Volquez

So someone please explain to me outside of his whip and k/bb why Volquez era will be below 4 for the rest of the year if he doesn't improve those categories?

Discuss....

Oh and I expect some graphs.

What...

..is the difference between a “fanshot” and a “fanpost”? That question is for everybody.

No idea

but we should have never traded Volquez. How is it that we keep the only part of the DVD that sucks? Wanna put someone in the penalty box?????

Put JD in the penalty box!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Who should they have traded

to get the best CF to ever put on a Ranger uniform? Do you really think Volquez is going to be that good for an entire season? Do you really think he’s Bob Gibson-like?

...and curse Sir Walter Raleigh, he was such a stupid git.

I was joking around

of course I’m happy with Hamilton. It is unfortunate though that Volquez and Danks are doing so well, while we have Diamond.

got ya

I’m never sure if someone is joking about this kind of stuff.

God

I would love for Diamond to come back and win the Cy Young in ‘10 just to shut up forevermore all the DVD talk.

Diamond

I’ll settle for him being old school Eric Gagne-like.

volquez

he’s a two pitch starter in the NL who most likely wont keep it up for the whole season …...on the other hand i wish we still had Danks though!

mmm

danks = delicious.

and yet

his catcher, other hitters, his manager, other managers all beg to differ with you

What are they supposed to say?

Boy, this guy has good stuff, but he’s really a two pitch pitcher with unsustainable ERA because of his average peripherals?

I’m not sure you’ll see anyone in the great baseball fraternity say that. Except maybe John Bannister.

by FirebatM3 on May 18, 2008 1:29 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Average peripherals

I am not a “stat geek” by any stretch so could you explain what peripherals of his are average?

by DaheelzCM on May 18, 2008 1:35 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Many

BB/9, the disproportionate HR rate vs. FB rate (3.0% right now, that’s unsustainable), the 90.8% LOB, BABIP, even the 1.26 WHIP.

The only thing that looks great about Eddy is that huge K rate.

by FirebatM3 on May 18, 2008 1:51 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I wouldn't say that.

That 54.9% GB rate is awfully good (though who knows if he can keep that up).

And having a huge K rate is a good indicator of success. Especially, since he’s shown this ability before.

Even if you adjust his HR/FB rate and LOB rate, his expected ERA is 3.46, NOT above 4.00.

That’s pretty darn good.

He has two great pitches

But that breaking ball has come along. I’ll just say that I wish I could be as cavalier about expecting him to fall off as you are. I mean he will obviously slip some, but I’m not sure why we should expect his stuff to cause him to drop.

by Brett Perryman on May 18, 2008 1:14 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

It's not his stuff...

it’s the results so far from his stuff. He’s throwing up a ridiculous era with an “ok” 1.26 whip and not that spectacular of other numbers besides a good amount of k’s.

Basically what I’m saying is if he doesn’t improve his stuff, he won’t be so fortunate. I’d expect a 3.5-4.5 era the rest of the year if his peripherals don’t improve.

by slimshadty12 on May 18, 2008 2:17 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

eddy

An ERA of 4.00 for the rest of the season would give him an ERA of about 3.25 for the year, probably 18-20 wins, and a shot at the the NL Cy Young. If that happens, it’s not bad for a guy who started off last season in single A.

Danks

I forget that McCarthy is still around. Maybe he’ll finally turn the corner. Maybe.

by northtexan95 on May 18, 2008 1:29 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

McCarthy

for him to turn the corner, he is going to have to be able to stay healthy and get some velocity back on his fastball. When he was in the minors he apparently threw low to mid 90s. Last season he was in the mid 80s for most of his starts. He has the size to throw harder, so hopefully his velocity was down last year due to injuries and will bounce back when/if he is healthy.

Big Mac

I’m starting to think TJ surgery is a question of when, not if.

Agree.

Not trying to be pessimistic but thats what it seems like.

Well

They did a few MRIs earlier this year, and have repeatedly said there isn’t ligament damage.

by Adam J. Morris on May 18, 2008 4:48 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

true

But I feel like a string of elbow-related problems often leads to TJ surgery eventually. Seems like Thomas Diamond had an elbow-related red flag or two before he finally had to go under the knife.

McCarthy

I’m not sure if he is seriously injured (and will need TJ) or if he is just a pitcher that always has something non-serious wrong with him that prevents him from pitching well. He was always healthy in the minors so it is not like he has always been injury prone, but it has been one injury after another since we got him. I still think he will be a good pitcher if he is ever healthy, but I never liked the trade and Danks’ pitching this year, combined with McCarthy’s ineffectiveness+injuries are not making me dislike it any less.

by uthornfan on May 18, 2008 4:55 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

McCarthy

He hasn’t really been all that ineffective. With the exception of April last season, he’s been pretty good, although he has been injured often, obviously.

McCarthy

I heard that he and Jason Jennings are taking groundballs at 1B with everyone else in the organization while they are on the DL.

Volquez'

ERA if he was on the Rangers…

Over/under 4.00?

Well under.

Probably just a little higher than it is now, but it’s not useful to wonder about such things.

It’s a trade that worked for both sides. I was always very high on Volquez, but hey, you can’t have everything. The Rangers got an elite hitter who plays a premium position at a very high level. And if he stays healthy he’ll probably play in almost five times the number of games that a starting pitcher would in any given year. If Hamilton were a 1B or something it would be a little harder to swallow if Volquez goes onto be a Cy Young type guy, but that’s not the case. He’s like a young Barry Bonds or Ken Griffey, Jr.: power, speed, average, OBP, defense.
