Interesting quote from Kasey Kiker
When asked about pitching deeper into games:
Kiker: Yeah, I’m comfortable. I want to go deeper and deeper as the season goes on. I know Nolan Ryan wanted us to start throwing more and finish the games ourselves.
From the excellent www.rangers.scout.com and Jason Cole.

I really
like that they are starting to let pitchers throw more in the minors but at the same time it scares the shit out of me. I really don’t want a guy like Kiker or Hunter (who has already thrown 50+ innings) injured.

I’m not sure what to make of Nolan’s statements about pitch counts. On the one hand, its a good idea if a particular starter is pitching well, but on another, we don’t want to Dusty Baker our pitching staff. Now that his philosophy is reaching down into our prospects, the most precious things we have right now, it worries me a little.

Pitch counts
I have mixed feelings about pitch counts. I’m not sold on the assumption that throwing too many pitches always causes arm injuries.
When I pitcher gets tired, he often alters his throwing motion thus increasing the risk of arm injury. High pitch counts often lead to fatigue and mechanical inconsistencies. But not always.
Some pitchers have no trouble throwing 120+ pitches a game. I just don’t understand how a guy like Nolan or a guy like Byleven could throw 150+ pitches every 5th game and not suffer the arm damage that is now automatically blamed on high pitch counts. I just don’t get it. Perhaps these guys were just freaks but in eras past, it was the norm to take the ball and pitch a high volume.
Some have even suggested that today’s pitchers don’t throw enough on the side. Who knows? Somebody dig up some Dr. Mike Marshall.

I totally agree. I think pitchers “baby” themselves too much.

It is very interesting
I know that entering tonight, Tommy Hunter led all of minor league baseball in innings pitched by four or five innings. I plan on talking to him sometime in the near future about it.

How many innings
did he throw last year? It seems like he’s on a pace to go well above whatever it was. Are they worried about too big a bump?

Chris Davis
Now 4 for 4 with 3 doubles, plus a walk.
Ben Harrison is 3 for 4 with a GS.

Beastly
When does Davis get promoted to OKC? At this point, I really don’t think he’s got much left to prove in Frisco…

He can work on that in OKC too
At this point, I think it might be wise to challenge him a little. Not meaning that we should rush him, but the guy is destroying the Texas League…

If we're going to let
Nate Gold hold back a prospect, we’re officially f*ed.
Gold is good old fashioned orginizational filler. No more, no less.
If Davis is ready and management thinks he needs to see AAA, Gold should get a pat on the back and maybe a nice parting gift, end of story.

Well you are probably right
but I thought Davis would start the season at OKC but still hasn’t been promoted so they probably asked him to work on something (presumably his K/BB ratio). Or he may end up totally skipping Triple A, which would not be the worst thing considering what I remember C.J. saying about Triple A.

Basically
there are alot of AAAA player in AAA and some are jealous of the success a prospect might be having and may try to sabotage his success.
Can’t find the exact post becasue his account was deleted but he said something along that line.

walks
sure i want the guy to walk more, but its not like hes pulling a jose lopez or a 2007 pudge rodriguez here.
he does have 12. Hamilton has 4 more walks in 17 more at bats.
granted that his current rates still make him very hard to project in the mlb.
Gerald Laird is my hero.

that's the problem with reading stats
go watch him play for about 5-6 games and see if you stil think that’s an issue
he’ll walk if and when he needs to do so

Whittleman
after a slow start, he’s putting together a good season (.863 OPS) at Bakersfield. Lots of strikeouts, though.

I heard on the Clinton archived broadcast that Gac was hit by a foul ball into the dugout.
Didn’t sound serious. Just a day off to deal with a bruise, apparently.

Frisco Outfield
Ben Harrison, Steve Murphy and to a lesser extent, Dustin Majewski have all played well this year. Legitimate prospects or no?
by Butters on May 15, 2008 11:38 PM CDT 0 recs
Yes and no.
I’d rank them like you mentioned them. They all have a shot to play in the Majors at some point, but I’m not sure any of them are regulars. Harrison is intriguing. He dominated Double-A two years ago and he’s doing it again. Last year was sort of an aberration because, as he told me, he was suffering from a complication from the shoulder injury, but at his age (25, at the time), he didn’t want to risk losing a full year.
I was talking to Mike Hindman about it recently and he mentioned something interesting. He said that Harrison probably proved something to the org. by fighting through the injury all season giving his injury-riddled past and frequent trips to the DL.
Harrison has legit power and he’s definitely a prospect to watch.

Thanks for the scoop Jason.
I had all but given up on Harrison to be honest. But seeing what he has done this year has definitely caused me to sit up and take notice. Hopefully his injury issues are in the past and we get to see what this kid can really do.

No Ks for a week, not since 5/9.
It’s the same week news emerged that Max Ram was taking grounders at 1B.
Coincidence?

Seems like this is about the time of year last year that CD went on his 35-game hitting streak
in Bakersfield. Does anyone remember the dates? Too bad MILB or minors.baseball-reference.com do not have game logs, except the last 10 games.
I found some notes on rotoworld. It was late June through mid July.

Don't know, but
he does seem to be hitting a stride, and his K-rate has dropped dramatically of late. I think a month from now Ramirez will be playing 2nd fiddle to the Davis hype again.
