Tuesday morning things
Not a lot going on this morning, after a rare off day. Hank Blalock's DL stay is being projected at about 3-4 weeks, and it does appear that Brandon Boggs will get the call to fill in. Boggs doesn't have a HR this season and isn't the best statistical candidate, but the Rangers are somewhat backed into the corner on this one.
Anthony Andro of the Star-Telegram reviews another poor April, focusing on the errors and poor performance offensively with runners on base.

Boggs / Duran
I think it is slightly premature to have them both up, but as you say, they were backed into the corner.
However, now that they’re up, I’d prefer to keep Duran over Vasquez and Boggs over Byrd. This is a lost year and a great time to see what they have.

Backed into a corner
I don’t really understand.
I don’t get why Blalock’s injury, considering Duran and Vazquez are both on the 25, forces Boggs promotion.
Boggs is basically up to replace Byrd, right? And he’s been down awhile…
Go Strangers.

What other infielder
would you call up? The point in calling up Boggs is to avoid another 40-man roster move. Duran can serve as a second utility infielder while Boggs takes over Byrd’s role for a while. If they need Duran to be available more for infield play, then having another outfielder (or another body, period) active makes sense.
As for keeping Duran and Boggs on the roster, Chase? No, I’d rather see both go back to OKC and play every day for a couple more months at least.

That would be ideal
but it looks like they could be sticking around for a little while, and if so, would you send them back down when Blalock and Byrd return?

yes absolutely
Although if Duran shows he can handle himself at the plate and in the field while Blalock is down I could see the scenario where Vazquez is DFAd and Duran turns into our utility guy. But I think that is a very very slim possibility

Yes
Duran is not projected to be the next 3B, so I don’t see the point in having him takeover full-time when Blalock is once again healthy. If ever an IF needs a day off, I’d much rather see Duran get the AB. However, he should get as many AB’s as possible, so keeping him on the 25 man roster after Blalock returns may not be the best idea. I can’t really see Kinsler, Young, and Blalock rotating in and out of the starting lineup just so Duran can get some AB’s.
Byrd has not done much to impress me, so I have no problem seeing Boggs take his AB’s. Like Duran, however, it might be best to give Boggs as many AB’s as possible, so going back to the minors probably would be best for now.

As I have said before I think if it was possible the Rangers would much rather promote Mench during this time and let Boggs continue to play everyday. Lost season or not these young guys need to be ready before throwing them in the fire. Boggs has 3 weeks of experience above AA. Duran had like a week. But now that they are up I would like to see them play. Looks like Boggs will platoon with Cat although Cat has been on a hot streak lately so it will probably be only against lefties and as a defensive replacement late in games. I would like to see Duran play full time at 3B with hank down and let Vazquez continue to be the true utility guy.

I'm really surprised he's starting.
I thought they’d put him in the bullpen and move Castillo to the rotation.

This season
Last year, there were so many statistics to point directly to that told the story of why they were so bad. Young, Teix, Blalock, Cat, Millwood, Padilla and others all got off to awful starts and thus the record showed that.
This season, Kinsler, Young, Hamilton, Bradley, Blalock and Murphy have all swung the bats pretty well. Millwood, Padilla and Gabbard (when healthy) have all thrown the ball well.
Every guy that you really needed to get off to a hot start, has gotten off to a hot start. Yet, you haven’t hit with runners in scoring position, have played really poor defensively and the bullpen (the strong point of last season’s team ) has reversed course and you have an even worse record this April.
I hate baseball.

....though i gotta agree w/ you… as well as some of these guys are playing it makes you wonder how much worse it would be if the starters had started out like shyte and no one was getting on base…

You know...
the team’s batting average with RISP won’t stay that low forever. It just doesn’t make sense for the team to have such a high overall batting average, but hit so poorly with RISP.
Surely our defensive woes won’t last all year long.
The bullpen’s WHIP is just ridiculous this year. CJ is the only one with a WHIP below 1.4 (CJ’s at 0.9, and Rupe’s in second with a 1.46). Benoit bewilders me—I thought he finally figured it out last year. I think Feldman, Rupe, Wright, and Littleton will lower their stats as the year progresses.
by jwiscarson on Apr 29, 2008 1:53 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
RISP
Yeah, the only team hitting worse than the Rangers with RISP is Toronto. The Rangers are still well below the league average for this category, but there are a few things to suggest that this will change. Their line drive percentage is 19%, which is the league average. The team with the highest line drive percentage is Boston with 21%, so the difference between the two is not all that great. BABIP for the Rangers is .309, the second highest in the AL (Boston = .327). I’d hate to say that this team has just been unlucky (pretty weak excuse), but there is no reason why they should continue to hit this bad.

they just have good years every now and then. I think Benoit is your typical reliever. He will look good at times, he will frustrate the hell out of you at times.

came in out of shape (shame on him) had zero velocity, and I think the team is suffering for that.
He has always had issues with his confidence and being out of shape probably compounds the problem.

I just think
the terms “reliable” and “reliever” rarely go together in baseball. Guys with reliable arms tend to become starters or closers. Almost everyone else seems to be a crapshoot year to year.

They linked to it over at Royals Review
http://www.kansascity.com/sports/royals/story/596110.html
Apparently some Ticket sports talk show guy harrassed Alex Gordon’s and Luke Hochevar’s wives. To the point where the team is going to make sure that Gordon doesn’t get anywhere near these reporters, whoever they are.

That was the Hardline
Corby was interviewing people like he normally does. They were playing drops that the women couldn’t hear. Some Royals PR guy saw the interview, and went on the Ticket’s website to get the recording. Alex Gordon got pissed because he’s apparently very protective of his wife.

It was the Corby to her face….big difference.
But, yes I’d probably be upset about it too…I wasn’t making excuses for them, I was just explaining what happened.
by Dirk Diggler on Apr 29, 2008 2:27 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
It wasn't that big of a deal
It was a Reiner drop when she didn’t have any idea who Yoko Ono was and she couldn’t hear it. It was a Dallas radio station interviewing a girl from Nebraska in Arizona. If they would have left it alone, it wouldn’t have been a big deal at all. The only reason that anyone she knows has heard it, is because of the big deal they made it out to be.
I can see why if you had no idea what the ticket was about and heard that isolated sound bite, how it would upset you, but in the full context of everything, it was completely harmless. It was like a seven minute interview that was friendly and upbeat.
Gordon’s a douche if he is really worked up about that.

Heh
I’m not married, but I was just thinking about how ballistic my Dad would’ve gotten if someone had called my Mom a stupid bitch on the radio like that… shit, how crazy I’d have gotten if someone had done that to my Mom.
I don’t listen to the radio, so I don’t know the lingo, but I assume a “drop” is when you’re talking and one of the parties can’t hear you, cause iirc that’s what was going in the interview. One guy was interviewing her and one guy that she couldn’t hear was laughing at her from back in a studio somewhere and calling her a stupid bitch.
It’s not like it’s a mega-huge deal that we should all be super concerned about or anything, but I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that a reasonable, non-douchey man could be offended by that happening to a girl he cares about.

drop
No a drop is a recorded segment of sound, usually a funny phrase or something, that the guy running the boards will “drop” into a conversation. The drop referenced is one used quite a bit on The Ticket and if you listen to the station have probably heard it hundreds of times. In the interview the lady couldn’t hear not only Mike and Danny back at the booth but she also couldn’t hear the drops being played. I fully understand if a KC person just heard that one interview and didn’t know the context behind the entire station but it was harmless. In fact Corby didn’t even know if was Gordons wife until after it happened. He was just scoping out hot chicks in the stands and picked her.
by bigsteve on Apr 29, 2008 4:35 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Harmless?
Using a drop like that, regardless if she could hear it, comes off as misogynistic, sexist and demeaning to women. I realize the ticket is schtick based and geared towards the stereotypical hetero male, but that doesn’t excuse them or shelter them from the consequences of their actions.
Calling a player’s wife a stupid bitch, regardless of its comedic intentions, regardless of the format, is still insulting to some. If I were Gordon, I would be upset about it as well. I guess that makes me a douche.
by jparks77 on Apr 29, 2008 5:23 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Alright fine
But Gordon should realize who he needs to be angry with. Its not Mike or Corby or Danny. They were in Suprise and had no control over the drop being played. That was the board op Grubes.
by bigsteve on Apr 29, 2008 5:29 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
The station
uses drops constantly, and the idea for using them sure as hell didn’t originate with the guy pushing the button. He is expected to do that, it’s part of his job. The entire station is culpable, it is what they do. That’s like saying, hey, Bud Selig and the rest of the MLB management didn’t use steroids.
...and curse Sir Walter Raleigh, he was such a stupid git.
by t ball on Apr 29, 2008 6:52 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I understand that
But to threaten Corby or Mike when it was a guy hundreds of miles away playing the drop is childish. Shows a lack of maturity. Personally I don’t think what happened was all that bad. Taken in context its not that big a deal. If poor Alex Gordon gets his feeling hurt well he’s gonna have a hard life playing for KC
by bigsteve on Apr 29, 2008 6:58 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Context
It’s not like he was interviewing her and when she said she didn’t know who Yoko Ono was, he said to her “Well, you are a stupid bitch, then.” Its entertainment radio and they were joking around with the girls. The girls were laughing at themselves for not knowing who she was. There was no malice intended and if you listen to the entire interview, that is clear.
And yes, if you were in his position and someone in Dallas hit a button that called your wife a stupid bitch, jokingly, in Arizona in a random interview in which they didn’t even know who she was when the interview started and that really pisses you off, then yes, you are a douche.
by badradiorules on Apr 29, 2008 6:40 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
your last paragraph is completely incorrect
if someone called you a stupid bitch, maybe. you stick up for your wife and your mother. i don’t know about the threatening violence, but I’d be pissed as hell if anybody used that kind of language or even suggested that my wife was dumb.
i listen to lots of radio shows that have drops like that (just not the ticket in particular) and when they do use them, i don’t think those DJ’s feel like they can go to the woman’s husband and be cool about it. they know that they’ve probably pissed of the woman’s husband they just don’t care.
so, if the ticket DJ’s just showed that they don’t care, whatever. but if they expect to skate because “that’s their schtick,” they’ve been living in their bubble too long.

I guess I'm in the minority
I just don’t see it as a big deal. If Corby, Mike or Danny would have have actually called her a stupid bitch, that would have been an entirely different thing. That’s not even close to what happened. There was absolutely no malice involved. If there was, maybe I would feel differently about it as well.
There are some radio shows across the country that do those types of things and they really mean it. They do make me angry when I don’t even know the people involved. This case was very lighthearted.
