The ulnar nerve

Runs between the shoulder and the hand, and, per THT’s Chris Neault, “supplies the finger flexors of the 4th and 5th fingers.”

Matt Garza of the Rays went down on April 8th with ulnar nerve irritation, and was activated April 25th. Could keep him out just a couple weeks, but if it lingers, we’re not going to see Jennings for a while.

by jamcadbury on Apr 29, 2008 9:00 PM CDT up reply actions

From what I gather

If he somehow pinched the nerve, it could require surgery.

re: Beavan’s mechanics – they said that they noticed he drops his arm angle a tad on his slider as advertised
otherwise didn’t say much else

by shroomer on Apr 29, 2008 8:58 PM CDT reply actions

Gracias

Hopefully he can repeat that arm angle without putting stress on his elbow. A three quarter arm angle on a slider could be a very tough pitch against righties.

If his change develops, he could move pretty fast. I’d love to see him throw the vulcan grip.

by jparks77 on Apr 29, 2008 9:05 PM CDT up reply actions

Eh...

Vulcan grip=major arm stress. IDK about that.

—What up, JP?—:)

...it's the weekend, so why the hell not?

by Rodney on Apr 29, 2008 9:13 PM CDT up reply actions

The vulcan

I know that it could put unwanted stress on the arm but I loves me some splitter action. I think Beavan could be devastating with a plus change to go along with his plus fastball and the best slider Beavan has ever seen.

Not much going on here in NYC. Same old. U?

by jparks77 on Apr 29, 2008 9:18 PM CDT up reply actions

Yep

same old. Life is good!

I thought you were moving back southy way.

BB throws a wicked slider, which can be hell on the arm. I don’t think I would want him to add another arm-wrecker of a pitch to his arsenal.

Ok quick hypothetical here. IF Jennings injury is more sever than a simple 15 day stint and he goes down for a couple months or more. And if Hurley has a good start for OKC tonight what are the chances Hurley gets brought up? by coolaid on Apr 29, 2008 9:53 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm not trying to say he's a gold glover

I’m just saying, the perception on LSB that Salty blows at defense was wrong.

Geez, you guys are something.

You do realize, you’re actually the ones acting even more self-rightious than me when you make statements like that?

by LSJ on Apr 29, 2008 9:54 PM CDT up reply actions

Forgive me if I am wrong

But the opinion was not that his defense blows. It was that Lairds, specifically his throwing, was better. Not just a little but a lot better. The vast majority agreed that it would be best for him to go down and work on his defense in AAA. Its obvious he wouldn’t have ever made it to the big leagues as a catcher if his defense was terrible. But it needed work.

by bigsteve on Apr 29, 2008 9:57 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah

The perception was that his defense was so bad, he could not work on in the majros. Which, as it turned out, was wrong. Salty has been playing ML-servicable defense the entire season.

It’s not like defense is any easier in AAA, you know.

by LSJ on Apr 29, 2008 10:03 PM CDT up reply actions

No

In the majors you don’t get time to work on stuff like that. The minors is a developmental league. Thats the whole point of it.

by bigsteve on Apr 29, 2008 10:05 PM CDT up reply actions

Whatever

Try telling that to the Marlins or the Orioles – who, BTW, are performing very well in what are supposed to be developmental years.

I find it funny that the Rangers chose to throw out a bunch of spares because their young guys weren’t “ready” and yet they suck, the the O’s and Fish throw out the kids, and they’re winning.

by LSJ on Apr 29, 2008 10:14 PM CDT up reply actions

Not the same

Baltimores and Floridas kids were ready. Is Florida playing Cameron Maybin? No because he isn’t ready. Our kids aren’t ready. They will be hopefully by the end of the year but they aren’t right now.

by bigsteve on Apr 29, 2008 10:19 PM CDT up reply actions

My point is

Salty was ready. But you can’t seem to get a grasp on that.

by LSJ on Apr 29, 2008 10:21 PM CDT up reply actions

Ok

And he spent what 3 weeks in the minors. Laird isn’t exactly a 35 year old aging veteran. If we didn’t have the stable of catching prospects we have we would be looking to lock him up long term since he is still fairly young. Your argument would have some legs if we had waited until June to bring Salty up but its still April man.

Then Scherzer held out all year and almost ended up going back into the draft in ‘07, so his name was a popular topic of discussion before the ‘07 draft as well.

Jennings -

If the Rangers don’t make a comeback, they’ll be 0-6 in the games Jennings has started.

9-12 in the rest of the games.

Jason Jennings and Ben Broussard

I think those two are going to rank among the most worthless offseason accqusitions by the Rangers ever once the season is over.

has he really started six games or am I just subconsciously blocking a few of them?

He can only throw it for strike when it looks like a high fastball

And he is a two-pitch pitcher. Given enough look, I think hitters can figure him out, especially when he doesn’t throw high fastballs

Some positives

At least there were some positives from this game.

1. I don’t think we made an error
2. Jennings got hurt
3. Boggs got a couple of knocks
4. Cat might have got hurt

When a throwing error was made with nobody out in the bottom of the ninth.

Of course, that’s not working out so well tonight.

You know what I find amazing

In the first inning, Ron had two real shitball calls to argue – the one at the plate, and the one regarding Kinsler – and he still didn’t get himself ejected.

by LSJ on Apr 29, 2008 10:56 PM CDT up reply actions

He could have gotten an early exit

and maybe fired this team up. Hell, everyone wants off work on their birthday.

In my opinion

If one of your players gets ejected over shitty call like Kinsler, the manager needs to back him up, and get ejected as well.

It’s called protecting your players – apparently, Ron has never heard of it, though.

I've had it with Jennings...

I don’t want anyone to get hurt, but that may be the only way he doesn’t get the ball every 5th day with B-Mac, Mendoza, and Gabbard all hurt. Felman or Mathis should get his spot in the rotation and JJ should join the Mekhuse train out of town.

I think the only reason the Royals won this game (besides Jennings) is Hillman. Man he is such a great manger, he is so much better than Wash. I mean he used to was George Brett’s jock for crying out loud. How did he not get the Rangers job? He must not have put that on his resume.

This is not a good game to be apologizing for Wash

Not only did he fail to protect Ian Kinsler in the first inning, he missed yet another chance to fire up this team and show he gives a damn about his players.

As I said above, whenever one of your players gets tossed like that, the manager should get himself tossed too.

Oh, and then there’s the little matter of Ron bunting with German Duran in the 4th inning and nobody out, when we’re down by 5 runs. That is so fucking moronic, it’s not even funny.

Sorry, SLC, but if you’re gonna try to defend Wash, you’d better pick a different game.

That's funny...

you telling me to pick a different game with your extensive knowledge of baseball.

Once again I was not defending Wash. I was being sarcastic for the Hillman lovers on LSB. I didn’t agree with the bunt call with Duran.

As far as Wash getting tossed who cares if he does or not. I’m not a big fan of thinking the manager should get tossed to “fire” up his players, that’s a fairy tale to me.
