhuse) but I think Boggs was added last fall.

Yeah...
he’s probably right.
I was just going off of the team site, which is probably not accurate. I must have missed him being added on last fall.

Yep
he had to be protected, remember?
If he hadn’t exploded in Frisco when he did, we may not be having this discussion.

for some reason

Yes he is...
He’s apparently a pitcher though! Pretty sad when the Rangers do it to themselves…

Only if Blalock goes on the 60-day DL
When a player is put on the 15-day DL, that only clears a spot on the 25 man roster. When a guy goes on the 60 though, then you can put someone on the 40-man in his stead for those 60 days.
Blalock’s not going on the 60 though, since he should be back in 3-4 weeks, so it’s kind of a moot point.

Cruz
Cruz isn’t on the 40 so I don’t know but anyway…just bring up Boggs

Another injury or two
and RW is going to be able to keep his job until Oct. You can’t blame him for the injuries.

if vasquez isnt starting on 3rd
he should be DFA’d, stuff like this coming up is the only reason he’s here. if he cant fill the role, he has none.

He's the UT guy
He plays all four IF positions, that’s his role. I don’t see any reason for him to get the majority of the plaing time at third while Hank is gone though – he’s got nothing to prove, and we have nothing to gain from giving him more AB’s.
German Duran should get the playing time at third base – he shouldn’t be sitting on the bench so much, he was a full-time player in OKC. If he’s not the one playing the majority of the time at 3B while Hank’s gone, then he shouldn’t have been called up.

Wash will
probably platoon Duran and Vazquez like he did with Metcalf and Vazquez last year. That means inconsistent playing time for Duran. Maybe JD will step in and “suggest” to RW that Duran needs the bulk of the playing time.
I am actually thinking they may call up Arias. Just a feeling. However, I would rather see Boggs get called up.

Isn't Arias
Still unable to throw at full strength?
If they do call him up, though, I would like to see them play Arias at SS, and temporaily move Mike Young over to third base, and have him learn the position until Blalock gets back.

Arias...
is on the 40, but I don’t think he’s healthy enough to come up right now.

He's not...
Even from second base his arm is no where near as strong as it usually is…

He doesn't
have the arm strength to play that side of the infield yet.

Yeah, that's what I thought
But you could still play Vazquez at SS. If Ron’s really gonna play him over Duran, I’d rather see it be at SS, with Young trying out third base.

MY...
isn’t going to switch positions in the middle of the year.
And Vasquez isn’t really a upgrade at SS over MY.

I'm not saying he is
But he could at least spend some time at the position, and familarize himself with it.

RW to MY
RW: Mike, how’s the calf. How about taking IF practice over at 3B?
MY: Why?
RW: It will be easier on your sore calf.
MY: My calf is fine.
Frank Robinson: Young, your playing 3B tonight.
MY: OK.
