Ned Yost to be fired?
There is a report out that Ned Yost is going to be fired today as the Brewers manager.
If true, it wouldn't be shocking, given the Brewers' second half struggles last season and their mediocre start to 2008. Yost has been under the gun a bit.
Ted Simmons is supposedly set to replace Yost, and I wonder if the managerial change might lead to some shakeups on the playing field, as well. There's been talk that the Brewers were interested in Gerald Laird, and Melvin has always loved Joaquin Benoit, so I wonder if this might open the door to some trade possibilities between Texas and Milwaukee...

Laird and Benoit
Trading Laird is a no-brainer.
However, even with his early-season struggles, I don’t know that the team could afford to deal Benoit. Who gets the 8th-inning if Benoit is out?
I don’t trust German. I guess Guardado could be the guy who can come in for the 8th. Do they move Rupe into the role.
Regardless, the Rangers need a strong pen to be successful, and dealing Benoit does not strengthen the pen (unless a reliver comes back in any deal).

I'm pulling a Sharky
I’ll respond to my own post. I forgot Franky Frank. He may be able to handle the 8th.

Mathis??
He’s looked pretty nasty so far. Not sure if he’s ready to be the 8th inning guy or not, but IF Benoit were dealt he could get consideration. Would you want to have back to back lefties in the 8th and 9th with Guardado and Wilson?

Should that be
Wilson and Guardado? :)

Who would you want
in return for these players. with all the recent matriculation of their prospects to the big leagues over the last few years, who does that leave them to trade?
Other than the young arms recently called up/ or injured like manny parra and yovanni gallardo (who is most likely not on the table) who else is there other than la porta? They dont have a spot for him with fielder, braun, hart, cameran, etc. all in the outfield and at first, however I highly doubt that package gets la porta.

laporta
we have enough of those.

Boy I disagree
IMO we have one, Hamilton, and he doesn’t play his position. Maybe you just don’t believe in LaPorta’s bat, but his status way, way outmeasures guys like Murphy, Boggs, Byrd, etc. And he’s at least as good of a prospect as Davis, if you move him back to 1B. They aren’t trading him to us for usable players like Laird and Benoit though.

i was talking about guys who can hit
without a real position, like Davis and Max. Who said i was talking about players in the majors?

I disagree regardless of what group of players we're talking about
Give me LaPorta over any of our hitting prospects.

Give me Max or Davis
i kinda like to have faith in our prospects, our players.

are you KIDDING me?

The Brew
Probably too much baseball left to say this but I see them selling and playing for next season. Not buying and trying to compete this season.

He needs to be fired
As much of a genius as Doug Melvin is, it is shocking that they are not the prohibitive World Series favorites.

Not that it matters for Laird, but
from the way the radio guys were talking yesterday, they see us in a win now sort of mode. While I don’t think we’ll be buyers at the deadline, I don’t think we’ll be big sellers either. As long as we are within 5 games or so, I don’t see any contributors leaving the team (including Bradley and Benoit). Laird is expendable, though.

Salty,
at his best in the big leagues was hitting comparable to Laird, he also is an average at best (and I am being kind) defensive catcher).
Why is Laird expendable if you want to win games.
That is not me in the photo, so relax.

Depends
on the return. As far as the future is concerned, they are in a position to deal either Laird or Salty, but if you’re dealing to a contender, Laird has more value right this minute since Salty seems to be finding his way with the bat.
...and curse Sir Walter Raleigh, he was such a stupid git.

Yeah Jeffress
Or since this organization doesn’t have a viable 3B anywhere in it now, you could bet on Matt Gamel’s arm.
by Brett Perryman on May 19, 2008 4:50 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Gamel
with Bill Hall playing 3B for them and Gamel putting up insane numbers in AA, I would be shocked if he was available.
by FirebatM3 on May 19, 2008 4:54 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Me too, unless they were getting a legit 3B back
He’s putting up huge numbers. Just throwing out a name that isn’t a slam dunk untouchable, or wasn’t when the season started anyway.
by Brett Perryman on May 19, 2008 5:18 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
You could bet
on his arm not to throw a ball anywhere close to 1B. According to BA, 53 errors in 128 games in ‘07.
by jparks77 on May 19, 2008 6:22 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah
and a lot of those throwing errors, hence my comment.

I may get banned for saying this...
Why the neverending Laird hate?
I really don’t see what Salty or any other catching prospect has done to make Laird such a target of derision. Whenever one of these guys proves themselves to be even the equal of Laird, let the discussions begin. Laymen opinions on potential or upside plus $2.00 will buy me a shitty cup of coffee at Starbucks. I’m not particularly a Laird fan or anything, it’s just odd to see the venom aimed at the guy, when he is actually playing pretty well. Be careful what you wish for. There is no guarantee that Salty is going to be any better than what he is right now, while Laird is probably playing close to what will be his career average right now.
The correct answer might be to keep Salty and trade Laird, I don’t know. But I don’t think it is a clear cut no-brainer.

you’re going to get banned on Lone Star Ball for supporting Laird? You might be confusing the peanut gallery with the proprietor, Adam.

Laird did us wrong
We all lobbied for Laird to get the starting job in 2006. Then he put up a 64 OPS+ in 2007, which greatly enraged everyone. No one will forget 2007. Also, LSJ outposts anyone here.

Yup - and I was one of them
Pissed about Barajas’s playing time in 2006 and pissed about Laird’s production last year. But I can more than admit that Laird’s played pretty well this year. Still, his bat against righties has something to be desired. Not terrible, just not very good.

trading salty instead has been brought up a thousand times
but we have two starting caliber (and ive never said laird isnt) catchers on the roster with plenty of other needs that need to be addressed… why make them both upset about not being a full time starter.
so since one needs to go.. is it all that unreasonable that a good portion of people prefer the 23 year old with 30+ HR upside?
if we are going to hurt the offense by moving young and blalock around, i think that upside would probably be a good thing to have around personally.
but if someone wants to give us a really nice pitching prospect for salty.. sure.
anyway i dont really think the brewers changing managers will spur any big moves. maybe, i just doubt it.
Gerald Laird is my hero.

Probably because
there was Barajas hate before Laird caught here, and Laird is basicly Barajas Lite.
