With all the depth in the minor leagues and the knowledgeable fanbase we have here at LSB,  I thought it  would be a good idea if each poster names a prospect from the Rangers and dubbs them "their" guy. Obviously jparks77 would be Harrison, LSJ would be Salt HurlerHurley (Is he still around?) would be Hurley etc.  I don't know, I'm bored this might be a failed bit, but we'll see what happens.

Zach Phillips is my guy by the way.

I've said it for a while...

Nothing would be sweeter than for Madrigal to save a couple of games against the Angels late in the season to put the Rangers in the playoffs, or at least keep LAAAAAAA out. Not just because we love to hate LAAAAAAAAAAA anyway, but because it would be that much funnier to do it with a guy we stole from them because they were idiots.

I hope the Red Sox

WS rings don’t hurt JD’s back as they pat him there for pulling one nice trade off on them during a season in which they won one of those rings.

by badradiorules on May 19, 2008 2:12 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Do you think they care?

They won the World Series

by badradiorules on May 19, 2008 2:52 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Sure they won it...

...do you think they won it because of Gagne, despite Gagne, or while barely remembering they had Gagne?

Right around the time all the young talent is ready to contend is when the organization will realize that Ron Washington is the wrong man for the job.

by Chad Crudup on May 19, 2008 2:55 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Does it matter?

So, they gave up Gabbard. Nice player for the Rangers. Where would he fit in Boston when everyone is fully healthy? So, they gave up Murphy. Nice player for the Rangers. Where would he fit in for the Red Sox when everyone is healthy? Fifth outfielder? So, they gave up a very toolsy teenage outfielder with a very high ceiling and a very low basement. If everything goes perfect, he’ll be a star for us in 2012-2014.

Again, wonderful trade if you are a Ranger fan, like I am. However, I doubt that the Red Sox are taking time away from enjoying their WS victories to lament the fact that Engel Beltre is hitting .260 in Clinton.

by badradiorules on May 19, 2008 3:03 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

As long as you acknowledge...

...that it’s a great trade for the Rangers then I guess we have no real argument.

But I will say this: just because you don’t have a place for a young player in your lineup doesn’t mean it’s OK to undervalue him in a trade. That kind of thinking led to the Rangers giving away Adrian Gonzalez as a “throw-in” to SD when they felt he was blocked by Teixeira.

Right around the time all the young talent is ready to contend is when the organization will realize that Ron Washington is the wrong man for the job.

by Chad Crudup on May 19, 2008 3:08 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Plus with their luck

they’re gonna grab a studly stud with the 44th pick in a few weeks.

You know, the one they got as compensation for Gagne.

It’s funny that when we make a trade for a pending FA we all love to talk about how smart it was because we get draft picks out of it. (Cough, Carlos Lee, Cough, Cough) But no one ever seems to remember that when we trade a pending FA, you’re giving up a likely draft pick.

If we hadn’t dealt Mahay and Gagne we’d have the 40th and 44th picks this year. Not saying that I’d rather have those picks than the players we got in trade, but it’s something to consider when weighing the value of trade from each team’s perspective.

The 40 trumps all!!!

by thedirkatron on May 19, 2008 3:32 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

That's tough

I think for sure you’d rather have Murphy, Gabbard and Beltre than that 44th pick. Maybe just Beltre is better than that 44th pick as some have said that he’d be a top 10 pick if he were in the draft (not sure about that though). And you’re right, whoever they take with that pick will somehow become an All-Star.

It’s tough to tell which is better sometimes. How much did Mahay add to that deal for the Braves? Did he get Jones thrown in? Clinch getting Harrison? If he got Jones thrown in, then it would have been better to hang onto him. But then, did they know that he would garner compensation?

by badradiorules on May 19, 2008 3:41 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Also, would the Rangers...

...have offered arbitration to Gagne and/or Mahay?

Right around the time all the young talent is ready to contend is when the organization will realize that Ron Washington is the wrong man for the job.

by Chad Crudup on May 19, 2008 3:44 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Well

I Gagne would’ve been a bit of a question mark, perhaps, just because if he’d accepted it might’ve been a ton of money. I think we would’ve, but you can’t be 100% on that. Another thing (which is mentioned below by laxtonto) to consider is that if he hadn’t cratered in Boston, he might’ve been a Type-A… something I think Boston was counting on when they made the deal, which makes it look even worse from their perspective.

As for Mahay… yah, I think us offering him arb would’ve been an absolute certainty. He was looking for a multi-year deal and with his skills combined with the craziness of the relief market, he was going to get a nicer deal on the market than he’d have gotten on a one year arb contract. And he was pretty clearly going to be a type B given his performance the past few years heading into the off season.

The 40 trumps all!!!

by thedirkatron on May 19, 2008 7:54 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I think Mahay was worth considerably more than just Jones

Mahay was/is a really good lefty bullpen arm, who was almost certainly going to get a sandwich pick as compensation when he left.

It’s of course going to be pure conjecture on our part to say what part of that deal Mahay was responsible for, but he had some real value at the deadline, believe that.

If Lofton was worth Max, it’s not a stretch to say Mahay was worth at least Neftali.

The 40 trumps all!!!

by thedirkatron on May 19, 2008 7:57 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

If that's true

Then I’ll take both those trades over compensation. Wouldn’t Beltre and Feliz go well before the 44th pick if they were in this draft.

by badradiorules on May 19, 2008 10:06 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Its always been a fun debate between picks and players

In the Gagne deal, i would take the players. As far as Mahay, its hard to tell how much Mahay was worth in the Tex deal.

I would say Lofton but….

At the time of the trade most people still thought he was going to grade out as a class A FA. I think the idea of extra pick Boston got from Gagne probably netted Texas Murphy or Beltre. Both which would retain more value than the 40ish pick which Boston got in the end.

Heres another quick thought,,,How much is it worth for trading from these kids after their signing bonuses have already been paid? Think of the difference there aswell. Over half a mil for Beltre, plus the saved developement time.

by laxtonto on May 19, 2008 3:47 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Give me a known good prospect

over draft picks any day of the week. The attrition rate of even 1st and sandwich round draft picks is just way too high. I would be curious to know the number of mid first round through sandwich round picks who have the equivalent of one full season in the majors. I suspect its less than 1 in 3, but that’s a wild assed guess.

by DJCahill on May 19, 2008 3:54 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Well

what’s a “known good prospect”?

If you were to handicap the odds of the 44th pick making an impact in the bigs versus the odds Engel Beltre makes an impact in the bigs, that’s probably a pretty close call right now, no?

The 40 trumps all!!!

by thedirkatron on May 19, 2008 4:41 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Beltre is kind of unique

given that he was 17 when dealt. How about Max Ramirez? We only gave up Lofton for him.

by zywica on May 19, 2008 4:44 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I would put the odds

of a 44th pick contributing more than David Murphy at about 30%.

"Before I leave, I once again condemn the despicable buffoonery of D.J. Cahill." - Huck

by DJCahill on May 19, 2008 4:59 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Remember

Beltre is considered someone who would be a high first rounder if he were in the draft this year. High first rounders have to be significantly more likely to make it than the 44th pick (late supp, early 2nd round).

David Murphy was a first round pick himself, and while he’s not an allstar, worse case scenario is that he’ll hold down a roster spot for several years. I’d say for a #17 pick, he was probably the median result.

For the 44th pick, you’re looking at probably about a 30% chance they even see the bigs, and you’re really just hoping to get lucky (

by JBImaknee on May 19, 2008 6:24 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I understand

and my point was never to say that these picks would’ve been better than the guys we got… cause they’re not, imo.

My point was simply that when you evaluate the prospects Atlanta and Boston gave us last year, you have to also count the picks we gave up in those deals.

Heck most people don’t even seem to remember that there was a second player involved from our side in the Atlanta deal, let alone that that player had some real value himself.

The 40 trumps all!!!

by thedirkatron on May 19, 2008 7:45 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Um, yeah...

...let’s work ona time machine so we can undo that trade. Boston sure suckered us on that one.

Right around the time all the young talent is ready to contend is when the organization will realize that Ron Washington is the wrong man for the job.

by Chad Crudup on May 19, 2008 2:53 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

No

It’s a great trade for the Rangers. However, to say that we should be scoreboarding the Red Sox is a little silly.

by badradiorules on May 19, 2008 2:56 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

First off it isnt a direct reference to the RedSox and the Rangers scoreboard.

Its in refernce to several of my freinds that live in Boston who check this boad from time to time. Second off, dont worry about trying to police who score boards what.

As far as Beltre being not being a big deal to Red Sox fans, next time you get a chance go to soxprospects or other deep redsoxboards and ask them about Beltre. They are still pissed about the fact he got dealt.
