Josh Howard deal imminent?

Hearing Rick Carlile talk about "roster changes" that will take place, people figured something big would happen.

"It sounds as though June, July and August will be busy, too, with rumblings already in circulation about the Mavs hoping they can work their way into the sign-and-trade mix for either Miami's Shawn Marion or Atlanta's Josh Smith. ESPN.com"

They are likewise bound to be linked in trade speculation to Indiana's Jermaine O'Neal, given O'Neal's successes playing for Carlisle and amid a growing anticipation in Dallas that swingman Josh Howard (after last month's marijuana monologues) and former Carlisle go-to guy Jerry Stackhouse (who only has one year and $2 million guarantee for 2009-10 left on his contract) will be offered in various trade scenarios. ESPN.com

Carlile made it pretty clear that big changes would be made, and made it sound like Howard would be the one to go..

I like the idea of Jermaine O'neal, we could get more athletic by putting him at center.

I also like the idea of getting Josh Smith, talk about an athletic upgrade...

Also,

””As part of nearly 40 minutes on the dais to detail his plans as Johnson’s successor, Carlisle shared how he’s already lobbied his former top gunner in Indiana to come out of retirement next season to sign in Dallas at 43. Yet it sounds as though Carlisle won’t get any farther than Boston did last summer, given that TNT’s Reggie Miller texted him back with this message: “Man, you’re crazy.” ESPN.com”

Damnit

I read it as Josh Hamilton and thought we might be locking him up through arbitration or more.

Instead it’s stupid basketball talk.

Josh Hamilton

is already under club control through a lot of years…

But it's become the in-vogue thing

to lock up guys, even under control, for a number of years, especially if you can get a decent rate for the arbitration years or the first few FA eligible seasons.

Which is excellent for baseball

and owners a-like. I would think this could drive down salary averages.

Let’s just hope we don’t get extension complaints and hold-outs as bad as the NFL has it.

I've never gotten

All the JO love. He’s a nice player, but he’s never been a good fit here, because he has value at PF, and much less at C. Dirk can’t go a whole season at 5, nor should he. A backup center, and a starting 2 are the biggest needs.

by brettgardner on May 16, 2008 12:19 AM CDT   0 recs

O'neal

would be put at center. With the more athletic centers in this conference, it would would out nice…

I think a second scorer is the biggest need

If it comes in the form of bringing in Jermaine O’Neal to play as an undersized center next to Dirk, then so be it… though I don’t like the idea of pinning all your hopes on a malingerer like JO.

If it comes in the form of a swing man, even better, since I think Dampier and whoever we can get off the free agent scrap heap to back him up will make a fine center combo.

The bottom line is that Dirk needs scoring help. Terry can’t create his own shot, and Howard can, but has decided he no longer wants to do so.

Well

I agree, but it’s not just anybody we need. It’s specifically a SG. Obviously if we trade Howard then we have another hole at 3, but the fact that we can’t make opposing 2s pay ever, combined with the fact that don’t have enough size at the position if you mashed Stack, Terry and Jones into a large doughball of mediocre shit, means that we desperately need a real 2.

I’d settle for a Josh Childress type, but he’s certainly not the 2nd option you need, so you’d still have to add that elsewhere.

Other guys I’d like:

Ronnie Brewer
Rip Hamilton
Marco Belinelli
Thabo Sefolosha
Kareem Rush
John Salmons
Francisco Garcia

Some are more likely than others, of course.

by brettgardner on May 16, 2008 12:59 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Childress would make us a lot more athletic

and is a good two-way player, imo.

I think he would be a more realistic target if the team managed to acquire Redd, somehow.

Francisco Garcia

by a LONG shot. what would it take to get him? the guy scores, hits 3s, a little bit of rebounding and assisting, blocks shots, steals, and is a very good athlete.

trade Howard for Josh Smith if they’ll do it, and get a hold of Garcia and I’d call it a day. something tells me Atlanta wouldn’t do that though…and really, Howard slipping for a month doesn’t concern me. I’d just rather have Josh Smith

There is nothing

in any of those articles that say a deal could be imminent. In fact, it’s all speculation.

The point

is that the Mavs want to move Howard and these are some possible players we could get in return.

imminent in this usage

would mean there are active and semi confirmed rumors that a deal is close to being made and there is some real reason to believe it could be going down in a few days to a week.

like how the jason kidd deal was imminent right before the all star break, but just a rumor before that.

Gerald Laird is my hero.

Umm

Carlisle never said one thing to make anyone think that Josh was going to be traded. He talked at length about him being part of the core, about how hard he’s going to work with Josh, what level he wants him to be at, etc. etc.

I’m not saying Josh won’t be traded this offseason, it’s certainly possible. But you are completely misrepresenting what Carlisle has said in multiple interviews and his press conference.

Hmm.

I want Ron Artest. Then I want to sign Diop, who is a FA. Diop has already said he wants to return to Dallas. I also want to spend part of our mid-level on Michael Petrus.

I don’t want Jermain O’Neal, he gets hurt way too much in the easy East, imagine him trying to stay healthy in the West.

I would be interested in Shawn Marion, he seems like he could flourish alongside Jason Kidd.

We are trying to win a title next year…I’m not sure if Smith can take us to the next level.

A trio of Dirk, Kidd and Artest/Marion gives us a chance if everything goes right.

by Agreen07 on May 16, 2008 2:24 AM CDT   0 recs

i disagree

i still dont see artest or marion as a legit #2 scorer to dirk. artest puts up just as many bad shots as josh howard does and marion would be a good fit with kidd but is not a legit #2 scoring option.

in all honesty, i think their window has closed unless they can pull off a miracle.

by kumizi on May 16, 2008 6:27 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

i do think...

...that artest is under-rated… besides, between him and brandon bass, i don’t think anyone would be ‘effin with dirk….

the rangers have a better chance of winning the world series before the mavs win a title.

But I don’t know, the earliest I see the Rangers contending is 2011.

The Mavs still have a chance next year with the right moves.

I'm sorry, but you're way off on that one

the Mavs have an MVP, the best PG of this century (declining though he may be), and other than the past month of the season an All Star SF that can play both ways very effectively. they have one of the best 6th men in the league (Jason Terry) who shouldn’t have to start, a very effective starting center (please don’t tell me you miss Shawn Bradley and Calvin Booth), and a very good rising, explosive backup in Brandon Bass and two very decent backups in Malik Allen and Antoine Wright (who might be close to taking the next step towards consistent minutes). Surround that with the right pieces – a starting SG with size, athleticism and a good outside shot, a backup center that can get the job done (Diop), and a few more defensive wizards that can score if necessary (Seibutis, Reshawn Terry). Basically, they’re two players away from being a favorite again in the West, and only one of those players will be somewhat difficult to acquire.

The Rangers meanwhile are riding a hot streak and taking some advantage of recent slides by the california teams. but don’t think for a second that this patchwork pitching staff is going to hold together throughout the season. we have to rely on Millwood and McCarthy to come back healthy and stay healthy, Padilla to keep his head, Gabbard to stay off the DL, and either Ponson or Feldman to keep up the good work or Hurley, AJ Murray or Mendoza (yuck) to catch fire if called upon. I think THAT is a lot to ask in and of itself. THen there’s the offense – can Milton Bradley and Josh Hamilton stay healthy? What’s the story with Laird/Saltalamacchia? What about Hank, can he stay healthy, and is he going to move to 1st for good now, opening the door for Duran/Vazquez to lock down 3rd? If so, Duran’s got to step up a bit at the plate. What about Boggs – can he keep hitting at the major league level?

Please tell me after reading all of that you agree that you are a little off on your proclomation…while the Rangers have a lot more promise on the farm club, that’s unproven promise, and it’s going to take some time to adjust. Dallas may not have much in future picks, but if they can’t get it done this next year in the playoffs, they get Kidd’s 20 million off the books, plus Finley and Bradley will be fresh off as well, and we can trade Stack’s contract to free up space. Maybe even Terry’s. Maybe even Howard’s. So basically, at the end of the day, we’ve freed up a TON of cap space, and who wouldn’t want to sign with the Mavs for high dollars to play for a Cuban-owned team (takes care of his players) and alongside an MVP in Dirk?

no, No, NO

no shawn marion. he was in the PERFECT situation, with a chance to win a title. and he blew it. way too immature, way too selfish. if I had one player to take off that Miami team, as funny as it sounds after I just said “immature” and “selfish” in the same sentence, it would be Ricky Davis: He would be cheap, has the size and athleticism to be a perfect SG in our system, can score at will, hit the 3, rebound and assist very well, and will even play defense very well when motivated. which is what Carlisle’s job is – right? to motivate?

no ron artest. he has taken every team he’s been a part of from playoff contender to absolute mess: Chicago was never there with him there, Indiana went from a Finals competitor to out of the playoffs all because of him, and Sacramento made the playoffs with him his first year there and failed miserably the second year. if I can have one player off that team, it’d definitely be Francisco Garcia, who should be MUCH cheaper, younger and much more motivated

Good RIdance to Stackhouse

He showed in the playoffs that he i s well past the age where he could contribute solidly despite throwing up horrible shots. But if we do get O’Neal, somethings going to have to be done with Dampier because I doubt Cuban has going to have contracts together worth over $100 million through the life of the contracts at the center position to go along with the $20 million of Kidd for one year and the one well deserved contract on the roster, Dirk’s.

we need a pure shooter, like Utah did with Korver…

by Longhorn on May 16, 2008 9:49 AM CDT   0 recs

JJ Redick sucks at everything

You want a nice JJ Reddick story?

When I was in Orlando I ran into him one day in a Best Buy.

First of all, he’s not very tall. 6-2 or maybe 6-3.

Secondly he was hanging around in the video game aisle and I saw him look through the racks, pick up a game with him on the cover, look it over for a few second, then smile like he was the shit and say “oh, yah”. Then he put the game down and walked out. Which means he drove all the way to Best Buy just so he could look at his video game and say “oh, yah”. Which is even funnier when you realize that he probably has a copy of that game at his home. So he must’ve gotten tired of sitting around his house looking at his video game and saying “oh, yah”, and decided to go out to Best Buy so he could look at his video game and say “oh, yah” in a more public setting.
