Mavs show their softness - make excuses
So they're already making really bad excuses that have nothing to do with basketball. That's the talk of losers, plain and simple. They have to blow this thing up now. There's not a leader on the whole team. Dirk's great and all, but he's not a leader, and he needs to stop someone on defense sometime. I personally don't want to see any returnees except Wright and Bass.Dirk didn't hesitate when asked whether the off-court drama took a toll on the Mavs during this series.
"Yeah," Dirk said. "Obviously, very disappointing what happened in the playoffs -- bad timing. I think in the playoffs it's really time to focus on basketball and not let distractions come up. So I'm very, very disappointed with the timing of the whole thing, but I still try to keep them all together, try to make everybody play as hard as they can. But it wasn't good enough."
Dirk didn't name names, but it was pretty clear he was talking about Josh Howard's strange decision to discuss his tendency to "partake in smoking weed in the off-season sometimes" on the radio the afternoon of Game 3.
At least one teammate thinks Howard's pot confession might have made the Mavs off-season come a little earlier.

More...Dirk on the Kidd trade
“Honestly, things didn’t look great before the trade,” forward Dirk Nowitzki said. “As a franchise, we went for it, and it didn’t pan out the way we wanted.
Wow. I thought they looked better before the trade than after. What does he say now about the team. Things didn’t look great? I know as a player you have a perspective on everything, but you don’t want to hear your so-called leader say that. You want to hear him say that the team was really great, but they saw an opportunity to get better.

Dirk musta been watching Charles Barkley
He was swayed by his opinion and Michael Wilbon’s.
just got ownaged
Brandon Bass
is going to be the only one left.
"Then, like a**holes, they took it back." -Jeff of Lookout Landing after Hamilton's 9th inning HR on April 1st.
Hornets
I know the Mavs are going the wrong direction, but you have to admit that the Hornets are just really good. Chris Paul is a great player that just abused Jason Kidd.
I think the Hornets are good...
but they’ll get tossed around by the Spurs. They might steal a game, and pound out another, but the Spurs will beat ‘em in 6.

the season record
of the Hornets vs. Spurs I believe gives the Hornets a chance. To me the key in that series is David West and can he stay out of foul trouble guarding the whine bag Timmy Duncan

The season record
for suns vs spurs was suns 3, spurs 1. Didn’t turn out too well for the suns …
Regular season means nothing in the playoffs.
Dirk and Bass
the only players that showed up for the whole series and the only players that deserve to come back.

+1 but
but how do you dump Kidd, Howard and Terry’s salaries. You’re not going to get much for these guys. You won’t even be able to get rid of them for a pair and sneakers, some cheetohs and a bag of you-know-what for josh howard.
Is Lebron James signed long-term in cleveland? You need a guy like that to make this team compete. In a weird reversal of roles Lebron can post up and our 7 footer can bomb from the outside. But this is a pipedream if you know what i mean.
Wait 'til the year after next
Look
At the other Mavs thread. I posted some trades there.
P.S. James aint going nowhere.

OK
1. You really can stop making new fanposts that could easily be posts in a directly related fanpost already made.
2. This “Dirk is soft” thing is nothing but hype. He carried, CARRIED, this team for the last 2 months. We’re talking no help here.
3. I think he’s talking more about Howard’s little party which violated Johnson’s rule, which was also the reason practice was canceled.
4. I don’t see how you could read that and say that he’s making excuses. If there’s one thing Dirk does, it’s take responsibility for what he does. He did it last year, and he’s always done it.
5. Try to watch if you’re going to make silly commentary. Don’t let Sportscenter or Charles Barkley tell you your opinion.
I personally don't think he's soft
He’s not the opposite either though. The problem with Dirk is that he’s such a liability on the defensive-end, and only average in transition. You can’t have your franchise player be that way.

I don't think
He’s a liability. He’s not the greatest defensive player, but he’s not the worst by a mile.
More importantly, though, is that the NBA is much more about team defense than individual. Individually, these are all superstars, and nobody is going to shut them down. Look at any great defensive teams, and you’ll see that they’re just that—teams.
Of course, it helps when players exert effort and know what to do on both ends, but I completely disagree with your premise. You CAN have your franchise player do that. Defense wears you down on the offensive end. Bruce Bowen can afford to be a great defensive player because he has no responsibility on the other end except floating to the corner.
If Damp could actually stay on the floor, he more than makes up for Dirk. Problem is Howard has quick hands and feet, but nothing between the ears, Terry’s too small, all the SGs are ancient and Kidd can’t keep up past the perimeter. That’s not Dirk. It’s the guy(s) who put the pieces around him.

I thought Dirk's defense was far from liability level
His rebounding was affected by a lack of lift resulting from the high ankle sprain, but I thought he defended the rim decently and rebounded sufficiently in this series.

Greatly overlooked
in all of the ‘Mavs are soft’ talk is the fact that the Hornets were just better.

I think you are overlooking
the evil conspiracy by David Stern and Dick Bavetta to bounce the Mavericks out of the playoffs the last two years.

Better?
So your telling me that almost the exact same core of players. Dirk, Josh, Terry, Damp, Stackhouse
They guys who beat a younger San Antonio 2 years ago, the guys who tore through the regular season last year at almost a record pace, those same players are no longer better than the Hornets?
Did you think they were “better” than Golden State last year? Because that was almost a bigger ass whipping than this series was.
by SaltyGoesYard on Apr 30, 2008 9:42 AM CDT up reply actions
They are not better than the Hornets.
Last year Golden State was one of the best teams in the NBA over the final 30 games of the regular season (better than Dallas). The Mavs did totally suck it up in that series and should have won though.
