No Salty though...
at least Broussard isn’t playing.
"The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance."-Socrates
I like this line-up
I’d like it a little better if Salty was starting, though… not because I think Laird is worthless (I don’t, for the record) but with all the other youngsters in the lineup, it would just feel right.
Grieve: The Yanks have struggled so far. - Lewin: Yeah, cry me a bag of money.
Salty should be starting...
seeing as Laird is right-handed facing a righty tonight, and Salty switch-hits.
I’m assuming Millwood wanted Laird.
Doubt it...
I think it’s just Wash spliting time between the 2 right now.
"The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance."-Socrates
Rangers haven't faced a
lefty starter since Salty joined the team and aren’t scheduled to until this Sunday in Oakland.

Lineup for those too lazy to find it:
Kinsler 2B
Young SS
Hamilton DH
Bradley RF
Murphy CF
Shelton 1B
Boggs LF
Laird C
Duran 3B
Jennings to DL
http://startelegramsports.typepad.com/foul_territory/
Murray to replace him.
Max Ramirez 2008 Texas Rangers ROY
Ugh...
Excuse me, but I just have to say it once:
WTF is up with Laird catching? I thought it was gonna be Salty for two days, then Laird for 2?
I understood back-to-back
Grieve: The Yanks have struggled so far. - Lewin: Yeah, cry me a bag of money.
Scherzer
It took him one pen appearence, but he’s now a ML SP.
To continue the Max Scherzer updates from last night…
He has allowed 7 runs and 13 hits in his last 11.2 innings
And the Royals have only been getting him about 3 runs of support a game. I think we’ve got a chance.
MY's hit streak
only 42 more games to go…
Grieve: The Yanks have struggled so far. - Lewin: Yeah, cry me a bag of money.
there was a study a few months ago
that ran every single MLB game for the last 100+ years 10,000 times and found that it was more or less amazing that no one has come close to Joltin’ Joe…
Grieve: The Yanks have struggled so far. - Lewin: Yeah, cry me a bag of money.
yep
but it said that almost all of those longer hit streaks would have been between 1890’s thru 1930’s.
by Randy Richardson on Apr 30, 2008 7:20 PM CDT up reply actions
realistically, though
I’m with you… I think that’s a record that will remain for a very long time..
Grieve: The Yanks have struggled so far. - Lewin: Yeah, cry me a bag of money.
I question those results
To my understanding, that study just took the stats for each player and determined the percentage of the time that a given player would get a hit in any particular game. I don’t believe that there was any consideration of multi-hit games, and I know there was no factoring of game score, situation, etc. Basically, those 80+ game hitting streaks that were simulated would have resulted in some astronomical batting averages. To my recollection, anyway.

Woudn't call it A+, but...
it’s not as bad as JD’s usual moves.

when your in the top 5
in almost all batting categories i think its pretty close to a A+ trade.

"My death certificate will probably say: 'Cause of Death: World Series.'" Jamey Newberg
Heh....
you fuckers knee jerk on here so much. Yes, that was an awesome slam…. and I like Hambone too. Volquez has done ok in Cincy. When you say A+ trade, that is a like stealing candy from a baby from the other team. An A+ trade is a Zambrano-Kazmir or a CHRIS YOUNG/A-GONZ DEAL. Sorry, I like the move overall but it’s not A+.
There is no such thing as global warming. David Murphy was cold, so he turned the sun up.
by SarasotaRanger on Apr 30, 2008 7:55 PM CDT up reply actions
Edinson Volquez
will not have an ERA below 4 this year. He might not even have one below 4.5.
Freakin book it.
But it's more fun
to knee jerk and get all pissed off, then, when something good happens, it’s like we won the frickin’ lottery. Manic then depressive, manic then depressive. ‘Tis a vicious cycle.
re: Ann Coulter - "She doesn't get raped nearly enough." - DJ Cahill
So there's no such thing as an A+ for both teams
What if Volquez wins the CY and Hamilton wins MVP?
by robert_d_wilfong on Apr 30, 2008 7:59 PM CDT up reply actions
If Bone wins the AL MVP, then I'll eat a shit sandwich.
I’m not too worried about that with the talent in the AL. However, if Volquez wins the Cy Young, he’d probably have about 20 wins. If he’s that talented, I think that it’s like taking 6 steps forward by getting Hambone and 6 steps back by not having Volquez winning those 20 games for the Rangers. If Hambone is a 280/30/110 or better player and Volquez has a 4.80ish era or higher and goes 10-10, that’s probably a plus for Texas.
I can’t believe you guys are ready to grade this trade an A+ already.
There is no such thing as global warming. David Murphy was cold, so he turned the sun up.
by SarasotaRanger on Apr 30, 2008 8:08 PM CDT up reply actions
I'm not saying that either of those will happen
I’m just questioning your theory on what makes an A+ trade.
BTW—I believe there’s a much better chance of Hamilton winning the MVP than Volquez winning the CY.
by robert_d_wilfong on Apr 30, 2008 8:12 PM CDT up reply actions
I agree with you on those prospects.
I really don’t care what you think about what constitutes an A+ trade or how I think it should be. How can you say it is an A+ trade in April of the first year? That’s the big mystery to me.
There is no such thing as global warming. David Murphy was cold, so he turned the sun up.
by SarasotaRanger on Apr 30, 2008 8:18 PM CDT up reply actions
it might be too early too tell
but it doens’t have to be lopsided to be a+. If hamilton continues on this pace, he will be the best offensive player in the american league. that is a+. not saying that will happen, just saying that a+ is possible even if volquez turns otu to be good
Rare Gnats Sex
Did anyone else think that was a popup off the bat?
How did he hit that out? Ridiculousness. The KC announcers (the one’s I’m getting on Extra Innings) seemed to think it was a popup and then were like, “Wait, the wind is blowing this one out!”
Me, I think Hambone is just that freaking strong.

The 6’3”, 170 lb. Gomez, who turned 20 two weeks ago, was one of those guys who came on to my radar unexpectedly in Surprise last month. Anyone who sees the kid pitch, immediately falls for him.He features a low-90’s fastball with outstanding late life and a plus breaking ball that he locates well. He appeared in 17 games for the AZL club last summer, allowing just 34 hits and 10 walks in 34.1 innings, racking up 38 K’s along the way.
Like Derek Holland, Gomez belongs in the conversation when discussing the more heralded top young arms in this system like Castillo, Feliz, Font, Main, Beavan, Ramirez….

Wow, KINSLER!
Nice play. Maybe he’s putting all those early errors behind him, lik he did last year?
not Hammy?

O yeah..
Has anyone been to that downtown Rangers office thats also a store?
I was there the other day, whos offices are those?
I love Miley Cyrus.
Yep
We live downtown. It’s where we buy our tickets for games that aren’t already part of our mini plan. Seems like it’s the sales guys – the guy who sold us the mini plan has his office there.
It's generally the sales crew
But I’ve seen Hicks and JD in there before.
re: Ann Coulter - "She doesn't get raped nearly enough." - DJ Cahill
Oh sweet.
What would happen if I walked out of the store with that Tex gold glove?
I want that.
I love Miley Cyrus.
they should transfer that
ugly thing to the Atlanta Braves store

Shelton/Salty
What do you think the organizations plan is for Shelton? I’m a bit irritated that he’s played 1B two nights in a row. I would think they would want to see more of Salty. If he’s not C then he needs to be 1B on his days off, he’s a young guy who’s bat we need to get acclimated to the Bigs. I should have prefaced this with the fact I am still bitter that Botts isn’t getting the playing time instead of a guy like Shelton who is practically the same age.
Salty
Salty is a catcher. He is not a 1B and won’t play 1B this year. Whether or not he should be playing more behind home plate is another question which is very valid and most people will agree he should be everyday. But he is not a 1B. From what Wash has said Shelton will play the majority of the time at 1B and Broussard is relegated to a bench role. Salty should be playing as much as possible and DHing whenever he is not behind the plate. However Bradley and the desire to keep Hamilton fresh probably keeps that from happening right now. Once Bradley is fully healthy there should be alot more DH openings and if Laird is still here Salty can DH more

Ballpark rankings on cnn.com
On cnn.com they have ranked all the major league ballparks based on “fan” responses. I was amazed to see that TBIA was ranked 27! I happen to think TBIA should be at the exact opposite spectrum of that ranking list, maybe somewhere in the top 10. Any thoughts!?
there's a thread on that in the Fanposts

true dat
terrible calls early in the game, i sided with Ian just unfortunate it stopped a good streak he had going
Kinsler
is not hitting that much better than Laird (who sucks, of course)

badly was the wrong choice of words,
but he’s not hitting all that well – 1 extra base hit in the last nine games, only 7 all year
by Randy Richardson on Apr 30, 2008 9:14 PM CDT up reply actions
That is a good point
His SLG% does need a boost… but since he’s hitting leadoff, I haven’t been all that concerned.
yeah
1 for 4 and hittng 30 points higher than last year
good call
