Minors 5-2-08
OKC has another late start tonight as old Dusty Tits pitches for the RedHawks on a rehab assignment.
Frisco is already underway against San Antonio with Michael Schalact on the mound.
Chris Davis is seemingly out of his slump as he just went opposite field for his 2nd home run in as many days (8th overall). Emerson Frostad follows with a pulled shot to right for a back-to-back jack sequence.
Bakersfield goes at 9:15 with Hyatt on the mound. Julio Borbon looks to continue his 7 game hit-streak.
Clinton is also already underway with Neftali Feliz pitching in the first. He's still very inconsistent.

What is the most important stat for you when evaluating young hitters? Is there such a thing? How much credence do you give to the idea of age vs. league?

I am not a stat geek but for minor league hitters I look at OBP and K/AB. I do think age vs league is appropriate at times. An example is Ian Gac. If he continues to keep raking like he is then he may need to jump up to Frisco when Davis goes on to AAA.

Layman's POV
I pay attention to OBP and IsoP, and sometimes the ration of K:BB. I like to know if the hitter is depending on BABIP, or if he has some power (or years ago, in the case of MY, is a line drive type who makes pretty good contact.) Age at level is pretty important historically, so I can’t quarrel a lot with it. I endorsed Cruz despite some obvious learning curves because of his short baseball tenure for his age (dropped basketball for baseball at 18).
And most of all, “compared to what”? How is the kid doing versus like competitors, and is he showing improvement.

most important stat for hitters
Gimme K:BB, but then you need to see it in the context of ABs.
Or I guess you could just say OBP.
You really need two stats, whether it’s K:BB or even K:BB with ABs, or OBP and SLG.

Season Totals – 26.1 IP, 12 BB, 34 K’s
His last 3 starts have really made the April 12th walk-fest look like a genuine fluke.

Yeah
See I was going to leave it at that.
But tonight, instead of Fabio relieving like usual, it really was a Julio that relieved.
Just fuck it. I was really tired when I posted, I’ll be better tomorrow.

If you dont count that walk-fest
his numbers are very impressive. Numbers without that walk-fest are 25.2 IP, 15 H, 9 ER, 7 BB, 34 K’s. I will take that from a 20 YO who can bring the heat.
by coolaid on May 2, 2008 8:31 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Heck
I’ll take his numbers with the walk-fest. A good deal more K’s than IP and a nearly 3/1 gb/fb ratio.
Without the catastrophe start his numbers are borderline unreal.
Maybe Goldstein wasn’t crazy giving him 5 stars and naming him our top prospect.

Steve Murphy
hits his 3rd homer. How hot does he have to get to be a legitimate prospect?
by FirebatM3 on May 2, 2008 8:28 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Z's seen him play a lot with Frisco
and IIRC, he’s not very impressed with his D and athleticism. Maybe MJH can opine soon about Murphy on his blog. JC, you out there? What do you think of Murphy?
by shroomer on May 2, 2008 8:36 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yep...just got back from the game
Murphy is definitely ready for AAA ball. Both of those home runs tonight were absolutely crushed.
After last year, he told me that he realized being a free-swinger wasn’t going to cut it at the higher levels, so he was going to try and get himself into more hitter’s counts. It is definitely working. He is noticeably more patient this season and it’s paying off.
Murphy is not all that athletic, but he’s not quite a mule either. Kind of a ‘tweener in that he doesn’t do anything particularly well in the field, but he’s not all that bad either. Just kind of average out there with what I’d say is a average/solid-average arm in left.
I’d say he’s a legitimate prospect right now. I ranked him 48th in the system entering this year because I still had some faith, especially after he told me he needed to change his approach.

Kinda sounds like Metcalf's story -
cut back on the free-swinging and find success. I asked RSL a few weeks ago – if MaxRam could play OF as well as Steve Murphy, would his game play in the bigs? He said yeah. So, I guess logic would hold that if Steve Murphy can hit like MaxRam his game would play in the bigs as well. heh

If JMJ keeps hitting like this he will be a Sept. call up as well.

Frisco Tonight
Went to the game tonight and a few oberservations:
- The Missions play defense like the Rangers….terrible. When I left in the top of the ninth, they had two errors, they could have easily had three more
- I’ve got some free taquito’s from Whataburger because the Missions’ pitchers had 10K’s. The Frisco batters were swinging at EVERYTHING. It was terrible. Chris Davis was the prime culprit of this. He was swinging at just bad pitches which were never in the strike zone
- Elvis is one sweet looking fielder. He showed some really good range to his left and right with a real good arm. Davis was picking everything at first and he also showed good range to his right to knock down a ball (but Schlact candyassed it from the mound and the guy was safe)
- Schlact did not look good—at all. He needs to learn the concept of the shutdown inning
- Whomever hit the homer in the top of the eighth just f’ing crushed it. It was a no doubter.
- MaxRam…I am a fan. He looked really good at the plate showed good power to the gap. He looked fine behind the plate. Blocked balls in the dirt well and had a really nice snap throw to third and almost got the runner.

Julio Borbon
1-3 with 2 more walks and another stolen base tonight.
Between Mayberry hitting for average and Borbon taking walks, I think we can clearly label today Bizzaro day.
