by jwiscarson on Apr 4, 2008 11:48 PM CDT reply actions

Why pull Gabbard

Maybe I'm overreacting because I really want to see Gabbard out there as long as he is on. Is there any reason to be pulling Gabbard at 92 pitches given how he's been pitching all day?

by Gdawg on Apr 4, 2008 11:48 PM CDT reply actions

Maybe precautious

since he tweaked his ankle in the previous inning?

by jwiscarson on Apr 4, 2008 11:49 PM CDT up reply actions

Because...

...it is early in the season, he doesn't have a history of being a workhorse, and he twisted his ankle, I imagine.

Plus, you've got an 8 man bullpen and had an offday yesterday.

by Adam J. Morris on Apr 4, 2008 11:49 PM CDT up reply actions

I still don't know

Why Josh Rupe has not been used yet - after all, he's going back down by April 12th. I would be making use of him right here.

by LSJ on Apr 4, 2008 11:50 PM CDT up reply actions

It seems like a bit of overmanaging to me

Let the kid go as long as he can and save your bullpen and keep the momentum going your way.

by Gdawg on Apr 4, 2008 11:50 PM CDT up reply actions

He's at 92 now

I would at least let him finish out the 8th and see how he does. He's not playing in his first Major League game and he's not 20 or 21 years old. He has 2/3 of a season's worth of Major League starts and is 26 in 4 days. I think he can handle making 100 pitches.

Of course, if he said something about his ankle hurting or if there was some problems with it, then I understand taking him out. But again, he looked just fine and wasn't limping or anything like that.

by Gdawg on Apr 4, 2008 11:55 PM CDT up reply actions

I think that...

...if he was at 85 pitches or so, he'd have started the inning.

But there wasn't any reason to have him throw to a pitcher or two, then yank him. And I think Washington wanted to get the bullpen some work, let Fukumori pitch again in a low-pressure situation to get his confidence back...

It is an 11-0 game. Gabbard hadn't thrown more than 60-70 pitches this season. Tell him good job, get him out and let the bullpen get a couple of innings.

by Adam J. Morris on Apr 4, 2008 11:57 PM CDT up reply actions

why pull him after one or two hitters

Let him finish the inning if he's not having any trouble. Tell him he's out there that inning as long as he doesn't get into any type of trouble. If he goes over 100 pitches by that much, Fukomori gets an easy 9th to work with.

hard to throw more than 60-70 pitches in your first start...

by Gdawg on Apr 4, 2008 11:59 PM CDT up reply actions

I just don't see the point

It is an 11 run game. This gives you the chance to get some of your relievers some work. I just don't see why it would be that important to leave him out there.

by Adam J. Morris on Apr 5, 2008 12:00 AM CDT up reply actions

well for one

you can end up seeing what is going on now where you lose the momentum of the shut out and end up with the Angels getting some bright side of this game.

Also, you end up using relievers that don't need to be used now. You don't know what will happen in tomorrow's game or the day after. I understand there's an off day again after this series, but what if there is a few extra innings in tomorrow's game. Instead of having a huge advantage in Game 3 with more RP rested, you are about even with the Angels.

by Gdawg on Apr 5, 2008 12:11 AM CDT up reply actions

I don't think momentum...

...means anything...

I don't think the Angels have a better shot at winning tomorrow because of momentum they got beating up the last guy in the bullpen in the 9th.

And I don't think it makes any difference as far as the bullpen being more rested. I think there's more concern with guys not getting enough work than with guys in the pen not being rested.

by Adam J. Morris on Apr 5, 2008 12:16 AM CDT up reply actions

The Rangers are and always will be

a very streaky team. They need to use any momentum they have.

Its the Rangers. The furthest thing from my mind now is the bullpen not getting enough work as the season goes on.

by Gdawg on Apr 5, 2008 12:19 AM CDT up reply actions

Nippert aside

Normally, we would've used two relievers. That's just a typical game situation. I don't see why you want to stretch a young, "injury-prone" pitcher who tweaked his ankle in the previous inning to preserve the bullpen.

We've historically had starting pitching troubles. Why roll the dice when we don't have to?

by jwiscarson on Apr 5, 2008 12:16 AM CDT up reply actions

If his ankle was hurting

He should have just left after that inning. They had a 6 run lead at that time, he was starting to get up there in the pitch count. But if his ankle wasn't hurting and he just twisted it for a second, then that shouldn't be a concern.

He was at his 90th pitch. If he can't make it past 90 pitches in a game without being a huge injury concern, than the Rangers need to be moving him to the bullpen or something.

And again, anything can happen as we are seeing right now. The Angels are making this thing interesting with the middle of their lineup coming up, 6 runs scored in this inning, and a man on 2nd. Gabbard was doing just fine and should have been left in the game until he was letting baserunners on or was more than just a few pitches past 100 pitch mark.

by Gdawg on Apr 5, 2008 12:24 AM CDT up reply actions

The 8th is likely to take more than 8 pitches.

What if he is out there for 110? 115? 120?. Not that 100 pitches is a magical mark I just see no reason to chance it this early in the season. He probably topped out at 60-70 pitches this spring. You could be asking him to throw an additional 30-50 pitches.

Not to mention an 8 man pen with a days rest.

White Women!

by nikpin on Apr 4, 2008 11:57 PM CDT up reply actions

There is no rule that doesn't let you pull him

after you brought him in. If he is at 120, than just yank him.

by Gdawg on Apr 4, 2008 11:59 PM CDT up reply actions

True

But you send him out there you want him to finish the inning. I guess I'm just more cautious its the 4th game of the year and you're up 11-0. No reason to risk it.

White Women!

by nikpin on Apr 5, 2008 12:01 AM CDT up reply actions

he could still finish the inning IMO

He should go out there knowing that he is almost done for the day. If he lets a batter get on base, than he should know that he's done for the day and be happy with the amazing game he pitched.

by Gdawg on Apr 5, 2008 12:12 AM CDT up reply actions

Lets hope we get the good Padilla and Millwood in the next 2 days. This bullpen won't handle any of their 5 IP performances and anything worse than that is a guaranteed loss for that game.

Still good

because he's a guy that ended last year on the DL, he already had a scare and this is a decided game.

by FirebatM3 on Apr 5, 2008 12:28 AM CDT up reply actions

Good.

Give me the bullpen every day. I would rather put up with an inconsistent bullpen now than deal with starting pitchers who are worn out by June because we left them in for "just one more inning" every time because they'd been good up to that point.

by jwiscarson on Apr 5, 2008 12:28 AM CDT up reply actions

who's saying everytime?

First game of the season, Gabbard's at 92 pitches. The Rangers wouldn't be pulling a Dusty Baker here if they left him in for one more inning.

by Gdawg on Apr 5, 2008 12:30 AM CDT up reply actions

It's his first start

we had a ten run lead. Why the hell is this even a debate?

by FirebatM3 on Apr 5, 2008 12:32 AM CDT up reply actions

No, they'd be pulling a Grady Little

in early-season form. I'll say this again: What do you get? We won't even need a fifth starter for another week and Gabbard tweaked his ankle. What about this situation makes you think that risking an injury to a starting pitcher is worth saving one inning of work off our bullpen? At this point, I seriously want to know.

by jwiscarson on Apr 5, 2008 12:32 AM CDT up reply actions

once more

if the ankle was any problem, he should have been benched after that inning.

Why did Gabbard even go out and pitch the 7th inning? He was nearing the 90 pitch limit. He finished the season on the DL and is an injury risk. The game was 6-0. Perfect time to bench the young starter and bring in the bullpen, right?

by Gdawg on Apr 5, 2008 12:34 AM CDT up reply actions

It's questionable there

considering we had a short-ish top of the seventh. We had a long top of the eighth, and then it just makes no sense to me to keep your starter in in such a blowout.

Honestly, I would've been irritated to see any of our starting pitchers still in the game at that point. After seven innings, we knew Gabbard did well. We still don't know what we have in our bullpen, and Wash decided to try out some of our new faces. I'll concede that it's questionable for him to stay in for the seventh, but I just don't understand the obsession with another inning out of him after we dropped another five runs on the Angels.

by jwiscarson on Apr 5, 2008 12:50 AM CDT up reply actions

It was before that

I don't like seeing starters who are doing well pulled out of games early specifically because things like this can happen. If the guy is doing well and clearly has enough left in his tank to be out there for another inning, there is no reason to be pulling him early and waste bullpen arms who could potentially let the game get away. I think Wash has a tendency of doing this too. So what happens if we didn't score the 5 runs for Gabbard in the end? You're looking at a tie game, heading into the 10, with the Rangers having to use 4 bullpen arms already as opposed to letting Gabbard pitch the 8th and sticking in Fukomori for the 9th.

by Gdawg on Apr 5, 2008 1:02 AM CDT up reply actions

What was before that?

My point is that there's a huge difference between 6-0 and 11-0. Fukumori went out when it was 11-0 and did fine, and there's no way that any reasonable manager leaves Nippert in that long if the game is 6-0.

I don't think either one of us can say that Gabbard "clearly" had enough in his tank to go for another inning. If you don't trust the bullpen in these situations, when do you trust them? Never? Your argument still doesn't make sense to me.
