New DMN newsletter up

Evan Grant has a new Rangers newsletter up, with a lot of interesting stuff in it...

The lead item addresses, somewhat obliquely, an issue I've not heard talked about much...namely, tensions within the coaching staff.  Grant seems to imply that there is more friction among a staff that has been cobbled together by multiple folks (rather than hand-picked by the manager, as is usually the case) than normal.

There's also discussions of Gerald Laird's defense, the Rangers mental approach, and a guy who says that Jon Daniels should be fired for trading Edinson Volquez for Josh Hamilton, because you should never trade pitching...

Check it out...

I don't care if there is friction with the coaching staff

Wash is the one calling for small ball down 2 runs when we are getting to the pitcher.

Moral

The team has to feel the moral drop when they see crap like that.

On another note, we like to bash Wash about keeping guys like Matt Kata on the roster if they have a good spring. Is it possible that JD did the same thing in hiring Wash based on a great interview instead of looking at the big picture and seeing he wasn’t a highly regarded managerial prospect?

Scary as it may sound

I’m beginning to agree with Miles on this one. Rudy, Connor, and the rest of the coaches shouldn’t be treated any different from Wash. None of them have had any success in making the Rangers win in the past decade. Sure Jaramillio can point to the late ‘90s, and Connor was good in Arizona, but one can also say that getting future HOFers to hit and pitch isn’t really that hard. The battle is getting mediocre players to be good and good to be great. Certainly haven’t seen much of that here in a while (other than GMJ).

I think if they fire Wash, they should fire a lot more at the same time. Rebuilding should start with the coaching staff.

how about The Murph!

he was considered mediocre, not that’s he great yet but he’s on the right track.
Evan Grant gives Rudy a lot of the credit for him.

Hitting coach

To me, one of the big issues with our players is the mental aspect of hitting. There are many times Hank and Ian try to yank everything instead of goign the other way. I don’t know if that is a Rudy thing or not. I will say that these players are all adults and they deserve much of the blame. Of course, they can’t control it when the manager wants to play small ball

This was a solid newsletter.

Grant always has good insight…maybe it’s just me, but I feel like he does a better job at covering “insider” Rangers information than TR does. Not to bag on TR or anything, I just really like Evan Grant.

I’ll echo something other guys have said: This week confuses me. I felt like the JD had been really consistent about the youth movement, but DFAing Botts after only 46 PA’s doesn’t jive with that. Whether or not Botts had a future here is another thing entirely—he’s definitely been jerked around by this organization (I feel like he’s the hitting equivalent of Joaquin Benoit). Even if we decide he doesn’t fit here because of his lack of defense, a long look (more on the order of 100-150 PAs) in the majors would’ve at least made him attractive trade bait later on this season, or at least more attractive than Broussard (Botts: .158/.304/.395 vs Broussard: .173/.244/.293).

You know, now that I think about it, I take back my earlier statement. I was confused this offseason as well. I thought we were grooming Botts for a DH/1B spot this season, platooning in Cat when Botts needs to DH. I didn’t understand the Broussard acquisition. I don’t understand why we committed to playing him against lefties for a few weeks, then reneged that commitment for Botts, then reneged our commitment to Botts for Chris Shelton. I have nothing against Shelton (and certainly his minor league numbers make him look better than Botts at approximately the same age), but it just makes no sense.

I was really happy when we hired Nolan Ryan as President of the Texas Rangers, but I’ll channel Bill Simmons here briefly: This team needs a Vice President of Common Sense.

Grant

I still enjoy TR, and I think his prose may still be better, but I think Grant has taken over as the best Rangers beat writer.

But that river of tears has dried for all of us.

by trza on Apr 30, 2008 2:14 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

He's way way better

But there is an obvious caveat.

TR is an MLB employee now. Obviously that changes things .

I think we have an ingrained tendency to compare them since they used to be the co-presidents of Juxtapositionalville…

Broussard

Will people please stop using the “playing against lefties” argument. The two lefties he started against at the beginning of the season were on Opening Night in Seattle and then the home opener. He was the starter. As much as you may not like him being the starter he was. And those two games are games the starters play in regarless of matchups, personal stats, anything. The other 160 games during the season you can mess around with lefty/righty and whatever else. But on those two games your starters are going to play.

by bigsteve on Apr 30, 2008 2:19 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

You misunderstand me.

I meant that I found it strange that we went from “he will play all the time” to “he will not play against lefties” to “Botts will play a lot more” to “DFA Botts” in a matter of a few weeks.

I don’t have an opinion on his ability to hit lefties, nor on the decision to play him all the time, because (and this was the point of my whole post) we didn’t stick to the commitment long enough to find out anything.

by jwiscarson on Apr 30, 2008 2:33 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Why

is there a “starter” in a platoon situation? If there’s a “starter” then there’s not a platoon. The object of every game is to win and the job of the manager is to put his team in the best position to win.

If that was truly why Broussard started those two games, then there’s one more reason to can Wash.

by robert_d_wilfong on Apr 30, 2008 6:41 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Really

(and certainly his minor league numbers make him look better than Botts at approximately the same age),

Botts Minor League #’s are way better than Shelton’s. Bott’s just was not given consistent at bats at the ML level, was this because Rudy just did not like his swing or something else I guess we might never know.

by sftxfan on Apr 30, 2008 3:54 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Really?

Shelton MILB lifetime, 1841 ABs: .312/.410/.503
Botts MILB lifetime, 3053 ABs: .293/.390/.484

Shelton’s out-OPSed Botts by 39 points in ~1200 fewer at-bats. That seems pretty conclusive to me.

Equivalents

I decided to look up Shelton vs Botts vs Broussard using BP’s MLE’s.

Year Name Level PA Raw Stats Adjusted VORP
2005 Botts AAA 589 .286/.375/.522 .244/.325/.443 1.5
2005 Botts Maj 30 .296/.367/.296 .296/.387/.296 0.0
2005 Shelton AAA 211 .331/.417/.569 .306/.389/.530 18.5
2005 Shelton Maj 431 .299/.360/.510 .309/.377/.545 28.2
2005 Broussard 505 .255/.307/.353 .261/.321/.490 9.2
2006 Botts AAA 259 .309/.398/.582 .268/.354/.522 13.6
2006 Botts Maj 60 .220/.317/.360 .204/.317/.327 -1.4
2006 Shelton AAA 129 .266/.372/.440 .227/.333/.427 0.7
2006 Shelton Maj 412 .273/.340/.466 .274/.347/.482 9.5
2006 Brou CLE 288 .321/.361/.519 .321/.368/.528 18.3
2006 Brou SEA 177 .238/.282/.427 .241/.294/.338 -1.3
2007 Botts AAA 459 .320/.456/.525 .259/.381/.460 17.7
2007 Botts Maj 190 .240/.326/.335 .247/.340/.361 -4.0
2007 Shelton AAA 594 .269/.381/.420 .257/.363/.422 14.3
2007 Brou SEA 264 .275/.330/.404 .286/.345/.429 4.5

well, 2005 is a clear win for Shelton, the three were pretty close to the same in 2006 (12.2 v 10.2 v 17.0) with Broussard the edge, and Botts and Shelton were pretty close to the same in 2007 with Broussard as the head-scratcher (13.7 vs 14.3 vs 4.5)

In fact, I just don’t get the decision to trade for Broussard at all. sure he played at the major leagues, but he SUCKED there. the only reason he wasn’t sent down is that he was too old to do so. He’s had one year above an OPS+ of 110. I think that if the Rangers hadn’t traded for him Seattle might have just cut him in spring training. So, we traded for a 31 year old backup first baseman who couldn’t hit, was subpar defensively, and slow as a turtle on the basepaths? And this was at Ron Washington’s request? If I’m JD, I say to Ron, STFU and play Botts. Hell, play Blalock there. Or shelton, or Vazquez. Hell, put a cardboard cutout of Lou Gehrig at first base, at least it will draw the occasional walk.

by iblum on Apr 30, 2008 4:50 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Broussard

We didn’t trade for his bat. We traded for his defense, which until this year had been pretty good. He has never had more than 7 errors in a season in the bigs. This year he has sucked but there was no reason to think so when we traded for him.

I doubt

you will find many Seattle or Cleveland fans who agree with your assessment. He’s never been that good of a glove.

Alright

I think I have said a number of times I think they both suck. I can see the justification behind starting Broussard over Botts which alot of yall cannot.

by bigsteve on Apr 30, 2008 6:54 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hmmmm

Let see, Broussard can’t hit, doesn’t walk much, doesn’t hit for power, can’t field, and can’t run. At least Botts walks and hits the occasional Home Run. Though I think now, in retrospect, the Broussard trade wasn’t the problem for Botts. It was the Bradley Signing. W/o Bradley, the Rangers were going into the season with Botts, Hamilton, and a Murphy/Byrd platoon in the outfield. Adding Bradley squeezed Botts to firstbase, where he’d never played before. Even though he “looks” like a first baseman, there is still a learning curve for the position. So, signing Broussard and Shelton means bye bye Botts.

by iblum on May 1, 2008 8:43 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, but Bradley can play some ball

and has trade value. In other words, he added value to the franchise.

Broussard has no trade value, and no more playing value than Cat, who was already on the franchise. Duplicating Cat (mediocre 1B defense, platoon only hitting), was a fairly retarded move for JD, who already had Shelton in the fold.

I've often wondered

exactly what it was about Washington that was so impressive in his interviews w/ JD and Hicks.

Reading Grant’s intro, I think that Hicks/JD might have made up their minds before any of the interviews that Conor, Jaramillo, and possibly Wakamatsu were all going to be retained as part of the new staff. Maybe the impressive thing about Worsh was that he was the only candidate interviewed that expressed he was comfortable working with a staff largely put together prior to his arrival. In that scenario, JD and Hicks were probably impressed that Wash sold them on his ability to follow a plan that they had already put in place.

Wash says the right things

Wash won me over early because he talked about how “shocked” he would be if the Rangers weren’t in the playoffs. Wash was real upbeat and positive. I can see how JD could have been fooled

The Rangers should trade for Micah Owings

to be their DH. He hits better than anyone else on this team

Talk about making the most about rare opportunities to hit, his career batting line was .346/.366/.628 before today. He hit a pinch hit homerun to tie the game for the d-backs. His 5th home run of his very short career – only 79 at bats.

For those of you counting, Jason Botts also has 5 career home runs in 4 times the at bats (282).

by JBImaknee on Apr 30, 2008 5:31 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Jennings

He should DH while he is hurt. That guy raked in college. He’s a lefty hitter that would really be helped out by the jet stream in right field. Emergency catcher as well.
