Penalty Box
add to the list of penalty box worthy offenses:
1) saying "sample size"
2) saying +1, -1, +2, etc...
3) mentioning chris young (unless he's an opposing pitcher)
4) mentioning DVD
5) being the first to post in a thread for the only purpose of being the first to post
6) mentioning/hinting at a no hitter in progress
7) making fun of vazquez's or cat's stache in their yahoo pics
8) hockey references

soccer
I have to say, the hockey fans do a good job of limiting their discussions to the OT diaries. That is all you can ask
Soccer, on the other hand, manages to creep into far too many baseball discussions. WE DON’T CARE ABOUT LIVERPOOL. I could care less if Hicks ran that team into the ground or won 3 straight championships, or cups, or whatever they are called.
Soccer, not hockey, should be worth a penalty box visit…

Hmmmmm
1) saying “sample size”
What’s wrong with this? If anything, it should be said MORE, not less, since most people around here seem to love the 50 AB sample.
3) mentioning chris young (unless he’s an opposing pitcher)
Darn, what happens if we play Arizona? :O
by Requiem on May 15, 2008 7:23 PM CDT 0 recs
Sample size
people shouldn’t use it unless they know what it means. People use it to argue against any stat they don’t like. Arguing sample size is often the first stage of baseball denial…

Here's the problem with "+1"
You don’t add anything to the conversation.
I find only those who really don’t understand the subject at hand use “+1” to take a side without having to explain themselves.
When Jeff from LL pointed out how ridiculous some of the posting is here and mentioned +1 being a reason, I couldn’t help with agree with him there.
I’m not going to say I add anything to this board, but I see a lot of stupid trends going on here.
“Beastly” is old
“FAIL” is old
“+1” is old
“Rally Turtle” still works, but only for DShep’s original picture.
Internet trends are lame. Be original, please.
and here: -1. Now you don’t have to do it!
by cmkelly29 on May 16, 2008 11:21 AM CDT 0 recs
I'll take the bait
First, you can easily gloss over comments that only add ”+ or -” and that does not rob you of much time or effort. This is in contrast to massive blocks of text that some people choose to use, which take a lot of your time to read and filter through, which turn out to add nothing themselves, often times.
Second, this is a message board where tons and tons of varied opinions are tossed about, so couldn’t you envision a scenario where somebody posts a well-thought comment and they are curious as to how it would be received? Granted, a + / – isn’t absolutely necessary for you to evaluate your own comment, but I can’t see the harm in noticing your post has been met with agreement / disagreement.
Thirdly, it’s a nice subject headline, if nothing else, because it can lead into a related comment. If you don’t like the initial post, and you see it followed by a +1 response, that is a good indicator that you probably shouldn’t read that follow-up post. While -1, is a simple way to say you disagree, but I don’t see how you have to “explain” while taking a side. Often times, that would be the true redundance: explaining something that is often implicit in the side you are taking. There is latent rationale in every post, imo, I don’t see why time needs to be wasted if others can’t read between the lines.
Fourthly, so Jeff @ LL is the standard of approval that we are shooting for on LSB?
PLEASE.
Lastly, it’s funny that people are picking things out that they don’t like on this blog. I highly doubt every poster here is perfectly happy with the way every other poster expresses their opinions and the idiosyncrasies embedded in them. We could spend days and days and still have things to bitch about in diaries like this one.

It's unnecessary...
That’s really it.
Agree, and follow up. I’d rather read why someone agrees with something. If you’re only going to say “+1,” then there is really no point in even replying.
No, Jeff is not the standard of approval. I’m just saying I agree with him. “+1” for Jeff on that issue, I guess.

I don’t think there’s too many rules as far as expressing one’s opinion is concerned.
Not that I’m going to stop or anything, but I would be willing to gleefully point out everything “unnecessary” that is expressed on here, bandwidth permitting.

In reality
...NONE of the conversation here is necessary. The universe is a dark, cold expanse of nothingness. The concept of time and space cannot be truly understood by the human mind, but one thing’s for sure: we are very little more than nothing. Entire generations of homo sapiens are born, live and die in a very small space in a very short amount of time.
None of us are special. We live our lives as if we were ants, but we have the self-awareness to enjoy the misery we create for ourselves.
