Felix Pie
The Cubs signed Jim Edmonds and demoted Pie to AAA, where he will likely remain for the year barring injury. This is a particularly perplexing move when you consider that Pie was actually hitting better than Edmonds, which is saying something, and is MUCH better defensively at this point. Nonetheless, I live near Chicago and the word around here is that the Cubs have deemed Pie AAAA. I, for one, would love to see him in a Rangers' uniform. Does anyone else like the idea of going after Pie, moving Hamilton to right, platooning Boggs and Murphy in left? Anyone have any idea what it would take to get him at this point?

Well
Everybody needs bullpen arms…
It won’t be Laird though, with the way Soto is playing so far.

Agreed
And, at this point, I think Laird might be overpaying. I wonder if they couldn’t get him for Loe/Littleton/Mendoza etc…

At this point...
...does Loe have ANY value at all?
Right around the time all the young talent is ready to contend is when the organization will realize that Ron Washington is the wrong man for the job.

Pie sucks
The player that is.
We have no need for him. We have like 90 Felix Pie’s in the minors right now

pie is pretty hit and miss, mainly miss
if he can learn how to hit, he has all the tools. but there are so many guys that could never get the hitting part down.
im fine with boggs, murphy, and hamilton until this team is ready to contend

what a difference a couple of months make!
Back when Byrd was being targeted by the Cubs I brought up Pie’s name and a lot of people said he was untouchable. He’s the typical prospect that has the tools but doesn’t have any plate discipline (e.g. Corey Patterson).
Anyway, Pie’s value is not as high as it was two months ago but neither is it that much lower. As long as he has options, the Cubs will keep him (unless a GM is foolish enough to give up something too significant for him). After all, Edmonds is too old to be full-time CF and Reed Johnson is solid but not great.

Pie
The Cubs are really screwing over Pie. They have a great offense, so why not hide Pie in the eight spot, and give him a few hundred AB’s? He has not hurt the Cubs so far, so what’s the big deal? At the very least, he plays a good CF.

We don't need the guy
The outfield situation looks exponentially more solid than it did a few months ago. Murphy and Hamilton should be long-term fixtures, Boggs is holding his own, Mayberry seems to be knocking on the door (although for all we know, this could just be JMJ being JMJ- a ridiculous tear soon to be followed by a horrendous slump). If Bradley’s not dealt, he’s a superstud.

The Cubs are dumbasses when it comes to developing prospects
They did this same thing to Matt Murton. Coming into the year, Pie was deemed an uber-prospect, and now he’s AAAA after just a month and a half? That’s hard to believe.
As for pursuing Pie though, even if we could get him on the (relatively) cheap, I don’t think we really need him. As pointed out above me, we’ve got Borbon and Beltre in the system – what’s the sense in trading away an asset from another area (like bullpen depth) just for Pie?

Not suggesting
that the Rangers should pursue a trade for Pie, but I don’t think we should pencil in Borbon or Beltre into a major league line-up quite yet. Beltre, despite his major league skill set, is only 18 years old and still years away from the majors.
You can never have enough quality CF prospects in a system.

Huh?
That was my point. I clearly stated that I wasn’t trying to suggest the Rangers pursue a trade for Pie. My point, which I guess wasn’t very clear, was that we shouldn’t limit our options in CF going forward just because we have a few promising CF prospects currently playing in Low A and A+.
Hamilton is not going to be our long-term answer in CF and there is a very good chance that Borbon and Beltre don’t reach their projections. It never hurts to have quality CF prospects littered throughout your minor league system.
Again, not advocated for Pie. But, if we had an opportunity to acquire a near ready CF prospect via trade, I wouldn’t be against it.

Huh?
“Hamilton is not going to be our long-term answer in CF “
What makes you say this? While I sorta agree that when Borbon or Beltre reach the majors Hamilton will move to RF but I think if neither of them do make it there is a very good chance he stays out there for the next 7-10 years. Boggs is a natural CF who is a great defender. If Hamilton wasn’t our long term answer in CF then don’t you think while Boggs was up here he would be starting in CF and Hammy in RF?

Hamilton
I don’t think Hamilton will be playing CF in 7-10 years. Don’t get me wrong, I think he is a very solid defensive player but his offensive production has more value to the team and I think the Rangers will move him to RF.
I’d rather see Hamilton in RF where he can utilize his howitzer and save himself from the rigors of playing in CF. Now, even if the physical demands of CF are only a fraction more than RF, I would still prefer to be cautious with Hamilton.
As for Boggs supplanting Hamilton in CF, that could be an option. At the time of Boggs’ call-up, I don’t think he was expected to remain on the 25 for an extended period of time. His performance thus far probably assured himself of a longer stay in the majors than expected and it is possible that the Rangers might give him some playing time in CF. I personally think he is better suited for LF but he is athletic enough to play all OF positions.
So basically, I don’t think Hamilton is the long-term option in CF because of the physical demands of CF and the necessity of his health and offensive production.

Hammy is a corner OF in the making, he plays a very sold CF but i can see him as a COF with a Pie-type in CF as time passes.
Although my take on Pie was that he reminded me of Sori without the power. which scares the crap out of me. i still like him, i wouldnt part with benoit to get him but Jamey Wright? Sure…

Pie and Edinson
it seems like there are some parallels there. rushed up and the sent back and forth. capable of looking dominant in AAA and then lost in the majors.
if a team is a little patient he certainly has all the right tools. I am not sure what the Cubs need, but I would make an offer. if he starts realizing his talent, we could have one of the best OFs in baseball.

Byrd for Pie...
his value has dropped so much do you think we could get away with that deal? I mean if they will sign Edmonds they would have to at least listen to it. Besides, don’t they still need a RH OFer option.

it depends
on what your definition of “value” is. Acquiring Byrd would mean giving up talent. With Edmonds, it’s only money.

pie
I dont really see a need to give up much for him at this point, the outfield doesn’t look too bad as is and theres some good cf prospects in the system.
if they wanted to give him up on the cheap sure, but otherwise no
