Phil Hughes

First of all, longtime reader of the site, with this being my first post.

Anyhow, with Phil Hughes struggling and Hank Steinbrenner's itch to move Joba into the rotation, I think there could be an opening for the Rangers.

Would Laird+Benoit be enough to pry Hughes from the Yanks? I think if you were to go through Cashman, the answer is hell to the no. But if Hicks were to deal directly with Hank, I think there could be something of substance there.

Hughes

I think the Yanks might value Millwood.

Brian Cashman

is there to prevent that.

then he is toast.

I don't see

the Yanks giving up this early on Hughes, but I think this might be the right time to go after Kennedy. If, in a few more starts, Padilla and Millwood are still rolling, I would offer Padilla for Kennedy straight up and Millwood for Kennedy and another pitching or OF prospect and start the negotiations there.

Correct me if im wrong

But I think the Twins tried to get Hughes for Santana, and they would not give him up even for that.

by SaltyGoesYard on Apr 30, 2008 10:00 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

according to one source

he was made available for a three day window in january and then pulled back when the twins hesitated.

but yeah, hughes isn’t going anywhere.

Laird + Benoit for Hughes?

Just take a second to think if New York would actually consider that….

Not gonna happen

Maybe if you switch Salty for Laird and Hurley for Benoit, but probably not even then.

But that river of tears has dried for all of us.

Maybe

Hamilton, Hurley, Salty…

Alright let's not get carried away now...

I would hope Hamilton at this point would fetch a guy like Hughes who’s had some injury concerns of his own.

I'm not

saying I would do it, I am saying the Yankees demands are ridiculous because they overvalue there own.

Definitely no even then

The Yanks are in perpetual win-now mode, so if they were to deal Hughes, it’d be for a vet to help them the world series this year, not a minor league pitcher and a catcher who’ll be sitting behind Posada in October.

No way

This is Phil Hughes. People are down on him right now, but he’s still on, what, 21? 22? And he was universally regarded as one of the top pitching prospects in all of baseball last year, and he still has true ace potential.

You call and offer them Millwood, Chris-John Wilson, and Laird, and they’d maybe think about sending you Phil Hughes and a couple of B-grade prospects… perhaps Betances + one of their young Latin bonus babies (think Engel Beltre). But who knows if they’d even do that.

In other words… you’d have to blow them away to get your hands on the kid.

Id do

that deal…

I love Miley Cyrus.

by miles on May 1, 2008 12:59 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I would to

All apologies to Siege, who I love, and Millwood, who I like, but I’d do that deal pretty damn fast.

Hughes is 21 and playing in the pressure cooker that is New York. He’s struggling right now with his consistency, but he’s going to pull out of it, and he’s going to be a freaking beast.

It’d probably take more than what I mentioned, but at least Millwood/Siege/Laird is the general vicinity of the neighborhood of what it might take.

I honestly

Think they hang up with that offer.

I think a much more likely demand is Davis, Kiker and a lower-level prospect. They lose immediate ML help, but they get back a much fairer return.

Maybe another deal would have Salty or Laird, but there’s no way the centerpiece of the deal is Millwood.

by brettgardner on May 1, 2008 1:12 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

so what about

teagarden/kiker/arm for hughes/betances or latin guy

Every loss is one step closer to the top of the draft in 2009!

by knockoutking on May 1, 2008 1:23 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I do it.

I’m not completely sold on Teagarden. I do think Kiker will end up being a very solid player, but you’ve got to get a Hughes if you can. Betances would be too much for NY, though.

If you can get that package, I think you take it and run, but you’d doubtless have to settle for less.

I also think they want a more sure thing. I was being generous not including Hurley, but it wouldn’t surprise me one bit if that’s a deal-breaker.

by brettgardner on May 1, 2008 1:35 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

yea i agree there

i would def. consider trading teagarden/hurley for betances/hughes.

in a heartbeat!

The Yankees don't do that deal

How does that help them this year, or in the future? Hurley has No. 2 or No. 3 potential, Hughes is a potential No. 1. Combine that with Teagarden who has never been healthy in pro ball and still has major doubts about his bat. Trading a No. 1 (Betances has No. 1 potential also but is a long way off) for a No. 2/3 and catcher that may or may not hit is not a smart way to run a team.

we’ll be able to get him for the 5 tools Laird uses to eat next year, let alone Laird..

Phil Hughes is a good talent

But his durability is, well questionable.

If we make a big deal with the Yankees, I want Ian Kennedy. I still think Joba is overrated, and not worth the price it would take to grab him, and Hughes is a glass doll.

by lonestarJon on May 1, 2008 6:31 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

No

Kennedy sucks. He might end up being okay eventually, but he just doesn’t have the stuff to ever be dominant at this level.

If the Yanks have any thought that they might entertain the possibility of maybe thinking about perhaps dealing Hughes, you go after that shit HARD. 21 years old in the majors, held his own last year, has ace stuff, and one freak injury does not make him a glass doll.

But they won’t be dealing him. They know what they have and they’re not going to overreact.

I say Kennedy

Because I don’t want to be dealing a ton of talent to the Yankees. I know he’s not as good as Hughes or Joba, but he’s the only one they’d give up for a resonable price.

Hughes does seem fragile – I still remember him blowing out his hamstring trying to no-hit us last year, and then he hurt his ankle while he was on the DL for the hammy. And now this bit about a stress fracture in his ribcage? I don’t know, that doesn’t seem very durable to me. Either Hughes is damned unlucky, or his is a bit fragile.

I just don’t think I’d want to trade a ton of prospects for a guy whose had two lengthy DL stints in his first two seasons in the majors – and based upon what everyone pounded into me the other night, Joba should be pretty much untouchable. If they where actually willing to trade him, that would just make me think he’s overrated (as I already suspect).

I think Millwood and Laird makes sense to the Yanks...

I don’t think at this point they’re valuing guys like Davis/Hurley. They have plenty of youth now and you know Hank is eventually going to get impatient with the young guys and will make a push for a vet arm.

I would hold out and

try to get them to take Padilla and Laird.

Robinson Cano is doing aweful this season

lets say that trend continues all season and the Yanks have a need at 2nd base, thats one of our deeper positions with MY, IK and German all able to play everyday, and we have have so many holes to fill that we cant really have the luxury of 3 starting 2b.

lets say the yanks get pissed and are sick of it and go after a deal like MY or IK or Duran.

what does it take for you to get interested?

i can see a situation where the Yanks flip out and throw an offer at us for MY and Millwood if Hughes and Kennedy break or suck and cano keeps up his suckiness. If that trend plays out, the rangers are one of the only real teams in position to help them.
