I woke up this morning and got the feeling that Doug Mathis would pitch a perfect game tonight. I know, I know, probably something to do with Lester’s no-hitter getting into my head or something. But…

Byrd in CF

Who is supposed to be the better defender in center, Murph or Byrd? Based on what I’ve seen from Murphy defensively this year, I think I’d rather have him in CF and Byrd in LF.

well

i know we don’t like to use fielding percentage anymore but… hammy is at .963 with 3 errors in 297 innings.

last year byrd had 2 errors in 496 innings.

of course that’s a basic stat and nothing fancy like range or whatnot

I love that lineup

put in Hank now and Chris Davis down the line at 1B, buy a DH and move Milton to RF and Hamilton to CF and you’ve got the perfect lineup in my mind…for a few years anyways, until Andrus and others push the point

scouting report on Mathis?

Does anyone have a link or two with a scouting report on him. I’m curious to know what to expect. I’ll also miss the beginning of the game so I won’t hear Lewin and Grieve tell me anything.

it’s his first career start. he’s pitched well in 3 relief outings.

RHP Doug Mathis (1-0, 0.00 ERA): After two scoreless relief innings, Mathis will make his first career start. Mathis was 5-0 with a 3.55 ERA at Triple-A Oklahoma before his call-up last week. His minor league splits ranged widely. He held right-handed hitters to a .161 batting average, but lefties hit .349. Mathis will become the ninth different Ranger to make a start this season. Each of the other AL West teams has used seven. Mathis has not faced the Twins.

From Mike Hindman's blog
17) Doug Mathis—24 YO RHP (2005 13th Round)

The Rangers have tried to fast-track the 6’3” sinkerball specialist more than any other pitcher who has come into the fold in the past three years. Coming out of the University of Missouri, Mathis was sent to the college-dominated NWL, but in 2006 he jumped Clinton and went straight to Bakersfield. Perhaps the biggest shocker among 2007 opening day assignments was the appearance of Mathis on the Oklahoma roster. Clearly, the Rangers want to get to the point on Mathis as soon as possible.

In part, most likely, Mathis is being pushed so fast because he is an extremely bright and mature young man with tremendous poise and strong leadership skills. He pitches with a plan and doesn’t rattle. Which is not to say that Mathis was not or is not a guy capable of change or improvement. Mathis has gained velocity since joining the system and he’s added a curveball which gives him four legit offerings. Though he lacks the electric stuff of a lot of pitchers on this list, he’s arguably the most complete, well-rounded guy in the system.

His early assignment to OKC didn’t go very well and his season was marred by back problems that ultimately shut him down for a spell in the middle of the season, but his first eight and especially his last six starts with the Riders (2.29 ERA; 33 K’s and 8 BBs in 39 IP; .217 opponents average) were enough to leave you thinking that this is a guy who could creep into the back end of the Rangers rotation at some point in 2008.

They're not

It’s possible that they don’t make the playoffs, but not likely, imo. Someone like Oakland or Chicaco would have to beat them out, and I just don’t see that happening. TB is a year away.

by Brett Perryman on May 20, 2008 6:51 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Just because they

made it to the playoffs 13 years in a row doesn’t mean they will make it this year. Even last year, when they were in that big hole in the first half, they had much better pitching to help them get back in it in the 2nd half. This year, they have an inconsistent Mussina, average Pettite, good CM Wang, injured Hughes, crappy Kennedy…. Rasner? That lineup is good, but one year older. Fuggedaboudit.

There is no such thing as global warming. David Murphy was cold, so he turned the sun up.

by SarasotaRanger on May 20, 2008 7:23 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I wouldn't fuggedabout Joba

Wang, Pettitte, Joba, Mussina, Hughes is better than what TB or any of the second tier teams throw out there, and their lineup blows them all out of the water.

The Yankees really suck

I wonder what they’d give up for Millwood or Padilla? They clearly need some starting pitching, and they don’t strike me as a team that wants to wait for their young guys too long. I’d be pretty happy if we could spin Padilla to them for Ian Kennedy, one of their good position prospects and maybe a throw in or two.

But I bet they’ll sign Teixeira this offseason, maybe even CC Sabathia, and be back in the hunt next year.

Tommy Hunter quote to Jason Cole, when asked about pitch counts:

Hunter: Everybody was really at 100 pitches. Nolan Ryan came in there and he pretty much laid down the law. You’re going to get up to 100 pitches, or 110 pitches, sometimes. Harrison threw over 100 the other night. It’s going to happen. It is not that big of a deal. It’s just what you’re supposed to do

There was a big discussion the other day about Matt Harrison throwing 120 pitches in his no-no

And how it’s not necissarily a good thing that Nolan Ryan wants our young prospects throwing a ton of pitches.

This is just confirmation of my fears that Nolan’s pushing the enelope with our prospects.

Because

He had a good night offensively last night, and he needs more at bats. He has also worked with Mathis in AAA this year.

your right........

.......lets start the 22 yr old .200 hitting learning the game catcher with Mathis throwing his first M.L start. Laird wouldnt make sense, since he hasnt been hot or anything or he’s not hitting 80 points higher. Mathis made to the big leagues the least we could do is give him a big league catcher.

by blueballlefty on May 20, 2008 7:29 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

What the hell is your problem?

Salty is know to frame pitches a helluva a lot better than Laird. All Laird can do is throw, and theres more to being a good defensive catcher than that.

Salty has a .392 OBP to go with that .205 average. He’s starting to come out of his slump.

This season, yes, he is.

Though I understand giving Salty at-bats right now because, hot streak or not, I still think we need to play for the future and not this season.

my other question

don’t hit send till done…doh

Of the three in Clinton, Holland, Feliz, and Gomez, which is most likely to be promoted and/or should be promoted to Bakersfield.

by Hull Fan on May 20, 2008 7:56 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Gomez least likely

Holland is mature and solid – doubt they worry if he could handle any aspect of the Cal League.
Feliz is a bad-azz – maybe they want to challenge him, but probably just want him to cruise for while.

So, I guess Holland, Feliz then Gomez – if I bet a dollar on it.

by shroomer on May 20, 2008 8:01 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I would think that he’s a little more advanced than Feliz and that you might be able to be a little more reckless with him.

Yeah but

the fact that Feliz is in a hot streak aside, Gomez and he have been roughly as dominant as each other and both have been better than Holland. I certainly wouldn’t see a Gomez promotion as taking a flyer, especially given the opinion that some of our “analysts” have of him as a prospect.

Don’t be stupid by comparing the way Kinsler plays defense and the way Josh does.

Lapses in concentration at 2nd is worse and he does it more often anyways. Also, did you want Sori to stay at 2nd?

But he's also probably better relative to the QBs in the league right now than. . .

. . . Young has been relative to the hitters in the league at any point in his career.

And, for this analogy, a veteran QB makes a bit more sense, since MY is a veteran player with plenty of evidence to look at.

And this is a silly discussion, but at least it’s keeping me from looking at the scoreboard.

I completely disagree with everything you said.

Except maybe a little on the first part because you partly agreed with me.

- The guy is a class act. Name one instance when he hasn’t been that’s legit.
- He is a great leader. Taking a position switch of his own accord when the team needed someone to step up and do it? I think so. Not to mention all of his comments to the media the last couple of years about how the less-than-solid play of the team was completely unacceptable.
- And yes, he is a damn good hitter. To again use the example of his 200 hits at the end of a year, he’s done it 5 years in a row. Look at the company that puts him. Those guys are damn good, and so is Mike. He’s given me no reason to think otherwise.

Huh?

You’re going to have to explain what you just said to me.

Only once has he had an OPS+ of 110 or better. Just once. You’re right, that is the key word, but that would mean only once has he not sucked.

Not that I would say a 108 OPS+ is sucky, I’m just using your words.

He’s only been better than 9% above average once in his career (131, which is AWESOME from a shortstop, he was great that year).

I meant that it was not good (e.g. below average)

The key part is ONLY once.

And you are undervaluing OPS. Hits measure almost nothing useful, and batting average is an incredibly useless rate stat. It doesn’t tell you about outs avoided/made or power.

by philkid3 on May 20, 2008 9:58 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

OPS

is the best measure of run creation available. The point of the game, as we’re constantly reminded, is not by getting hits, it’s by creating runs. When you get on base, you create runs. When you hit for power, you create runs.

Michael Young does neither of those things well right now, and on top of that, he’s costing this team games with his glove.

Hence, people dislike him.

by FirebatM3 on May 20, 2008 9:58 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

But don't you think

that a lot of the reason his OPS was only average for so many years is because of his spot in the lineup? We didn’t exactly ever have a stellar lead-off guy.

The world is flat.

I don’t care what you guys thing.

Dude, On Base Plus Slugging is a very, very rudimentary baseball stat. It’s taking how many times someone doesn’t get out, and how many bases he averages per plate appearance, and combining those measures.

I honestly didn’t know there was a baseball fan who didn’t know what that was. Don’t get angry because you don’t.

by philkid3 on May 20, 2008 10:07 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ok... here's something then.

His spot in the lineup didn’t call for him to swing for the fences because no one ahead of him got on. He needed only to create opportunities for others to drive him in, which he did by getting a ton of hits, singles or not. That, again, to me, makes one sign of a good hitter, that he can get on base to allow others the opportunity to drive him in.

My three favorite numbers: 10, 32, 36. =)

so you'd rather him hit a single

when nobody is on base than a double?

by Dirk Diggler on May 20, 2008 10:12 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Good grief.

NO.

I’m saying that he didn’t always have a reason to swing for the fence or to hit balls in the gap necessarily. As a leadoff guy (which he basically became with the lack of production from the real one), your job is to get on base. Mike did that.

My three favorite numbers: 10, 32, 36. =)

by utlonghorn24 on May 20, 2008 10:14 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes, he gets on base at a decent clip.

He’s not garbage. But that doesn’t make him a damn good hitter.

And BA and H don’t measure how well someone gets on base.

by philkid3 on May 20, 2008 10:20 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

No.

He hit in that spot in the line-up BECAUSE he had no power. Power is just as usefull everywhere in the lineup, you just put your most powerful guys in the heart of the order to maximize production.

If he could hit for more power, he would. And SLG isn’t all about swinging for the fences. Plenty of players have respectable OPSes without hitting a lot of home runs.

And if he’s at the top of the order, his job is to gett on base. That means putting up a high OBP, not hitting a lot of singles.

OPS is no less applicable to Michael Young than it is any other player.

Great Leader – How are moving positions to accommodate Soriano and bitching about the team’s poor play examples of leadership?
Good hitter – Someone already mentioned this to you, but you are way overvaluing total hits.

by LiamP on May 20, 2008 9:50 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Dude, whatever.

Being accountable for those things, which he HAS done, makes him a good leader. Everyone in management deemed him the unquestioned team leader on the team. He’s done nothing not to deserve the title. Seriously, name one.

And how do you overvalue 200 freaking hits? For five years in a row? That’s a sign of a pretty effing good hitter.

And I said you admitted the class act part, just for the record.

My three favorite numbers: 10, 32, 36. =)

by utlonghorn24 on May 20, 2008 9:53 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

200 Hits

200 isn’t the sign of a pretty good effing hitter, it’s just the sign of someone who has gotten at least 200 singles. If he has a ton of plate appearances and only gets singles and nothing else, he’s not a very good hitter.

It ignores the ability to get on base (OBP) and the power generated in those hits (SLG), both of which are very, very, very important. Much more important than total hits.

As pointed out, MY’s OPS has usually been about average. One season it was well above average. He doesn’t avoid outs very much, and he doesn’t have a lot of power.

by philkid3 on May 20, 2008 9:56 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I understand your position

And you have a point. But the guy has gotten a ton of hits, which to me, is the sign of a great hitter. It doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with his ability to drive in runs or create them (after all, he has hit 2nd most of his time with the Rangers), at least in my opinion.

My three favorite numbers: 10, 32, 36. =)

by utlonghorn24 on May 20, 2008 10:02 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

But you're in a pretty large majority in that opinion.

Most people define a good hitter by how good someone is at producing at the plate. They don’t define it as who gets the most hits because they dont’ care who has the most hits. It’s not particularly meaningful.

by philkid3 on May 20, 2008 10:04 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hmm...

I don’t know, I just think Mike has done a lot for the organization, and for his slump to garner him so much flack from some here is a good bit disheartening to me. I just wanted to point out why I thought he was better than those opinions, that’s all.

My three favorite numbers: 10, 32, 36. =)

by utlonghorn24 on May 20, 2008 10:08 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, he gets too much flack.

He also gets too much praise.

He really is actually having a pretty good season. He’s just not a great hitter. For a shortstop he’s a good hitter.

by philkid3 on May 20, 2008 10:10 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Just wondering here...

Why does everyone correlate a player’s success with their position relative to other players at the same position? Shouldn’t it just be looked at overall by similar players in regard to style or type of hitter?

My three favorite numbers: 10, 32, 36. =)

by utlonghorn24 on May 20, 2008 10:13 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Style or type of hitter doesn't matter.

Only what you produce. If you put together a high OPS by being a doubles hitter with a high BA, or by being a slugger with a lot of walks, it doesn’t matter. All that matters is the production.

Comparing how someone hits to the other players of their position helps you measure a player’s value. Offense is more valuable at some positions than others. MY’s offense is more valuable than, say, Chris Sheltons (if they have equal production).

MY is a good hitter for a shortstop. He his not a very good hitter if you irregard position, though.

Last year, David Ortiz was almost as good a hitter as A-Rod, but A-Rod’s offense was much more valuable because he was playing third while Papi was DHing.

have you heard this commerical?

I just didn’t want to hear it especially when he’s in a slump at the plate. Sell the Rangers, hell sell Hamilton, Kinsler, Murphy, or something. It’s just a bad commerical and I’m tired of hearing it.

by Hull Fan on May 20, 2008 9:39 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

It's marketing

I’m listening to KRLD too. I’m sure that they’ll make new ones featuring Hamilton. There are even more featuring Nolan Ryan. They’re simply trying to sell more tickets.

by Randy Richardson on May 20, 2008 9:43 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

There IS propaganda out there making him out to be great.

Not saying that’s you or not, but it’s there.

Just like there’s propaganda out there making him out to be garbage. He’s our own little version of Derek Jeter.

im discussing the general "too much young hate" posts

do you think by the “other opinion” i was referring to a specific commercial reference? come on.

and please, the commercial does make him out to be better than he is. is that standard commercial stuff? yeah. does it bother me? no. is it ridiculous to be pointed out? no.

the fact is the rangers have had a bad 3 days in which young has been terrible. it shouldnt be that surprising to see some young criticism stir up. what exactly do you expect in a reaction base thread? young continues his slump and somebody to go “goooooooooooooo young, i love you” instead of noting his continuous swing and misses at the same pitch?

with his heir apparent in the upper minors. Those are the type of guys that usually become punching bags.

The guy is 19 years old

and doing decently as a singles hitter with good defense. I’ll take that over a singles hitter with bad defense any day of the week.

by FirebatM3 on May 20, 2008 9:51 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

He's also a fan favorite, with a lot of people turning a blind eye to him.

That can also lead to punching-bag-itis from fans who aren’t biased towards the player, but compensate by going too far the other way.

Derek Jeter’s getting it lately in Yankees groups.

by philkid3 on May 20, 2008 9:54 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

the main thread.... from LAST NIGHT? this is ridiculous

bottom line:

the guy is slumping and playing poor defensively.
some people criticize him for it.

so what?

Gerald Laird is my hero.

by DSheppard on May 20, 2008 9:49 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

agreed

but, it’s overkill. He’s a good player, who the team signed to a huge contract. Why not be mad at JD, instead?

by Randy Richardson on May 20, 2008 9:57 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Oh we

have plenty of people mad at JD already.

When he signed his contract, even the most negative (Cahill) didn’t think he’d be this bad this quickly. He was also the one making noise last year and the year before that about 1) wanting a contract or 2) wanting out cause the team’s bad.

by FirebatM3 on May 20, 2008 10:01 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

not a reply to you

but im leaving the thread and just want to summarize my opinion on MY

I dont think hes a bad player. I dont personally dislike him. I loved him a couple years ago like most of us did.

But as you see him slip further defensively, lose power, and have longer and longer slumps… its frustrating. It happens to almost every player. Its not like I want to wish we hadnt signed MY long term, but the reality is its looking like its going to be a poor contract.

And its just how baseball works, but it happens to coincide with his salary skyrocketing so it makes his value to the team look worse.

And then this moving blalock from 3b nonsense comes in and frustrates me because it seems connected to MY, and it seems like the team is hurting itself to try to hide MY’s flaws. And in this case I do bring up JD, i think it was stupid to allow that move. But blalock isnt the topic so ill move on…

Young is a player with flaws and good attributes like any other player. I dont think its ridiculous to think he is really good and I dont think its ridiculous to think he is below average when you start thinking about him as a 3b.

And its certainly not ridiculous to get frustrated with him and make some remarks in a gameday thread. Young doesnt deserve immunity from crticism. If you guys cant take some criticisms during a slump, I dont know what you are doing in a reaction based thread.

Basically… blah. I want MY to be great, but facts are facts and hes declining like 99% of players do. I think a good portion of fans who follow really closely and watch some of his struggles are going to be frustrated, and some of them are going to be vocal about it. Fair game.

Gerald Laird is my hero.

it's gotten to be a little much

I’m not aiming this solely at you, but there is a general antipathy toward veteran players by commenters on LSB and over the top love for the new, young, shiny players.

by Randy Richardson on May 20, 2008 9:31 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes, it is.

But so is the constant Young defense.

by philkid3 on May 20, 2008 9:31 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

but, those of us defending him

are basically just saying he doesn’t suck, we’re not trying to make him out to be something he isn’t. Off the top of my head, I know Athos and I are probably the biggest Young supporters on LSB and we both agree he should be moved off SS as soon as there’s a better option.

by Randy Richardson on May 20, 2008 9:41 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

i gagree

i think Mike gets a bad rap, i am not saying hes Miguel Tejeda but he def. is a very good SS and will prob. be a very good 3B

by blueballlefty on May 20, 2008 9:43 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I love the guy (as I've been saying...)

And I agree that his range is more befitting of a 3B and should be taken advantage of when the time is right.

My three favorite numbers: 10, 32, 36. =)

by utlonghorn24 on May 20, 2008 9:44 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

That is not true.

You and I may merely be saying he doesn’t suck, but there are plenty out there that promote him as having been elite over his career which isn’t really justified.

More than that, there are people who get very pissy when someone poitns out a deficiency in Young’s game.

I’m not singling you out or even lumping you with either group, just saying there are unrealistic folks on either side.

by philkid3 on May 20, 2008 9:44 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Look at the post

in this thread alone. There are plenty of people that thinks he is beyond average. When you combine his bat and his glove, that’s what he is right now. Add in the fact that we’re stuck with the contract for the next 5 years, are you really shocked?

Yes, true.

But, as a rookie, Rusty put up a .410(!!!), and in his first full season he put up a .355.

Murphy will have to turn it up to merely be above average this year.

Which is not saying he hasn’t been a really nifty rookie, it’s just saying the Greer comparisson might be a bit much.
