Volquez takes shots at Rangers
"I'm confident right now," Volquez said. "I don't think about if I pitch bad, will I get sent down? I don't have any pressure right now."
"I kept going back and forth," Volquez said. "You do something good, like I did in Triple-A, you get to the big leagues. The next year at Spring Training, they sent me all the way back to [Class] A ball. There was no reason."

who thinks he would be in the majors, much less doing this well had he kept down the same path he was on?

Volquez
No reason to send him down to A-ball? How about the 10-plus ERA he’d put up in his first 50 major-league innings?
It didn’t exactly seem to hurt him, either, as he excelled last year and developed enough trade value to be dealt for a guy who’s looking like an MVP candidate right now.
And I don’t exactly see the handling of Volquez, or his trade, as a knock on Daniels. It’s been a win-win for both clubs so far.

Re: Jon Daniels
He mishandles young players.
Ex: Dropping Jason Botts for Chris Shelton and keeping Brousard.

More examples please:
Volquez was not mishandled, Botts was.
Do you think the Botts DFA was Daniels’ idea, or Washington’s? I’ll bet the latter. In fact, I’d put money on it.
When the GM has to speak to the manager about getting a certain player more PT, and a few weeks later he’s gone? I would think the manager probably forced a hand or two.

So you
are saying Jon Daniels gets pushed around?
Seems like Daniels gets bossed around, I want a GM that knows what he wants and sticks to his plan…
I don’t know what JD is trying to accomplish right now…

You don't know what Daniels wants?
I would think it started at the deadline last season, and didn’t include Washington’s terrible use of the active roster. I think Daniels would rather see the younger players (out there (Botts, for example). Washington isn’t following orders, and Daniels feels guilty having hired Wash.

If he
wants the young guys to play then I don’t know why he still has sucky Jennings sticking around, Brousard, Shelton, Guardado ect.

If that was really the way JD felt
He would have fired Wash by now.
Instead, he’s wimping out, and only playing the young guys when he’s forced to do so by injury. So I’m not sure what the hell JD is doing, either. He says he’s got this master plan, but I have yet to see any evidence of it… I’ve been putting off saying that for quite awhile, but JD doesn’t seem to know what the hell he’s doing these days.

Odd.

Jon Daniels is a puppet...
for the Hicks regime. Hicks and his croonies hired Wash. Daniels may have had a small part in it but that decision came from the top.
I love Nolan Ryan to death but his hiring as the PRESIDENT was a PR move. What does he know about running a franchise. The Rangers are doomed until Hicks sells and an owner who cares about winning as much as $$$ comes in.
Volquez is having a great start. Whoop-ti-doo. John Danks had a quick start last year and fans went nuts about the McCarthy deal. If McCarthy stays healthy he will be a great middle staffer for us. The Danks, Diamond, and Volquez trio turned out to be a bust.
Botts is terrible. He is a defensive liability and has shown he cant hit in the majors. The only reason the Rangers kept The Brouss is bc of $$$. Soon, even he will get the axe.
This organization is crap. The only hope rests in the lower minor leagues. But the Rangers will cont. to be run as a small market team under Hicks. We will develop players and then trade them away when they get too expensive. We are in the DFW market, top 5 in the US, we should be acting like it! Hicks needs to realize he can make more of a profit with a successful team. He is fine with how things are going bc he is still turning a profit year in and year out with this pathetic excuse for a franchise.
There I am done venting.

said it before...
... i don’t think daniels is getting to make all the decisions he wants right now… hicks just hired a new team president and nolan is pushing JD into a win-now mode which wasn’t the plan… and its making JD look bad…

I agree, but...
This organization, as far as overall talent from top to bottom goes, is better than it ever had been. I don’t blame JD, really.
I want Hicks out, I want JD to stay, and I want the next manager to hire his own staff. That’s really all that needs to be done. Any GM who succeeds here for the next 10 here, will be doing so with Daniels team.

yeah
what jd is doing now is a long term plan and he wont be around to see it through. i agree though, new owner could solve a lot of things, not to mention a staff all hired by the manager.
I’m really thinking the first people needing to go are the pitching coaches perhaps followed by the “great” rudy.

Okay
So let me get this straight: Volquez is bitching about the very turn of events that allowed him to go back, redevelop his breaking ball, become a better pitcher, and revitalize his career and prospect status?
I’m actually glad we traded this punk now. Sheesh.

volquez
the guy always seemed like he had a touch of headcaseitus to him. but really i think all he needed was a fresh start somewhere, i dont doubt that his ego didnt take being sent to A ball very well and then missing his callup because he failed to attend a team practice.

Hey Eddie...
Obviously, A-Ball treatment worked. What’s the gripe?
BTW, you do realize who your manager is, right? You’ve had 4 starts with him so far? That means you have about 4 starts until injury kills your career. Dusty is going to ruin you. Just like he’s ruined every other young pitcher he’s worked with.
by cmkelly29 on May 2, 2008 6:42 PM CDT 0 recs
Also...
I seem to remember Volquez missing up a tune-up game right before being called up 2 years ago? The organization then punished him by foregoing his promotion. I bet you ANYTHING, his anger towards to Rangers has more to do with discipline than anything else. It’s probably his own fault.

volquez
also last season when he was in AAA he missed a mandatory practice claiming his alarm clock didn’t go off and they postponed his cal call up because of it.
the guys shown some character issues over the years, but no one could deny the talent he has

Maybe that's what i'm thinking of.
Of course he’s talented, he just doesn’t seem to get it.
If Volquez doesn’t make go back to A-Ball last season, he’s still here and he’s probably struggling in the minors. Daniels may have saved his career for all we know.
He seems to be a headcase, to me.

i always thought former players had good things to say about the organization that traded them.

Volquez
I think he was mishandled not by Daniels but by Buck Showalter. If you look at the game logs, you’ll see that Volquez got very irregular rest between starts in 2005. That screws with a starting pitcher’s routine, and I imagine the problem was exasperated by his youth.
Sending him back to class A made sense…he was on a fast track to get back. Headcase or not, I wish he were still here. Not saying anything about Hamilton. Wish the Rangers could somehow have had both players.

Edinson I agree with you...
Why did we send him up and down? IT makes no sense. Who cares how he performed at the big league level? Let him pitch. Oh wow our #5 SP doesn’t pitch well. Who cares? We sucked anyways.
