Matt Holliday available?
Per MLBTR and Ken Rosenthal...Matt Holliday could become available in a "Tex" type of trade (1 year+ left on the contract), if the Rockies continue to struggle...
With the way the Rangers are playing...would you trade prospects for him and sign him long-term???
Me...I would definitely! An outfield of Holliday in LF, Hamilton in CF, and Bradley in RF/DH, with Murphy rotating...pretty nice sounding and definitely would help in 09, 10, and 11...

would you?
Would you trade the same package we received for Tex to the Rox for Holliday? That’s likely what it would take. Unless the Rangers were in first place in mid-June, I would not.

I also started salivating
Pavlov style at the thought of Holliday filling out the Rangers revamped OF and providing protection for Hamilton for the next several years. And the Rockies are said to be looking at lower level prospects to avoid a 40 crunch in the near future. But here’s the thing. While Holliday is from OK and might be willing to sign here long term in the money was right, he is still a Boras client, so he will almost surely test the market.
If we can get some assurance that he is willing to negotiate on a long term deal before he hits the market (remember, it is not only that Tex was a Boras client, it was that Tex was tired of Texas and wanted out), then I would at least kick the tires. A deep farm system doesn’t do any good if the team is not willing to leverage it in an advantageous situation. But to waste our prospects on a rental, I would hate to see that happen.

Nope
Talk to me in 2 years if an Upton caliber player is available with 1+ left.

not sure
what you mean. If those letters had been CO, I would have followed. But are hitters historically better in the NL. Do they struggle with the acclimation to the AL?

NL is
much easier on pitchers.
whether that is ballpark, no DH, and just better teams and players.

It's the no DH thing
but I really don’t see how that translates to a hitter’s performance.
What has happened with Bradley and Hambone then I wonder? Both are hitting as well (or better) here than in the NL.
Seriously. Explain this “theory” to me.

No
He will cost too much, especially in terms of pitching.

Seriously...
Who was that last Rockies pitcher that we were thinking about trading good prospects for in the past?
Oh yeah, Jason Jennings…

I might not like the expression..
but I won’t deny that I find revenge best served quick, yet cold. Not to mention, I’m really only poking fun at him, after he told me to “F off.”

if you can sign him...
If you can get it done (like Johan) where you negotiate it and can get him signed, then yes I would trade a bunch of lower prospects to get Holliday. He would absolutely MASH here.

and...
I have no problems paying for him…he’ll actually give you meaningful hits, unlike Tex.
by 8legs2fangs on May 16, 2008 12:41 PM CDT 0 recs
I do
I’m not all that interested in paying $20 million per year for Holliday’s early 30s.
Very good player. Not someone to sell the farm and pay superstar money long-term for.
And I’m not sure why Teixeira wouldn’t give you meaningful hits.

Yup
You don’t even consider it unless Holliday puts you over the top for the year and a bit he has left on his deal, or if you think you can actually resign him. Neither scenario is applicable in our case.
Plus, could you imagine what it would take for us to get him?

Holliday
Not that I’m advocating trading for him but is Holliday not the best hitting OF in baseball? I know he plays in Colorado but it’s no longer the inflater it has been in the past. I really don’t know much about his defense but LF isn’t exactly a position you need a premium defender at.

Not the best hitting OF
though he’s up there I guess. Right now Quentin might be the going the best, and McClouth in Pittsburgh gets my vote as the guy no one is talking about but should be.
...and curse Sir Walter Raleigh, he was such a stupid git.

It's a good idea because the trade has worked out so well for the Braves?
I’d have to think about it a bit more.

garrett atkins
That article mentions Atkins as a possibility for a trade and he is having a great season so far. If in another couple of weeks to a month we are still in the middle of the al west standings, what would you give up for a year and half of atkins and put him at first base?

by oc on May 16, 2008 2:00 PM CDT 0 recs
No...
1) he would cost the Rangers a lot of good prospects when this is a young rebuilding team.
2) His is a great player, but not worth the salary he will get when he hits the FA market.
3) His agent is Boras so a extension before he hits the FA market is not likely.

As several people have said above
Why would we trade the Rox a Tex-type package for one player? That would pretty much reverse the entire direction this team is going, and send us back to trying to compete with a couple superstar players, and a patch-job filling out the rest of the team.
So if the Rox really are trying to sell Matt Holliday: NO, thank thanks anyway, and goodbye.

so what would we have to give up?
because I’d have to know that first…
if it’s Boggs, Hurley, Whittleman and Hunter would I do it? probably if we can guarantee that he signs a 5 year deal
if it’s Davis, Main, Feliz and Borbon I don’t think I would
Kinsler-Young-Hamilton-Holliday-Bradley-Blalock-Davis-Saltalamacchia-Boggs/Murphy would look PRETTY freakin sweet for the next 4-5 years (until Andrus, Teagarden, MaxRam, JMJ, etc. make the next step…)
