Four Rangers Lead Their Position in VORP in the AL.
This relates to Adam's post on Rangers Who Hit, and was pointed out to me by someone else. I found it cool in a prideful way.
Four Rangers lead their position in Value Over Replacement Player in the American League: Ian Kinsler 14.1, Michael Young 9.3, Josh Hamilton 15.5 and Milton Bradley 14.8.
I'll be honest, I've been watching the games, but I haven't been keeping track of box scores and results lately (outside of the climbing number of wins). I'm a little (pleasently) surprised by Kinsler. That, again, was something touched on by Adam.
All four are also tops at their positions in Win Shares according to The Hardball Times. Additionally, Gerald Laird ranks 2nd among all AL catchers in their WS system.
Ramon Vasquez also ranks third in VORP among third basemen. Blalock, with all his time missed, ranks 6th. None of this is any sort of surprise (except, to me, Kinsler), but I think it's a nice little badge of pride.

Dude
great news and all, but Vasquez has played 13 games at 3B.
Do people really think he should play ahead of Blalock? I saw that in another thread as well comparing their OPS’s—I think it was horsedooty.

Who thinks he should play ahead of Blalock?
That’s silliness. As pointed out, Blalock has been pretty good, too.
Although, saying Vasquez has only played 13 games only makes producing 8+ runs all the more impressive. But I definitely think Blalock should get his job back.

I don't think
there will be enough time for Blalock to build a lot of trade value before he goes Free Agent.

Huh?
he has 1.75 years, Dan.
...it's the weekend, so why the hell not?

And he has already
been injured this year.
Also, he only has 1.75 years if we pick up the $6.5 million option. If he gets injured again, or fades late in the season again, I’m not sure its worth picking up.

6.5 million
for a very good, still young 3B who could have a lot of trade value next season. In comparison, the Rangers spent 3.8 million on Broussard who was supposed to be a platoon stop gap 1B who might have some decent trade value later in the season.

An injured Blalock
at $6.5 mil might still be preferable to the dross that’s on the FA market next winter at 3B.

The shocker to me
(ahem)
is MY. I realize he has his BA up there again, but power #s? Very pleasant surprise.

If you'd told me MY was going to be doing this well right now back in March, I would have been surprised.
In that way, I am very surprised. He’s making me look real dumb, because I thought he’d just decline even more this year.
However, He doesn’t surprise me much now because I’ve seen him playing well and I’ve followed his numbers. Kinsler I haven’t so much. It seems like he was going along all mediocre, and then, BAM, without noticing he’s switched on the awesome.

It's weird because
offensive numbers are down across the AL. If you just look at their numbers, you won’t be impressed:
OBP/SLG/OPS
MY: .357/.413/.770
Kinsler: .352/.422/.774
Hamilton: .347/.539/.886
Bradley: .426/.549/.975
Bradley is doing great, and Hamilton has been doing well. But Kinsler and MY aren’t exactly setting the world ablaze. I keep waiting for the usual names to start hitting again, with a concurrent drop in MY and Kinsler’s VORP, but I’m starting to wonder if it will ever happen.

I, too, have noticed that.
And so many AL players right now do not compare to the top of the NL. I’m not sure what it is, why it is, or if it will last, but it certainly is interesting.

I don't think
MY’s VORP is gonna drop much. .770 OPS is definitely in the range I would expect. I wouldn’t be surprised to see it climb from there.

This is looking (so far) like a down year in the AL
Which makes Laird’s .750 OPS look pretty good to opposing teams, I hope. Dave Pinto and a few others have had articles lately about the offense. The NL might be passing the AL right now in terms of bats.
