I knew it was pretty good, but I didn’t expect it to be that low.

While it is great to see that

lets not get carried away just yet. After all, it is just early May and the summer heat (i.e the 100 degree temperatures), during which some of the Rangers pitchers have fallen apart in the past, isnn’t here just yet. Maybe if this trend continues into late July, we might have somthing exciting on our hands.

by MayurP on May 10, 2008 11:35 AM CDT reply actions

I see it this way

If we can get good pitching and have a good record through May, then when the heat shows up in June and July, the Rangers will be in a good position to slug their way through bad pitching (since the ball will carry more for the home team as well as the away team). But if bad pitching buries the team before the end of May, then all the offense in the world won’t help when the heat is on.

Pitchers falling apart in the summer heat

This is convential wisdom that, I don’t think, has a whole lot of support in the data.

If anything, it seems like recently, pitchers have started off poorly and done better as the season went on.

Just curious

but is the summer heat a regular excuse in other major-league cities?

Does it not?

I’ve honestly never looked in to it, I’ve just accepted it as fact. Would you ever put something together on it, Adam?

I feel I may be too lazy.

Atlanta

anyone spent the summer there, how about Miami.

Much rather play here than in the humidity of those 2 cities.

The jet steam and heat seem to be overplayed here.

That is not me in the photo, so relax.

I've visited Atlanta and Phoenix numerous times.

I lived in Miami for 3 years and in Longview, TX for 15. Texas has the most miserable heat I’ve experienced… easily.

one-upmanship

That is a joke. Lived in Georgia and for 2 years, Florida 8. I can’t handle the humid heat of the southeast. My point, however, is that it is hot in other areas of the country and, arguably, just as miserable.

There are teams all over the south playing every summer day. I would not trade that heat for Cleveland, Minn., NY, Boston etc. in the early spring or late Fall.

I believe heat to be (overall) a non-factor.

That is not me in the photo, so relax.

by rldwb on May 10, 2008 3:33 PM CDT up reply actions

Don't call it one-upmanship

when you ask if anyone had been to Atlanta or Miami in the summer and someone responds. Heat an overall non-factor?! Wow. I’ve got a bridge for sale if you’re interested.

by SarasotaRanger on May 10, 2008 4:18 PM CDT up reply actions

I'd say that heat is certainly a factor

...has to be. But is it more ‘debilitating” in Arlington than other cities, or have we just blindly accepted that as an excuse for our late-season pitching woes…and, unfortunately, an excuse for why we don’t sign top pitchers.

So far, we have the heat, a hitters park, and a bad tradition….oh, and money.

No way

Anyone who lives in constant summer humidity (I do up here in CT) will tell you the same thing hot day: “It’s not the heat, it’s the humidity”

I’ve gone to the following places during mid-summer:
Dallas
Las Vegas
Los Angeles/Palm Springs

It reached 100+ in all of those places during my time, and it was much easier to handle than a 90+ degree day in Connecticut.

That’s just my spin though.

by cmkelly29 on May 10, 2008 4:32 PM CDT up reply actions

I understand the misery of humid weather.

However, it was still humid in East Texas… at least in Longview… and the temp was 5-10 degrees higher than other places. I’m sure everybody has their view, but my opinion from living around the southeast is that Texas is the worst.

by SarasotaRanger on May 10, 2008 4:40 PM CDT up reply actions

The difference

Dry heat just stings a bit, it’s more of a “in the sun sucks, but the shade isn’t too bad” type heat.

Humid heat is just completely overwhelming. You can’t hide from the thick, warm air.. It’s like trying to breathe with a hot-water soaked washcloth over your face.

It’s scary heat, especially for the elderly, asthmatic, and allergic.

by cmkelly29 on May 10, 2008 4:44 PM CDT up reply actions

The elderly, asthmatic, and allergic

Fortunately, that description does not currently fit the Rangers pitching staff, so we should be OK this summer.

humid weather

the powers that be had a chance to build a “domed” stadium when they built this current stadium and they did not do it. The spin at the time was “it was more like how baseball was supposed to be played” but I think it was a money thing and they just did not want to spend the money to enclose it and put a roof on it. Wasn’t Tom Grieve part of that decision? Wasn’t he the one that named it The Ballpark in Arlington? My opinion is that is the worst name ever for a sports stadium.

it would have been nice if they had built a retractable roof

Retractable roof

The technology wasn’t really there at the time to do it affordably.

It they built the stadium today - or even, say, in 1999 - it would have had a retractable roof, I’d bet.

There will be

Developmental hitches in the Rangers’ “gitalong” scattered thru this season, I’d think. In addition to those coming off injury, some pitchers will fare well until the league adjusts to ‘em. Hopefully, some will adjust right back, or become simply tough to face.

This is just BS...

M’s manager McLaren sayig the Rangers started the incident by “saying things”.

http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/mariners/2004404796_sexson10.html

Well let me just say this “thing” then John McLaren. You are a dipshit who is going to lose his job after the Rangers sweep your team in Arlington.

I guess you can plunk 2 batters (one after he hits a HR) and that isn’t starting anything, but talking trash is. What a joke.

I really wish...

...the Seattle fans/media/coaches, etc. would stop making excuses for the whole thing. Just admit they let frustration get the best of them and move on.

by The Best Micah on May 10, 2008 1:58 PM CDT up reply actions

Like you said...

That’s BS.

I still can’t believe that the Mariners have supported Sexson through this. If anything, the team should have handed down some sort of punishment of it’s own to Sexson for embarrassing them like that.

by LSJ on May 10, 2008 2:28 PM CDT up reply actions

Most teams,

including the Rangers, have hopes at the beginning of the season. The Mariners had expectations. They are struggling and are expremely frustrated. They lost their composure and made asses of themselves.

by Jea103 on May 10, 2008 3:31 PM CDT up reply actions

Which is exactly why

The Mariners need to make an example of Sexson, to prevent that from happening again.

All teams get frusterated, as a Rangers fan I know all about that – but going beserkers is a little different than frustration. the Mariners entire franchise lost a lot of face over that incedent, which is why it suprises me that they’re backing Sexson still.

With Milton Bradley on our team, this is something I’ve given some thought to, long before the Sexson thing – and if one of our Rangers did something like that, I know I’d be embarrassed as hell. And I’d want the guy to face some penalty from our management, to prevent it from occuring again.

by LSJ on May 10, 2008 3:44 PM CDT up reply actions

Well

What to say. I’d agree that a franchise should be the first to penalize out of bounds actions and reactions. Right after one capable teammate knocks the everloving, blue-eyed, fecal lifeblood out of the opponent who started it up. Ponson has a point. If you are going to be penalized, leave a lasting imprint of why. Basically, there isn’t much point to fighting. If truly threatened, or attacked, go into devastation mode. Then it isn’t a fight, it’s trash removal.

Incredible....

“Richie’s frustrated and he’s had some issues off the field. And I think, talking to Richie, he expected maybe for them to retaliate, and when the ball was up in the eye area, it wasn’t over inside toward his head, but when your eyes see that, you react, and he reacted. He was real frustrated and he went out to the mound. I wish he had dropped his helmet off on the way, but he didn’t.”

- McLaren

It wasn’t over inside towards his head….. So you’re saying it wasn’t close to hitting him, but you are essentially justifying his actions. Just own it and say your guy screwed up. That should win your guy more points than bullshitting the league by saying he was frustrated and it was a questionable pitch. It clearly wasn’t a questionable pitch.
