I had to step away from the comp for a min, tried to make a post and was told unceremoniously that the thread was closed.

Not that this game is worth commenting on at this point, but hey.

What will be the biggest achillies heal this year?

A) terrible defense (*cough*kinsleryoung*cough*)

My guess is

the Rangers will hit better with RISP than the rest of the league, and we will hear about lack of timely hitting on every loss.

Somehow, some folks think that you ought to hit 1.000 with RISP, rather than the usual .330 OBP or so.

Granderson coming back soon

should boost the offense.

"You are this month's NYTXFAN." - t ball

by inactive lsb user on Apr 8, 2008 9:20 PM CDT up reply actions

Ostensibly yes

But their CF'rs (a l/r platoon of Clete Thomas and Brandon Inge) are knocking the snot out of the ball.

Thomas: .467/.467/.533/1.000
Inge: .286/.423/.667/1.090

Now, I don't know how those guys have been defensively, but Granderson will be hard pressed to top those offensive numbers. As odd as it sounds, CF has been pretty much the only thing going right for the Tigers so far.

by thedirkatron on Apr 8, 2008 9:44 PM CDT up reply actions

Fair enough

But the LF Jacque Jones / Thames platoon and their sub .300 OBP's should be permanently displaced from LF in favor of the Thomas/Inge platoon, so Granderson is actually a huge boost don't you think?

"You are this month's NYTXFAN." - t ball

by inactive lsb user on Apr 8, 2008 10:28 PM CDT up reply actions

Well

maybe we stat lovers might think Thomas/Inge should replace Jones/Thames in LF, but I highly doubt that'll happen.

I think Jones/Thames are pretty entrenched in LF, at least for the time being.

And, fwiw, I actually do think Granderson's return will help them even if he doesn't produce as well as the platoon he's replacing, because I think getting him back will be a major boost to the team's spirits.

Wow...

I'm so glad I recorded that big pile of shit and was looking forward to coming home and watching it all day.

On the bright side at least I didn't call in sick and waste a day off to watch it live.

JJ is scaring me. to many 85 mph frisbees being flung up there. It's still early but this guy better learn some control or he will give up more HR's than any other pitcher in MLB this year. Ian had a bad day too.

Well the nice thing about baseball is the mourning only last a day. It's still the O's, gotta think the Rangers can take the next 2 and win the series.

you are lucky

it was a horrible game but not a horrible day at the park...although it would've been MUCH nicer if we pulled out something close to a decent game.

Jennings may indeed never make it back 100%, but look at the bright side - we'll have a few starts from Ponson, and then a few from Patterson. that's exciting in some regards...

taking 2 of 3 would be nice, but you can't expect more than a split to close out...problem is, the freakin' Angels keep finding ways to win games they're down late in

Impressions from the game.

I went to that fiasco yesterday and sat out in the left field stands about 4 rows up from the rail. Before the game, we tried the buffet in the Diamond Club and were sitting up there during all of the pre-game stuff. Some of my impressions from the game:

1) Nolan Ryan has put on a lot of weight and he looks very uncomfortable and out of place in a suit. (We saw him up close in the Diamond Club glad-handing some of Mr. Hicks' personal guests--which didn't include us.)

2) The food in the Diamond Club is very good. Nolan's cattle apparently render delicious, tender prime rib.

3) It's good to be a "guest" of Mr. Hicks. No waiting in line and plenty of opportunities to shake hands and visit with Ranger celebs. (We saw Ryan, Hicks himself, Jim Sundberg, JD, and Jamey.)

4) The view ain't so good from the left field stands.

5) Section 6 had a bunch of lesbians in it yesterday.

6) Lesbians are cool, especially when they come in pairs that include a really hot feminine lesbian accompanied by a huge, man-ish, jealous lesbian.

7) Lesbians are not so cool when they start trying to get the goddamned wave going.

8) The field looked immaculate.

9) Jennings looked horrible.

10) Mike Young was hitting the ball on the nose yesterday ... it was just going straight to the right fielder (which happened frequently during his slow start last season).

11) Between Josh Hamilton and David Murphy, there aren't going to be many balls that aren't caught in the left field gap.

12) Next to Franklyn German, Marlon Byrd is the fattest guy on the team.

13) Wash can't wait until the end of May when he can force a callup of Mench and send Botts packing.

14) Gerald Laird is a vicious rampaging beast.

15) Young looks much better in the field now that he's over the flu bug.

16) I hate going to games and watching everything that can go wrong with runners on base actually go wrong. They were just snake bit yesterday.

17) I am also going tomorrow where I will supposedly get to see Botts start a game. I am excited about this but wary at the same time. I'm sure he'll be pressing since it's obvious to him that his chances are going to be few and far between and Mench's situation has to be resolved before June. I'm really disappointed in the way Wash is handling Botts.

18) Going to the ballpark is still a wonderful and refreshing experience, and I look forward to many more such experiences this season.

Impressions from the game

I really liked the new entrance at the Home Plate entrance. I was in section 16 about 24 rows up but there were no lesbians that I was aware of near me. I wish I had had an umbrella for the sun when it came out. I had a hat but that just made it hot. I like the night time starts better I think.

i don't think you are right about botts

scap load or die

by ab03 on Apr 9, 2008 4:43 PM CDT up reply actions

Well ...

Botts is the only position player not to start a game. Even in mop up duty yesterday, he put Cat in for Byrd instead of Botts and left Benny B in as well. It seems like that would have been a good game to let Botts pinch hit instead of Cat since the game was already lost at that point anyway. I'm obviously making some assumptions on the basis that Botts has 1 AB after 7 full games, but I don't recall Wash sounding too excited about Botts making the 25 at the end of Spring Training either.

Buck treated Laird the same way at the beginning of Barajas' last season here. Hopefully Botts will react similarly and force his way into the lineup a little more often.
