Mad Max Taking Infield at 1st
per Jamie per Evan.
Please Lord, could it be possible for Max to pick it up REALLY quick and then have a similar debut in the bigs as Brandon Boggs??
I'm reaching here but that's what I tend to do.
Oh and for my 75 words, I give you the English Bill of Rights.
The English Bill of Rights (1689), one of the fundamental documents of English constitutional law, differed substantially in form and intent from the American Bill of Rights, because it was intended to address the rights of citizens as represented by Parliament against the Crown. However, some of its basic tenets are adopted and extended to the general public by the U.S. Bill of Rights, including
- the right of petition
- an independent judiciary (the Sovereign was forbidden to establish his own courts or to act as a judge himself),
- freedom from taxation by royal (executive) prerogative, without agreement by Parliament (legislators),
- freedom from a peace-time standing army,
- freedom [for Protestants] to bear arms for their defence, as allowed by law,
- freedom to elect members of Parliament without interference from the Sovereign,
- freedom of speech in Parliament,
- freedom from cruel and unusual punishments and excessive bail, and
- freedom from fines and forfeitures without trial.

Whatever it takes
to get Max’s bat in the major league line-up. I’m not the biggest fan of Max playing 1B but we don’t exactly have an incumbent in the majors and I’m sure his defense wold be passable.

And another thought:
Isn’t it best to get Max time at as many positions as possible (1B, 3B, C, maybe even some LF) so that when he comes up, we have as many options as possible to get his bat in the lineup? Since he’s probably never going to be good enough defensively to hold down a position full-time, it’s probably best that he at least have some versatility.

I don't think...
...Ramirez is going to be playing any 3B.

why? what have you seen?
that makes you think 3b would be out of the question?
I’d say LF is out of the question given his foot speed, but why do you rule out 3b?

He doesn't need quite that many positions
to be valuable. If all he did was DH, 1B and occasionally catch (or catch 1-2 times a week after Laird is traded) that would be enough. Cat might be gone, hell Shelton might be gone, who knows.
And I think it’s been said several times here that he is NOT a realistic option for 3B or LF.

Well, I don't mean actually rotate him in LF and 3B
Just make sure he can play there in a pinch. That would surely increase his value and versatility.

Not if he's gosh awful in those spots
You have plenty of LF options around, and I have to think that you’ll have better 3B options even in a pinch. Having said that, 3B does make more sense than LF for him, I think.
Not that he is shaped just like a Molina, but just to use them as an example of a stubby slow catcher, you can’t just plug a guy like that in wherever and expect him to be major league caliber.
He should be able to play a fringe or better catcher, a passable 1B and maaaybe a bit at 3B, but that is the absolute most, I would think.

I'm pretty sure
you don’t want to see Max in the OF dude; he’s very very slow

Yeah, and
he needs to start taking grounders at 2nd, too.
Uh-hu…yep!
...it's the weekend, so why the hell not?

Really
is there any reason in the world that he shouldn’t be closing for us by mid August?

Im freaking tired of this switching position crap
I blame video games for all of it. In video games you can put a guy just about anywhere and they will play good defense and won’t commit errors. But in real life taking a player who has not played a position and all of a sudden expect them to play it is unrealistic. The guy is a catcher. He was moved there because he was god awful as a 3B. Now some of you expect him to just be able to pick up a glove and play 1B at a major league level? Come on. Sure versatility would be great to have with the guy. But there is a reason catchers generally aren’t utility guys. And the same goes why utility guys generally can’t catch. Its not easy. Maybe if he completely gave up catching now and worked solely at 1B in the minors for about a year or so he could be competant enough but to expect him to start taking ground balls on May 13th and be able to handle that position in the major leagues in a couple months is crazy. Theres a reason guys switch positions when they are in the low minors. Because they have plenty of time in a learning environment to work it out so that once they get to the bigs they aren’t making as many errors.

I went to play video games after reading that.

The 3B and LF ideas are silly
but anyone can play 1B and not ruin the team. But I have been saying, ad nauseum, that he needs to be left at catcher 5 days a week for the rest of this season to really give him a chance. Everyone is in such a hurry, slow down. It is NOT time to bring up Davis, Ramirez, Hurley and every other prospect within sniffing distance of Frisco. I can wait until August/September or a trade necessitates to see Ramirez in Arlington even if he’s hitting .500 at the ASB. Leave him alone.
Ditto with Davis. The guy is very young and has plenty of time. If he comes up he’s not very likely to be soooooooo much better than Shelton/Cat that he carries the team to a division title so just relax. The calls for Hurley have ceased since he got off to a rough start, but give him about 3 strong starts in a row and they’ll start again. See you in August, Mr. Hurley, and that’s soon enough for me.
That’s my curmudgeonly rant for the morning.

Well said.

Davis and MaxRam...
I don’t want to see them in Arlington until Sept. as well. However I would like to see them in AAA. Problem is MaxRam should be catching everyday and with TT at OKC there is no room to do that so he probably stays at Frisco until then. Davis should already be at OKC imo. I realize his BB/K ratio is a concern, but it has been better the last couple weeks so that gives me some hope there. I think he is ready for the next level. Davis and Max Ram in Sept. and Hurley in mid-July would be my guess.
Other guys I think we will see include Cruz (I think he will get one last shot), Madrigal ( I think he will probably be a Sept call up as well), Wes, Pirate, Dusty Tits, and maybe even JMJ, but he would really have to continue to hit well at OKC for a Sept. shot.
