Game 6 game day thread

Texas Rangers at Los Angeles Angels, Apr 6, 2008 2:35 PM CDT

Vicente Padilla v. Jon Garland...

Should be an interesting matchup...Garland is a low-walk, low-strikeout guy who puts the ball in play, so you may see the Rangers be a little more aggressive early in counts than they have been...

Go Rangers...

More Former Ranger news

Gabe Kapler is on fire. Hitting .462 with a homer and 4rbi so far.

5 rbi...

just had a sac fly. He's getting some AB's with Cameron out. Kapler was managing A ball for the BoSox last year, I didn't know that.

your right, signifigant difference, you'd have to believe if he was still in the hitters league (AL), the numbers wouldn't quite be as positive. True test will be the interleague play

Meh...

does Young really need a day off from the field this early? Why not DH Bradley or Botts. Vasquez has already had a start this series.

Young

He's been sick, and has played like crap. I don't have a problem with him DHing today.

by Adam J. Morris on Apr 6, 2008 2:02 PM CDT up reply actions

Except he hasn't

been hitting. I don't see why they wouldn't have just given him a day off and DH Botts.

by sprite on Apr 6, 2008 2:04 PM CDT up reply actions

My guess?

Washington wants to avoid the bad start the team had last year. There's been a lot of emphasis this spring on getting off to a better start than in 2007.

So he's going to ride the guys he has confidence in as much as possible early in the year. He doesn't believe Botts can hit, so he's not going to play him much early.

My guess is that, if the Rangers had won yesterday, guaranteeing they'd be coming home with a .500 record, Botts plays today.

by Adam J. Morris on Apr 6, 2008 2:07 PM CDT up reply actions

Ok AJM...

If you are going to take shots at MY every chance you get then you have to stop defending OMFT when everyone says he sucks.

We all know that MY is not a great defensive shortstop, but I do know one thing...

MY's defense >>>>>>> OMFT offense

If he needs a day off because he has been ill that's fine. It's not because he has played like crap.

"The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance."-Socrates

by slc ranger on Apr 6, 2008 2:06 PM CDT up reply actions

Umm...

What?

Young hasn't played like crap so far this season?

What are you watching?

And I'm not sure how I'm taking a shot at Young by saying that the fact he's played poorly so far this year probably factors into the decision to give him a partial day off.

by Adam J. Morris on Apr 6, 2008 2:08 PM CDT up reply actions

It's 5 games...

into the year and he's been sick at least 2 or 3 of those. All I'm saying is that you like to take that shots at MY whenever you can. Give the guy a break, if he is hitting .200 with 15 errors at the ASB then knock on him.

"The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance."-Socrates

by slc ranger on Apr 6, 2008 2:13 PM CDT up reply actions

x

All I'm saying is that you like to take that shots at MY whenever you can.

Bullshit.

I'm saying he's been sick and played like crap so far this season, so it makes sense for Washington to give him what amounts to a half-day off.

I fail to see how that's taking a shot at Young.

by Adam J. Morris on Apr 6, 2008 2:15 PM CDT up reply actions

I concur

I didn't see him take a shot in that comment either.

I get the feeling Wash was against keeping Botts.

It almost looks like he's sending a message to JD that he didn't want Botts and isn't going to play him. Buck used to pull crap like that, but I've wanted to give Wash the benefit of the doubt. If Botts' only function is to be to spell BB in cleanup time, then they're wasting that roster spot.

he's one of the better ones. Sure, he doesn't hit .300 every year, but he's solid for what his job is. He gets 40+% of runners. League average is somewhere around 30%.

Eh

He still HAS to be benched vs lefties, which is what Ive been vocal about.

And i still dont know that he is any better than chris shelton whne you consider that. maybe i underestimated him a bit though.

of course, its just 6 games.

Lower career ops

and needs to be platooned. Its a nice 6 games but its 6 games. shelton may have just lost it though.

but lets be realistic... hes a first basemen with a career line of .266/.327/.459

by DShep on Apr 6, 2008 4:15 PM CDT up reply actions

let's really be honest

and say he has 4 hits this year, 3 of which are HRs. those will not continue

by phatjeremy on Apr 6, 2008 4:18 PM CDT up reply actions

You got to be kidding.

Shelton has had one good week in the majors against RA freaking Dickey and the Rangers.

" Winning doesn't always mean being first,
winning means you are doing better than you have done before"

by coolaid on Apr 6, 2008 4:20 PM CDT up reply actions

people who say that

need to look at some freaking stats.

he hit 300 with a .870 ops the year before as a righty in comerica. rivals anything brousard has done.

by DShep on Apr 6, 2008 4:21 PM CDT up reply actions

BB

he hit .321 with .880 ops in 2006 with Cleveland.

He has been

splitting time with Sexson. Not many players have success when they get at bats couple of days a week.

Shelton has been DFA since then and in the Minors so I don't know why you bring that up.

" Winning doesn't always mean being first,
winning means you are doing better than you have done before"

by coolaid on Apr 6, 2008 4:40 PM CDT up reply actions

....because you posted his 2006 line

while leaving out a fourth of it. i think its pretty obvious why I would mention it.

by DShep on Apr 6, 2008 4:41 PM CDT up reply actions

well

Shelton couldn't beat out Casey at 1st base last year and BB put up decent numbers last year.

Not saying he is the second coming of Teixeira but he is decent player who is going to be here for one year and next year we will probably see Chris Davis.

" Winning doesn't always mean being first,
winning means you are doing better than you have done before"

by coolaid on Apr 6, 2008 4:47 PM CDT up reply actions

.734 ops from a 1b

who is only being played against righties is not "decent numbers".

but the numbers arnt worth arguing anymore (or as much as they have been).

Look, the bottom line is that they are both marginal 1bs. Me saying I WASNT SURE that he was a better choice than chris shelton (given franchise circumstances and roster spots) should not be cause for an uproar. whatsoever. especially when my next post on the matter said that sheldon may be "done" and have lost it.

as long as wash quickly decides to platoon him with botts, i am fine with ben broussard. casually mentioning chris shelton was not meant to be some condemnation of ben broussard.

by DShep on Apr 6, 2008 4:52 PM CDT up reply actions

Shelton

hasn't been good since the first month of 2006. He was awful since then in the Majors and wasn't anything special in the minors.

by Gdawg on Apr 6, 2008 4:21 PM CDT up reply actions

speaking of the first couple months of 2006

what has BB done since then? sucked in seattle and had a good week here.

look, i just said ben broussard was fine against righties and that chris shelton may have just lost it, but a .200 average with 3 homeruns for a week doesnt make him awesome.

by DShep on Apr 6, 2008 4:24 PM CDT up reply actions

BB at least had a possible reason

for not hitting well. Shelton just disappeared out of nowhere and lost the job. Broussard didn't lose the job as much as Sexson was just constnatly given attempts.

by Gdawg on Apr 6, 2008 4:28 PM CDT up reply actions

saying shelton MIGHT be a better option than broussard

is hardly claiming he is mark teixeira.

and when i argued about it in the offseason, a major factor was that broussard is most likely 1 and done as an older vet on a 1 year contract and shelton had some potential to help in he future. Not a strictly 1 v 1 who is going to produce better in 2008.

7th inning stretch side note:

That Mark Gubizca guy the Angels have commentating on the TV broadcast is a serious moron. I actually thought he was Rex Hulder for a couple innings, because he was saying stupid shit that only Rex usually says. It's very disturbing that the Angels have gone out and managed to find not one, but two total dumbballs like Rex and Gubizca. Very disturbing.
