Errors, Unearned Runs, & Wins

The Rangers have been pretty bad when it comes to errors this season (37).  So it is no surprise that the Rangers have also allowed the most unearned runs (29).  If they cut down on the errors, and thus the unearned runs, how much better would the Rangers be?  Using the Pythagorean Record method.  I've included the actual record of the Rangers, what their suggested Pythagorean Record, their Pythagorean Record if they allowed zero unearned runs, and their Pythagorean Record if they had the league average unearned runs (13).

For all the complaining about the errors and unearned runs, the Rangers are actually doing well.  Still, I would like to see the Rangers reduce the numbers of errors.  Also, their 223 runs allowed is the most in the majors, so a reduction there would be nice as well.

On the one hand, yes...

but also, the pythag is skewed by some games like the 19-6 debacle in Detroit, while the wins in the recent hot sreak have usually been 2-0, 4-0, 5,0, etc. So since the Rangers are currently outperforming the pythag, I’d think allowing the league average in unearned runs would probably give the Rangers a few more wins.

But looking at it, the only loss where there were as many or more unearned runs as the margin of the loss was April 12 vs. TOR (4-1 loss, 3 unearned runs). If the Rangers had won that game, they’d be at .500 right now.

Yeah, it's hard to use Pythag during the season

Especially early in the season. I look at it as more of a stat that one use at or close to the end of the season to figure out how good and how (un)lucky a team was.

Hardball Times

The Hardball Times uses it to chart teams in relation to one another. I think it would be interesting to plot the “progress” of the Rangers on a month to month basis using Pythag.

So basically...

according to the pythag, our high amount of errors have caused us to lose 1 game that we shouldn’t have if allowing league average errors. Or 3 extra games if we’d played perfect all season.
