And Chris Davis has moved beyond beast. He's a beasticon. Home run today, and hitting .391 on the year.
Elvis Andrus is hitting .333, but he's also 0 for 3 stealing bases. That could be better.
Still, it feels good to look at the Frisco box scores right now.

The rangers have both hitting and pitching prospects.
Hitting:
Davis, Elvis, Engel Beltre, Teagarden, Duran, Ramirez, Whittleton
Pitching:
Hurley, Neftali Perez, Matt Harrison, Kiker, Main, Beavan, Fabio Castillo
Does Murphy still count as a prospect? is he rookie eligible?

I know players skipping AAA isn't the norm, but that's basically what the Braves did with Saltalamacchia last season, if I'm not off base. It's interesting to consider.

I think he would put up very Victor Diaz-like lines right now. He still needs to get a feel for what is a strike and what is not, wich is scary considering he does what he does right now without that knowledge.

I doubt he
doesn't have a feel for the strike zone. It is probably him thinking that he can hit anything and not being patient enough to lay off the bad pitches.

Gave up two homeruns in the first to Seattle, and then quickly gets through the second. Hopefully he pitches a good game and the Orioles can get one more win, until we beat them of course.

am i the only one that remembers
how his arm was stated as a highlight when he came here? that he could in fact throw?
i know he wouldnt approach laird in throwing out runners, but i doubt he would repeat what he did last year. as long as you are at least a threat to throw someone out its ok for me.

Arm isn't the only thing
I believe that he is just too big to be an effective big league catcher. With few exceptions like Lance Parrish, you just don't see effective catchers over 6'3 for a reason. That is the main reason I think they should begin the transition to 1st base right now.

Let's get some perspective real quick
Laird is 6'2". So is Jorge Posada, and Jason Varitek. Chris Snyder (diamondbacks) is 6"3". So is Brian McCann (atlanta). Joe Mauer is 6"5".
Salty is 6'4". And yet you're telling me he's too tall to be a catcher because of an extra inch or two? I'm not saying Salty is ever gonna be a great defender, but by no means is he "too tall" to play the catching position.

was 6'5'' as well. Salty's defensive skill set is the issue here, not his height.

Funny. Yes, I'm not trying to say Salty is a brilliant defender, but his height is most certainly not the issue.
I still say his defense is adequate, though. I trust Matt Walbeck when he says Salty's blocking and game-calling skills are good enough - once he refines his throwing accuracy, he should be servicable enough defensively to stick behind the plate a good 5 years, if not more.

I don't want
a catcher who is "serviceable enough defensively". I'm ready for a catcher who has the ability to increase pitching production by calling a good game, limiting pass balls and controlling the running game.
Offensive value at catcher is a plus but not if it comes at the expense of what will ultimately be a young and inexperienced pitching staff. The Rangers are only going to go as far as our pitching takes us and if offense value at catcher is lost as a result, so be it.

That would be true if we played in a pitchers park
But in the Ballpark in Arlington, offense outweighs defense. A catcher with the abilty to hit home runs, and provide you with offense throughout the lineup is going to be a lot more valuable than a catcher who has great defense, but questionable or even average offense.
And besides, once again, Walbeck says Salty's game-calling skills are up to par. So the arguement that he cannot handle a pitching staff really isn't very strong. In fact, I might go so far as to say he can handle a staff just as well, if not better than Laird already. He calls a good game, and presents a good target, and you can't ask for much more from a catcher as far as handling the pitching staff goes.
If our pitching staff is ever going to be good enough to take us anywhere, it won't matter how good a defensive catcher we have anyway, because good pitchers will win even if there's a schlub behind the dish (see also: San Diego Padres) and Salty's no schlub. But if you have to have a premier offensive catcher to "mask" the shortcomings of your pitching staff, you probably don't have much of a pitching staff.

It's kind of true
If we ever really do develop a pitching staff that'll take us to the world series, they will be able to overcome not having a defensive genuis behind the plate. Not that a great defensive catcher isn't nice, but it's not imperative to the success of a team. And in this ballpark, a great defensive catcher certainly isn't as imperative as having a balanced offense.
As for Teagarden, I don't know how anyone can consider him ahead of Salty at this point. He has health problems, and he struck out 40% of the time in AA. I agree, he'll be a solid catcher someday, but I don't think his defense could ever outweigh the offensive potential Salty can provide - at this point. I could be wrong, of course, and I reserve final judgement until I see Tea play in the majors, and see how good his offensive can really be, but for now, Salty should be considered the catcher of the future.
