Around SBN: The Worst Season of Francisco Rodriguez's Career Bar-right-arrows

Terence Newman signed, Marion Barber also signed!

Marion Barber's deal is 45 million, 21 garenteed over the first 3 years.

6 years 50.2 mill for Newman

22 million garenteed

Great signing, happy we locked up one of the best corners in the league for a pretty good price...

When did Lil' Miles

become the internet tough guy du jour on this site?

He’s a hundred and twenty pound, seventeen year old richer from Highland Park who’s very likely never thrown a punch in his life.

Surely we can do better than that, fellas.

I love the Barbarian, but. . .

I’m a strong believer that teams are best not signing runningbacks to long, expensive contracts. They’re relatively easily replaced, and are likely to have short careers. A huge contract for a runningback is a very huge risk.

At least he’s still young and hasn’t had a lot of carries yet. It’s the happiest I could be about a long-term contract for a RB.

by philkid3 on May 20, 2008 3:47 PM CDT   0 recs

he won't be here more than 3 years

i’ll say that with 90% certainty.

"Popularity is fleeting. … Principles are forever." - George W. Bush

by Longhorn on May 20, 2008 4:04 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I agree with you on all of that

and I’d add something on each side: On the plus, it sounds like the contract is geared to be more cumbersome through 2010, and you could probably get out of it rather gracefully toward the end. On the negative, I’m like you, not a big fan of committing long term money to a RB, but especially so when you’re paying a good, not great back. When you have an Adrian Peterson, you’re going to have to pay him. Barber isn’t in that class.

by zywica on May 20, 2008 4:05 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Non-Guaranteed Contracts...

I think that both of those guys are good bets to produce at elite levels over the next 3 years. After that the contracts are non-guaranteed, so…... no worries.

by Topgun22 on May 20, 2008 4:28 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Barber is better than Adrian Peterson in a few areas of the game

I’d rather have Peterson the athlete, but Barber the monster he is in goal line situations and to wear the opposing defense down. and I have played basketball with the guy, he’s a FREAK athlete himself. when you’ve built a team around 3 running backs, you can afford to pay one bigger than the others to put up 800 to 1000 yards on the ground and 15 TDs, keeping him fresh and healthy. He’ll have a bigger role than the last 2 years, but not by much. This is a smart contract because we have (hopefully) surrounded Barber with quality backups that can and will be plugged into different situations. So you pay him for what he’s done in the past and will continue to do if you keep him healthy, and you hope that drafting Felix and Choice will pan out enough to where he won’t be running the ball 400 times a year. If you limit him to 250 carries, he’s going to do some pretty special things for you…

Do we have to start worrying about the cap yet??

I mean the mpney Jerry is handing out is starting togive out is going to get crazy. Let’s see, off the topof my head if I am correct, Romo, Barber, Witten, Adams, Kosier, Roy Williams, Bradie James, Anthony Henry , Newman, and TO have pretty big contracts. Add that up with guys like Columbo, Hamlin, Ware, and Canty in line for new contracts, do we have to worry about the cap situation???

Okay...

So I didn’t watch but one game this year (the Thanksgiving game) simply because most games came on during the middle of the night. Did something change this season that I didn’t see since I was overseas, or does Newman still get burned every play? If so, why are we paying him so much?

Considering

it is an opinion, I doubt someone like you can classify it as wrong.

However, considering a recent Sporting News CB ranking, voted on by the GMs, didn’t even rank Newman in the top 5 in the NFC, it seems unlikely that my opinion is on an island alone.

by jparks77 on May 21, 2008 3:42 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

He is underrated,

The Gm’s also say Roy Williams is good.

I like him

I just don’t think he is top 5 in the NFL. That said, our secondary as a unit has the potential to be the best in the league. I’ve never really been excited about that specific defensive unit before.

Our dime package is going to be ridiculous. Newman, Henry, Jones and Jenkins is a serious collection of talent.

Question: If Jones is reinstated by the league and proves to be 100%, do you start him and Henry at the corners and allow Newman to work in the slot? Or do you start Jones and Newman and move Henry to safety on passing downs?

by jparks77 on May 21, 2008 4:09 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Its

a great problem to have.

The potential of 4 good corners on this team makes me happy.

Cutting Roy Williams and moving Henry to Safety for good would make me even happier…
