John Mayberry Jr. at 1st base
Finally! I know that everyone wants to see Chris Davis at 1st, and with Max Ramirez taking 1st base practice he's obviously also in the consideration for the 1st base job, but JMJ is playing very well as of late. Even with the game that Chris Shelton played today, I think that Mayberry definitely has a more than slight chance of getting a good look with the Rangers pretty soon. Junior went 2-3 in today's game and hit a homer. Sorry if this has been discussed in another thread.

I have seen them both play
I saw Mayberry play first base several times while he was at Stanford and I have seen Davis play first base as well. Davis isn’t a butcher at first, but Mayberry is much smoother. No one is saying Mayberry is a better prospect, just that he is a .better defensive first baseman,

Mayberry
played first base his entire life until the Rangers drafted him. The scouting reports of him in college all said he was a very good first baseman. The reason he was moved to the outfield is because first base is generally saved for players who are not athletic enough to play elsewhere. Mayberry is a freak athletically so they put him in the outfield. Combine his height + athleticism + experience at the position and you find out that he is a better first baseman than Davis.

Who said he was excellent?
Nobody in this thread.
Im sure more people like myself are really just curious why you have a guy who you have all but declared is your 1B of the future and yet you are giving other good propsects time at the same position. If Davis was in A ball or a few years away I could understand but seeing as how he is legitimately only a few months away from being ready to be called up to the big leagues why you are taking guys who are also almost ready for the bigs and playing them there. Do the Rangers plan on moving Davis again? I hope not. I think moving from position to position can stunt a players development. Mayberry seems to be finding “it” and so why would you all of a sudden move him even if it is back to a position he is familiar with?

mayberry
why not have another option at 1b?
heres the situation:
say you call up JMJ 2 months before davis, you (clearly) want to get him as many AB’s as possible, why not put him in at 1b? would you rather see catt at 1b and JMJ on the bench?
...come on, what does it hurt. its one thing if hes taking AB away from davis now, but hes NOT.
anyway what happens if davis (knock on wood) has a career ending injury (or something along those lines).
so your reasoning is that we shouldnt have doug mathis in the AAA rotation because blake beavan is also in the minors? because hes one of our “SP of the future” and mathis isnt?
...bad logic.

options are fine
To clarify my position I am not against him taking practice at 1B or anything. I do have concerns about JMJs development due to switching positions. It probably won’t be as dificult since he has played alot of 1B in the past. My main concern is that they are going to move Davis again and it will only delay his arrival here in Arlington.
Your example is a bad one. Position players and pitchers are completely different. A Starter can turn into a reliever much easier than a infielder to outfielder. Plus the sheer numbers of pitchers a team carries is greater than any one position in the field. Also beavan is a few years away from arriving. Like I said if Davis was in that position this wouldn’t be a big deal but since he, JMJ, and Ramirez are all on very similar timelines as far as arriving in Arlington goes, it does make me wonder why they have all three taking defensive practice at that position. It makes me wonder even more since before this season started they practically said Davis is the 1B of the future.

you DO realize
that the odds of one of them becoming a future star at 1b are TINY, right?

have....
you seen him play? Not sure why he is considered that bad!! It is first base for gods sake all we need him to do it hit and play a decent 1b!! I would just like to see our 1b not bat 9th or 8th in the lineup anymore!!

Not significant
I think they just wanted to give Gold a partial rest, he was at DH.

Nope...
The Rangers have apparently decided that they want JMJ to get reps at 1B.
Also, Joaquin was pulled from the starting lineup when his shoulder stiffened on him. What’s the deal with shoulders this year anyway?

JMJ
No, they are in Memphis so I was listening on the radio and Jim said that. He said the Rangers had been talking about it for a while but have now decided that they want JMJ to have some time at first. He didn’t say how often it would happen, but the impression he gave was that it came directly from the Rangers.
Hi Rodney! It seems like he won’t ever be healthy…he’s hitting pretty well but he does not look like himself in the field yet….he’s getting nothing on his throws.
Speaking of hitting pretty well, Jim actually introduced Drew as the “hot hitting Drew Meyer.” If I had Dan Cahill’s e-mail I would have saved it and e-mailed it to him! :-) LOL

Bev is right.
Arias looks like he has nothing on his throws right now, even for a second baseman.

Good to see
the local Okie yokels like Drew, he will probably be there the rest of his career, before being a Home Depot stockboy.

JMJ...
not sure what to make of him getting some time at 1B now.
Does this mean Davis won’t be promoted anytime soon? Or are they just keeping their options open. If Davis went to OKC (which I hope to see soon) you bump Gold and have a OF of Cruz, Ellison, Mayberry, and Botts as DH.
Not sure why the Rangers would choose to move him back to 1B for some playing time now. The timing is just odd with Davis sitting there waiting after moving him over to 1B.

why not give yourself another option
at 1b?

I think it's your second option
They have five OFs that they like pretty well if/when Bradley can play out there, especially with the defense that guys like Boggs and Murphy provide in the corners. They have no long term 1B solution on the roster right now, and both Mayberry and Davis are pretty high ceiling/low floor guys. Most of us here like Davis better I think, but I’m not ready to call him up, and Mayberry is doing fine in AAA after all. Big picture, I don’t think that Mayberry’s bat will be every day 1B worthy, but I can’t see any issue with this move.

basically for this year in the OF we have a TON of guys
hamilton
bradley
murphy
catt.
byrd
boggs
+ JMJ at some point this year.
too many, WHY not try to get JMJ some more AB over the rest of the season (if hes in the majors) at 1b?

JMJ
He is not on the 40 man roster so to assume he will play in the majors this year may be premature. Before this year he had some pretty major question marks and although he has played wonderfully so far in both AA and AAA I don’t know it is a certainty he gets added to the 40 and called up this year.
by bigsteve on May 17, 2008 2:51 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
It may not be a certainty
but he does have to go on after the year anyway, so it’s really only a matter of how much it crunches the roster during the season.

The 40 trumps all!!!
