Put Yourself in MY's Shoes...
It seems like some of you are grossly overreacting to MY's comments yesterday. There is absolutely no reason for MY to move to third base right now, and that's all he was trying to say. I think the hatred some of you hold for MY caused you to ignore the part where he said:
"There is no reason for me to move to third base," Young said. "I can't envision what's going to happen down the road, but for right now and the near future, any position other than shortstop is not an option."
or:
"If something happens down the road and the team is better served by me moving, I'm sure there will be some discussions," Young said. "But the time is not now, and I don't see it in the near future."
Let's put this in real world terms. I'll use myself as an example. I'm a senior financial analyst (MY) and I 'm being asked change to another position. This is how I see the current situation....
BOSS: Hey Mike, now that Hank has left the marketing department we feel that it would be better for the company if you gave up your senior financial analyst position and took Hank's old position in the marketing department. We just feel that your skills as a senior financial analyst will begin declining over the next few years and would be better suited for the less demanding marketing job. Now I know you have been nothing but a team player and want nothing more than to see this company succeed....I mean when our previous senior financial analyst transferred to New York, you volunteered to take on his responsibilities and have been nothing short of serviceable.
ME: So, who's going to take my position?
BOSS: We don't currently have anybody within the company that can do your job any better than you are doing, but we have our eye on a kid that will graduate college in a year or two. We're hoping he'll be something special, but right now he still has some things to work on.
Now, I know this scenario is completely ridiculous, but it's similar to what some you seemingly want to happen.
The question in the article was, "Secondly, does this mean Michael Young is headed for third base?" Since the question does not state a time frame, MY answered for both the present and the future, and both were good answers.
Am I moving to third base right now - Absolutely not.
Will I move to third in the future - if the team will benefit by me moving over in the future, we'll talk about it then. (paraphrase)
What's wrong with that? Give the guy a break.

I agree with your synopsis
It would be completely different if Andrus was knocking at the door of the majors and it was a question of MY at third and Andrus at SS, or MY at SS and Andrus. But that is years off. When that comes, Young will move over.
This situation is very similar to the Teixeira / Adrian Gonzalez situation. AGon was knocking at the door, but he could only play a position currently fielded by the team’s resident all-star. The difference was that Teixeira was a gold glove 1b himself (though I don’t believe as good as AGon), so there wasn’t that motivation for the team to make a move. Also, like Young, Tex had successfully moved once before for the team. Both players were/have been perennial all stars at that position.
We know what happened in that case – AGon got traded because there was no where to play him, and now is a star in SD. I think that Young remembers that story, and would rather see Andrus come up in Texas than with, say, San Diego. I think that Young is a better “team player” than Teixeira ever was, and he’ll move when the time comes.
Young isn’t an idiot – if Andrus is as good defensively as everyone says he is, then Young will see that the best move is to go to 3rd. That time isn’t here yet, but when it comes Young will move. Think about it, it has to be a lot easier to see that some rookie is a phenom than to just admit that you are the problem.

Too True
Although your comp could be more accurate:
Them: Your 12:00pm Tuesday & Thursday class is being changed to 8:00 am Monday-Friday. We have a better student transferring in next semester, so we need to make room for him.
You: Man, that’s so wiggity-wiggity-whack! I didn’t ask for this!
Them: You did excel at dragging your ass to class by 12:05, hangover and all, and did grunt a few times during class discussions, but, we felt the move was needed.
You: Fuck this, I am so transferring to CCCC!

My only problem with Young
“I can’t envision what’s going to happen down the road, but for right now and the near future, any position other than shortstop is not an option.”
I don’t think Young should move off SS right now either, but when players make concrete statements about where they are going to be playing, it turns me off.
That said, I think Young will graciously move to 3B when and if Andrus makes the case. I think Young understands his role and he definitely understands the amount he is being paid to accept that role.
I lied. I have other problems with Young as well.

It doesn’t matter. My point was that I don’t like statements that include ‘not an option’ coming from players.

This is pretty close
to what I said to lonestar Jon bandwagondriver last night:
how would you feel if the day after your colleague changed jobs a bunch of people came to you asking "so when are you going to admit you need to take a less challenging position"? I think 99 out of 100 people would respond as Young did, if they have any pride in their work.
Your analogy of the college kid is a good one. I think this is much ado about nothing, as every single Michael Young quote usually is. Ever since he signed the extension people expect him to be the best player on the field and the best public speaker. If his teammates and manager and the front office don’t have a problem with him, I don’t either. He is stubborn, proud, and perhaps a bit full of himself, but I sure would be if most players in the league held me in such respect.
...and curse Sir Walter Raleigh, he was such a stupid git.

First of all...
this is bullshit. “Put yourself in MY’s shoes.”
Ok…so for starters my boss is paying me $6,174,974. Let’s keep that in mind as we go.
I’m the Director of IT for my organization.
There are rumors going around that my boss might want me to be the Director of Communications because I might not be keeping up the the changes in IT fast enough.
My first thought is…am I going to make the same amount of money? Yes
Am I going to enjoy the new job? Yes
Are people going to wonder why I moved (i.e.: ego)? Absolutely
Am I worried about what people will think? You bet
Has it been explained why the organization is making the move? Not yet, but everyone pretty much knows why…it doesn’t need to be spelled out.
My point…MY’s only problem here is ego. He’s getting paid a whole hell of a lot of money to do his job and his bosses have the ABSOLUTE right to tell him to play another position. Take into account the Alfonso Soriano situation. If you are MY, you keep your freaking mouth shut on the subject until it is approached by management or you feel compelled to approach them. Using the media as a mouthpiece is NOT what a leader does and certainly not a FOTF.

I'm not saying
he shouldn’t move to third. I’m just saying he shouldn’t move to third right now. And you know what? That’s all he said. What’s the problem with what he said?
If your boss replaced you with some spare that’s going to perform even worse than you, you’re not going to question it? Actually strike that. MY didn’t even question it. He just said what we all already know – At this point it would be absolutley retarded to move MY to third with no viable replacement. Right now it is not the time for the team to move him over…in the future? No doubt.

Wow
I missed the part of the story where he called a press conference to let his thoughts be known on the subject. Wasn’t he responding to a question after a game that ended in a tough loss? The media as a mouthpiece? Seriously? He answered a question honestly. He answered it like it was a ridiculous question and right now it is. Who is going to play short if he moves tomorrow. Vazquez? Duran? Arias? Casey Benjamin? Drew Meyer? The most optimistic timetable for Andrus has to be at least a year away.
Does he have an ego? Absolutely. if you have a problem with baseball players with egos, you have a problem with baseball. He was never a big time prospect and has obviously worked his butt off to be in the position that he is right now. I’m sure that he takes a lot of pride in that fact and even when the day comes, he’s going to have to be pushed to third. That’s fine, because it is that same stubborness that made him the player that he is.
I’ve got to stop being drawn offsides by all the MY haters on here.

Young's attitude is what I have a problem with here
He’s taken care to say the right things (as he usually does) so you can’t accuse him of outright saying he won’t move, but his attutude is made quite clear: he does not want to move off shortstop. And he seems insulted by the possibility that it might happen – kinda reminds me of Alfonso Soriano.
If you’ll note, while he never says he won’t move to third, he never says he will, either – he just says there will be “discussions”.
If MY does not want to make a voluntary move to third base, we should trade him, in my opinion. He’s obviously not the leader or team player he’s made out to be, and he’s only gonna provide sub-par production for the third base position anyway.
He doesn’t seem to want to be this teams Cal Ripken – so don’t make him one.

For all the Tom Hicks hater's on here.........
there sure are a bunch of people worried about MY (or any player) making $$$ ....who gives a shit if it costs Hicks another mil or two? MY played ‘on the cheap’ for 3-4 years and will get paid (maybe?) a little more than he’ll be worth in 2012. No one knows the future, he may well be a bargain….....The problem is $4 mil for the Broussard’s of the world, not the $12-$14 (in a few years) for the Michael Young’s.

MY...
What’s wrong with him at the plate lately? He doesn’t seem like himself. He is
1) jumping at pitches
2) swinging at balls out of the zone
3) trying to pull outside pitches instead of going with them.
Not very Mike Young like lately
