MLB Draft Top-10 Mock
Jonathan Mayo, over at MLB.com, has his top-10 mock up and I thought some folks might like to comment on it. I am not a draftnik and so I would be curious who the Rangers might eye at #10 if this were the way things unfold.
1. Rays - Buster Posey, C.
2. Pirates - Pedro Alvarez, 3B.
3. Royals - Eric Hosmer, 1B.
4. Orioles - Brian Matusz, LHP.
5. Giants - Tim Beckham, SS.
6. Marlins - Kyle Skipworth, C.
7. Reds - Aaron Crow, RHP.
8. White Sox - Gordon Beckham, SS.
9. Nationals - Justin Smoak, 1B.
10. Astros - Tanner Scheppers, RHP.

That's pretty much
our worst-case scenario as in that case, Smoak, Hosmer and Scheppers goes right before us.
If I were making the pick, I’d probably at least look at Yonder ALfonso out of Miami, Shooter Hunt out of Tulane or TIm Melville out of High School.
All three has some obvious flaws, but I’d probably go with Melville in the end.

I would be shocked to see Posey at the top.
I can’t see Crow getting past KC. In this scenario, I think the safest pick for the Rangers would be Yonder. But, arguments could be made for Hunter, Friedrich, Melville, Gerrit Cole, or Alex Meyer.

As a Royals fan
I hope they don’t go with Crow. If Posey-Alvarez go 1-2, then I think there’s a very, very good chance they take Tim Beckham.

What is your concern with Crow?
Is it the arm angle or the hitch in his delivery?
Worried about potential injuries?

Yeah. All that
I don’t care for drafting pitchers that high in general. I especially don’t like taking guys with great stuff but very, very mixed track records and mechanical quirks that high. If we were talking about a pick somewhere in the teens this season, I’d be more willing to talk about Crow. But when you’re talking about passing up high ceiling/low risk bats like the Beckhams and Smoak, I can’t justify the fifty/fifty chance that you’re going to be buying Dr Lewis Yokum’s new boat.

Damn
every time I see a mock where Hosmer goes before we pick, I die a little inside.
If we can’t get the Hoss, I’d steer clear of guys like Alanso and Hunter and just go my usual route: High ceiling HS arm.
From the high school pitching side I like Cole, but that’s preliminary. I haven’t done much research as of yet.

Cole
with his demands, there’s talk that he might slip past the 1st round altogether.

Is he demanding
a ML contract or something? I can’t see him falling that far.
...and curse Sir Walter Raleigh, he was such a stupid git.

no ML contract
Just a lot of money, and he isn’t playing up those demands so far this year. He’s got great stuff, but I’d feel better about Melville than Cole at this point.

Both
aren’t really playing like 1st rounders this year.
The best HS pitcher might very well be Brett DeVall (sp?), who’s a late 1st/supplemental type of pick right now.

Matusz
I think that he’s definitely slid further than just to 4. Most of the years, left handers tend to creep up the boards, but this time i can really see matusz falling at least a few more spots.

How the heck do you pronounce his name?
That’s one you really need to hear, cause I’m pretty sure whatever way I choose to say it is going to be wrong.

Ma-toos
At least according to one radio broadcaster this season, who is usually pretty good at getting things like that correct.

why do you think he will fall?
He’s been more consistent than Crow this year, and there is pretty much no question that he and Crow should go before any of the other college guys. Coupled with the dearth of high school pitching in this draft, he should be the first lefty off the board and one of the first two or three pitchers to go.
Matusz is not a soft-tossing lefty who is just high on boards because no one else is around. He’s been a K machine in college against pretty good competition (the WCC isn’t a big name conference, but their baseball holds its own against any conference in the country).
If he were to fall to the Rangers, I’d take him over anyone else who may be out there. He’d be a beast in Arlington. Sadly, there is no way he’ll ever get to us.

If Crow is there
I will be jumping around my room and screaming as if I were on crack with my ass on fire.
... Of course, when the Rangers end up selecting Gerrit Cole instead, I might punch a hole in the wall.
